this chapter was AMAZING.

loved the "day of common life" - what abhigya should have had so long back, and you've put it together beautifully. loved all the details - down to the name of suresh's cousin and masked abhi running with kids and the menu at the dhaaba!! ufff, just, EVERYTHING!!

and then the emotional content that it's all built around. just beautiful. you've only given us a handful of scenes and yet it's like there's a whole book's worth of development to show their growing friendship and the unspoken trace of romance beneath it.

abhi's moments were amazing today. i just loved this:

It was like he was re-born today and chashmish had guided him through it. He held her hand today more as a support than as an equal. He was new here, in this world.

Pragya looked into the mirror in her mind and Abhi looked back from it, they had merged into each other in a way that couldn't be explained - they were the same - She was Abhi - Abhi was she. They had the same identity.

what a perfectly poignant and poetic expression of his epiphany, and their connection. those lines are definitely going to stay with me for a long time!

and uff uff uff, suresh coming back and pragya being so far away from her own pain, because she's concerned with abhi. so exactly how she would be, and it makes so much sense at this point of the story. and abhi already being eaten alive by posessiveness!! ahh!! and i loved the texting - especially the bit about them both explaining their distance from their spouses. because they already belong to each other, but at least they're trying to be responsible and respecting the circumstances they're already caught in.

gorgeous amazing wonderful super brilliant chapter, aafrah! ok i shouldn't praise it too much, because then what will i have to say in appreciation of future chapters/stories? but ahhh. this was just such a bright spot in my day. loved reading it and thank you for not making us wait. thanks again for writing and sharing this story!! it's more meaningful than i can say, and it's been thrilling but also sincerely moving to read so far. just the best!! 😃 👏

This will sound so bizarre but I am in love with this story. It's so touching - two people connecting to each other through sorrow. That moment when he says Tanu isn't his wife? Beautiful. I could see Abhi, in my mind, feeling so small and sad but relieved to say it out loud. Pragya recognizing how they were the same in this important way. Sigh. Her focus on him, despite Suresh's return. Uff.


This story is so good, it doesn't even need a happy ending for me to feel satisfied after it's over (which is hopefully not soon). It's that good. 👏

CHAPTER 8

IF THIS MAKES YOU HAPPY

Pragya and Abhi both valued the promise they made to each other. Perhaps it was this that made both of them try one more time to work on their respective marriages. They both knew their partners weren't going to change, in fact this time it didn't even bother them, they weren't trying to fix their relationship for their partners. They were doing it to make each other happy. Indeed Suresh's return had reduced their interactions manifold, they couldn't meet each other anymore, but they still were in touch through text messages. They would ask each other how their attempts were working in shaping up their married lives and invariably both would lie and say it was going great and things were improving. Both lied to keep each other happy and in turn both felt a slight hollow somewhere. Pragya couldn't understand why, but when Abhi said that Tanu loved his midnight surprise date, a small part of her was trying very hard to absorb the idea that now Abhi would be less frequent in keeping in touch with her, she sighed, at least one of them found happiness. Similarly when Pragya told Abhi that Suresh had moved back to her bedroom, Abhi didn't know why but suddenly he found the food brought up to him by Robin, very stale. He shouted at the boy for such poor work and instantly felt bad for behaving that way. A perplexed Robin left wondering, how can food that was prepared fifteen minutes back taste stale to Abhi.

BULBUL, YOUR TIME IS UP NOW

Aliya hung up her phone, and smiled in satisfaction. No one will ever know about this. And never will the suspicion come on her this time.

It was around eight in the evening, Pragya had just finished preparing dinner. Suresh was sitting in the hall room, correcting some answer scripts when the phone rang.

Pragya - Hello!

Purab - Di, this is Purab here. (His voice was hoarse in tension and worry)Di, can you and Suresh bhai urgently come to City Hospital?

Pragya - Purab! What has happened? Why are you so tensed? Is BB okay?

Purab was close to crying now - No Di, she is not. I don't know how this happened, but BB was taking a sauna and I guess the door jammed somehow. When I found her, she was unconscious, di she is still unconscious, di please come fast"

Pragya was shell shocked. She couldn't move. Her BB? Unconscious? Sauna? Door jammed? What was happening, she wanted to probe further but realized Purab wasn't in a state to answer, she decided to reach there and find out. With tears streaming down her eyes and panic choking her from within she narrated the incident to Suresh. To her surprise, the first thing he said was "This time I won't let her get away with it". The he looked at Pragya and asked her to go to the hospital immediately, he would follow soon after. A perplexed Pragya found herself asking why he wouldn't come with her, but he didn't wait to explain. He just collected his scooter keys and was soon walking out of the apartment. Pragya didn't have time to give his actions any thought. She also collected her scooty keys and followed suit.

On arriving at the hospital Purab explained that BB had gone in for a sauna and somehow her door got jammed. In fact Purab had an important meeting that night and she wasn't expecting him until late night. But fortunately the meeting got cancelled and Purab had come home early to find steam jutting out of the sauna room. He quickly tried to open the door but it was jammed, he broke open the door to find his BB lying unconscious inside. He didn't even know for how long she was lying there unconscious. Pragya was horror struck, had it not been for sheer luck, she would have lost BB today. The thought numbed her from inside as she crashed on a seat nearby.

It had been an hour now, the doctors were still treating her as they impatiently waited outside. Suddenly Pragya looked up to see Suresh walking triumphantly towards them. He came up to them.

Suresh - You see Pragya, Purab? I was right! You both never listened to me! I told you Pragya, you will have to cry for this someday.

Purab - What do you mean Suresh bhai?

Suresh didn't reply, he produced his phone from his pocket and played an audio file in it. It was the voice of a girl talking, not just any girl - It was Aaliya.

Aaliya - Listen, don't just jam the door, she may just shut the sauna and wait. Make sure the off' button is not working and the regulator is jammed. Then jam the door. If she makes it through, I swear I will kill you. And after the job is done, collect your things and meet me. Take the money and then you shouldn't be seen in this city anymore. Now go do your job!

Purab stiffened instantly. Aaliya? Aaliya had done all this? Abhi's sister Aaliya? He knew she was hurt when he bowed out of the wedding, but hadn't he explained everything to Abhi? Didn't Abhi say Aaliya had understood, she will take time but get over it? Purab was stunned at Aaliya's atrocity. Pragya on the other hand couldn't believe her ears. One could kill for love? For unreciprocated love? Aaliya wanted to kill BB because Purab loved BB not her? But before she could dwell further, Suresh spoke.

Suresh - Listen both of you. Don't talk about this with anyone, you both know rockstar Abhi is a very influential figure, if he comes to know about this beforehand, out of blind love for his sister, he will want to tamper with it. I am going to the police station, we will reveal the proof to others only after Aaliya is arrested.

Pragya spoke without thinking, it came out spontaneously - Don't worry Abhi wouldn't do such a thing like tampering an evidence, he"

But Purab cut across her statement.

Purab - He will. That is exactly what he will do di. Suresh bhai is right. I know Abhi is not a bad human being, just that his rationality can be blinded when it came to Aaliya, such is his love for his younger sister.

Suresh looked at Pragya one more time and he left. Pragya and Purab restlessly waited for the doctor to come out.

CHOOSING BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU

"No" thought Abhi. This is not real. He was standing with the rest of his family members at the driveway of his house, as he watched the police van take his dear sister away in a handcuff. Before leaving with the police, Aaliya had looked at him and pleadingly asked one simple question, "You will take care of this right bhai?"

He stood there immobile. His daadi was howling in misery behind him. For once he didn't look back to support her. He knew tayaji and taiji would take care of her right now. He needed to free his Aaliya first. He immediately instructed Aakash and as he stood there, he heard Aakash calling the lawyer and explaining the situation and asking him to arrange for a bail. He was quiet. A lot of things were going through his mind.

That Suresh, he thought. He hated him anyway and now he had the audacity to walk into his house with police force to get Aaliya arrested? When he heard Suresh's voice from bedroom that evening he was surprised. What was he doing screaming here. He ran down. Suresh was there with the police and the police wanted to arrest Aaliya. He hurried in front and asked for a reason. Attempt to murder' came the swift reply from the police. Abhi couldn't believe his ears. Murder whom he thought, and Suresh replied to his thought aloud - Bulbul. Anger flared inside Abhi on hearing BB's name from Suresh's mouth. He was Pragya's husband not BB's. Then today why did he have to come here in place of Purab? And this is the man chashmish wants to work her marriage with thought Abhi savagely. And what did he say? Aaliya was trying to murder BB? Is he insane? This double batteried fellow? He was about to go ahead and break his face with a punch, but once again chashmish's drunken image came to his mind, "Help me Abhi, help me save my marriage". Abhi stopped short. He couldn't shake away Pragya's image from his mind. Defeated he turned to the police to negotiate. But the police wouldn't budge. They said they have proof. Abhi enquired what proof, but they refused to reveal. Abhi's thoughts were interrupted by a gentle tap on his shoulder, he turned to face Aakash.

Aakash - Bhai, the lawyer is coming, but he claims it is too late. Getting a bail tonight doesn't seem possible. We have to wait until morning. Or else we have to talk Suresh into taking his complaint back.

Abhi - Where is Purab?

Aakash - He is at City Hospital that is where BB is admitted.

Without further ado, Abhi drove down. On reaching the hospital, as Abhi walked down the corridor, his eyes fell on a tensed Purab, hunching on his seat, his aggression subsided slightly seeing his state. He knew Purab loved BB deeply, and how much the accident must have shaken him. He felt bad for BB too, she was like another sister for him, but that was there, the focus now was Aaliya, who needed rescuing. Then his eyes shifted to the gentle frame of a woman sitting on the opposite seat. She looked tired and devastated. She was sitting with her head tilted towards the wall, she was shaking slightly. Abhi forgot everything, he hurried towards her. Abhi knew how much Pragya loved her BB. He probably knew it more than anyone else, given that he knew that she was ready to take upon a lifelong compromise in a sad marriage just for her. But when he was about to reach her, he noticed another pair of hands bring a cup of tea for her. Abhi stopped. The hands carefully held her shoulder to support her sit up and then handed her the tea. An unknown anger filled Abhi as he looked up to see Suresh so close to his chashmish. So far, Abhi had managed to control his rage, but this was the last straw. He pounced on Suresh and grabbed him by the collar.

Abhi - You filthy sly piece of dirt ! What do you think you're doing?

Purab instantly placed himself between them and faced Abhi.

Purab - Please calm down bhai, please. I can't handle this right now. And bhai this time he isn't wrong. Aaliya indeed is guilty.

Abhi stared. Aaliya? Of course Aaliya, that was why he was here. As he tried replying his mind was pre occupied. He was here to save Aaliya, but when he was about to thrash Suresh, was that in Aaliya's context? Or was it because the foul liar was so close to chashmish? Abhi didn't want to dwell on this further right now. He pushed the thought aside. He was here for Aaliya.

Abhi - Listen Purab, I regret what has happened to BB. I am here with you. BB will be okay trust me. But keep Aaliya out of this Purab. You know her Purab, you know she is innocent right? Don't let this filthy miserable liar cloud your thoughts Purab and please take back your police complaint.

It was Pragya who came before him to talk this time on behalf of Purab.

Pragya - Abhi please try and understand, no one here has a rivalry against your sister. But she tried killing my BB, Abhi. How can we take back the complaint? What if she comes out and tries to attack BB again? It isn't safe Abhi. I know you are upset, she is you sister, but Suresh is not wrong this time.

Abhi looked at Pragya in disbelief! She was supporting Suresh by going against him? She believed Suresh and not him? Indeed their marriage was working well now, Abhi could see. He tried speaking, but words failed him.

Pragya standing there in front of everyone looked into Abhi's eyes. She saw that she had let him down. She wanted to track back on her words immediately, but she knew, Suresh indeed was right this time. She couldn't. As she looked into his eyes intently, she saw Abhi turn away from her, there was disappointment in his eyes. He turned around quietly, and left with a drooped shoulder. She heard Purab call behind him, begging him to understand. But Pragya knew he wouldn't. This was no more just about Aaliya anymore - it was about trust, faith and friendship.

Pragya couldn't stand there and simply let Abhi go away disappointed. She felt an unknown pain engulf her heart and only being close to Abhi could sooth her. Explaining to him, her truth would give her peace. So she started walking towards the hospital exit. Suresh called behind her, but she had no time to explain.

Pragya hurriedly came outside in the parking lot just in time to see Abhi start his car. Pragya called out to him, but he didn't respond. She saw she had no other option, so she went and stood before his car. Abhi looked at her, she had tears in her eye, Abhi couldn't bear to see them so he reluctantly came out of the car and came and stood before her.

Pragya - Abhi, Suresh is right this time.

Abhi - Of course, how can your' Suresh ever be wrong?

Pragya - My Suresh? Abhi what are you"

Abhi - I am talking sense chashmish, your Suresh. Your husband Suresh. The Suresh who recently moved into your bedroom, the Suresh who blames my sister for his' BB's state, that Suresh - your Suresh.

Pragya - Abhi I don't know where this came from, but all I wanted to say was Aaliya"

Abhi - To hell with Aaliya for a moment chashmish. If you told me you have proof that Aaliya has done such a heinous thing then for a moment I may consider the plausibility of the statement. I trust you. But that is not the point you wanted to put across back there outside the emergency unit.

Pragya - What do you mean Abhi?

Abhi - All you wanted to say was "your" Suresh was right chashmish, and Abhi? Abhi was wrong. How dare you chashmish? How dare you hurt me this bad? How dare you have the capacity to hurt me? Have you ever thought about me once in all this? BB is in a bad state I know, and maybe Aaliya has done what you claim, or maybe she hasn't. I don't know and honestly right now I don't care. All I want to know is how am I at fault here? How have I wronged you to deserve this? Why are you dying to prove it before me that you are on Suresh's side and against me? For you suddenly only your Suresh matters? What about your Ab---

And Abhi stopped. He didn't realize what he was saying. He was shocked to know his agitation and pain right now didn't have anything to do with Aaliya in the lock-up, it was because of Pragya. Why did he have tears in his eyes? Why was he hurt? Why did nothing matter more than Pragya's support right now? Why did he want Pragya to defend her again like she did before his clients that day? Why did Suresh have the right to hold her, give her tea, support her? Why couldn't he do those? Why couldn't he be the man who could so easily move to her bedroom? A hundred questions bombarded his mind.

Pragya just stared. Nothing was making sense to her, why was Abhi talking about these right now? Her Suresh? Was he about to say her Abhi? Why was he crying?... A sudden emotion struck her as she saw him in tears, she couldn't see tears in his eyes, not for her. Abhi didn't deserve this. She wanted to stop his pain, at any cost, but even at the cost of BB's safety? Asked a small voice from her head. She didn't want to hear that answer, she blocked the thought and looked intently into his eyes. The more she stared at him, the faster rationality was draining out of her. Finally she asked him to calm down, and she promised to take her complain back from the police provided he would ensure that Aaliya was kept far away from her sister. Without a second thought Abhi assured her that Aaliya would be taken to a rehab if needed but he will ensure BB's safety. Pragya felt relieved, she knew only Abhi could tackle Aaliya but to think he would believe her accusation on Aaliya even without looking at the evidence, just on her words? -She noticed he still had pain in his eyes and realized Aaliya's bail was not the only thing that was hurting him. She cupped his face with her palm and tried consoling him. She looked into his eyes for a long time quietly and he returned the look...all her worries had temporarily vanished into thin air. It was an emotion she never felt before. There was a burning feeling inside her as she dropped her gaze. He was still looking at her intently she asked him uncertainly if he really thought she didn't care for him, she was about to ask how could he think such a thing---but she couldn't complete her statement. She suddenly found a soft pair of lip was crushing on hers, and before she could react, she found herself reciprocating to it. It was not like she hadn't kissed before, but it felt like indeed she hadn't kissed before. They started off in a soft gentle way and soon it turned to be their need as they aggressively continued to kiss each other hungrily. The void that was there in both their hearts for so long, which they had learnt to live with, suddenly didn't seem to exist. They felt complete, they felt whole again.

As Pragya's conscious mind caught up with her, she abruptly broke free from him. She staggered and Abhi automatically held her elbow to help her balance. They stared at each other for a second lost in each other's eyes, before the horror of their action slowly begun to set in.
