Part 12
The Next Day - Monday
Zain and Ishaan were going to Mumbai that evening. But Seher had decided that she would still go to work, and come home a bit early, before they were due to leave. The guys were going to be in Mumbai all of Tuesday and they were returning that night. Then they were going to leave on Wednesday. Zain had said that his parents were due back in the weekend and then he would speak to them about their decision. It all seemed so real now. Seher felt like suddenly everything was moving so fast? "Well this is what you wanted Seher, so there is no point freaking out about it now?" Seher told herself. She had made her decision, and now she had to stick to it. It's not like this was some sort of arranged marriage to some unknown man? This was Zain? There was nothing to be intimidated about? She knew his parents and his Dad and her uncle Haider were business partners. Her cousin Ishaan was Zain's best friend. So she will be essentially with her own family over in Dubai. It won't be an issue at all. This situation could not get any more perfect? Then why didn't it feel perfect?
Was Sanam right? Was she doing this for all the wrong reasons? Well what else was she going to do? Go to Rehan and ask him how he feels about her? Tell him to break up with his girlfriend? She can't do that! It was clear from what she saw on the terrace when they were hugging that Rehan had decided that he prefers Sonia? That is why, after sharing a clear "moment" with HER, he had chosen to get close to Sonia? What more proof did she need that he was not thinking of rekindling any feelings for her? After all, they did have a history? So maybe, when their eyes met during that song, he was just giving into the moment? Maybe re-living old feelings? Old memories? That was all? Nothing more? After all, it's not like you can leave a relationship you were committed to, every time you felt attracted to someone else? But what if it was more than attraction? What if it was love? Also, Rehan and Sonia were not even engaged? So if he really felt something for her, wouldn't he have made a decision to end his relationship? But instead, from where she was standing, it looked like he was cementing it?
Seher didn't want to hang around at home and have breakfast with everyone. She needed to be alone. So she left home early without having breakfast and went to the city and grabbed a coffee and then went to work. She had not been to work in a few days, therfore she had a lot of pending work. She went to her desk and got stuck in. She had reached work before 8am, so hardly anyone was there. Around 8.45 she saw Rehan walk into the office. She just continued to look at her computer screen so she won't have to meet his eyes, when he walked past her desk. She picked up her desk phone and pretended to be on the phone. She saw Rehan approach her desk. She pretended to look at her computer screen and kept holding her phone to her ear. But just as he was about to pass her desk, she looked up for a second. Big mistake. His eyes were looking directly at her. There was a fire in his eyes, and Seher felt synched. There it was again, that look? Almost accusing? Yesterday at the main door when he was going to Haya's place, he had looked at her with the same accusing glare? What was he accusing her of? Moving on in life? The same thing HE had done? (But he didn't even know that she was engaged to Zain?) The look in those eyes unsettled her. Made her feel guilty? Like she had done something wrong?
The rest of the day went in a blur. Rehan had left the office around 2 hours after coming in. He had a council hearing to attend, and he had been gone most of the day, and Seher left the office around 4pm that day, coz she wanted to get home on time to drive to the airport with Zain and Ishaan. So she had not seen Rehan pretty much the whole day.
Seher had gone home and changed and hung out with the boys and then driven to the airport with them. Their flight was at 7pm, so they had had dinner at the food court inside the airport. Ishaan had been told the news of their engagement, and he had given them stick about it, but had promised to keep things quiet till Zain spoke to his parents. Hanging out with Zain and Ishaan was always easy. Not like being around Rehan, who always unsettled her. After having dinner with the boys and they went on to board their flight, Seher drove back home.
When she came home Sanam, Aahil and Rehan were having dinner. Lateef was also there, and Sanam had asked her to join them. She told them that she had eaten and excused herself. Usually, she would have hung out with them, even if she had eaten, but today Seher just could not make herself be around Rehan. Ever since she said yes to marry Zain, her emotions were totally in flux. Seher went to the kitchen and made herself a hot drink, it will probably help her sleep? She took her drink and quickly went to her room. She decided to have a shower, and work on a report she had not been able to finish today. After coming out of the shower, while still in her Bath robe, she sat on her bed with her laptop and started to work on her report. She didn't realise when she had fallen asleep?
Later that Night
Rehan had come to the hall to get a bottle of water from the kitchen. He had not been able to talk to Seher all day. She had successfully avoided him all day and now all evening as well. Thanks to that hearing he had to attend at the Council, he had to spend most of his day away from the office. He had been so distracted all weekend that he had totally forgotten it was on that day, until he got to the office that morning
When he got back to the office Seher had already left. Then she had gone to the airport with Zain and Ishaan and come back late. She had not even joined everyone for dinner saying she ate with Zain and Ishaan before their flight. It was around 10pm now and there was no way they could have that discussion now. Also, he didn't know if he could go to her room and talk to her? Either ways, Zain and Ishaan won't be back till later tomorrow, so he had most of tomorrow to try and corner her, and corner her he will. Maybe work was the best option? It will have to be, thought Rehan as he took his water from the fridge. As he was about to leave the kitchen, he heard a buzzing sound. It was coming from one of the kitchen bench tops. He stopped and went back to look and he saw a phone there.
He recognized that it was Seher's phone. He saw the missed call, and the phone screen stated "Zain". Rehan picked up the phone and looked at it for a moment. It looked like Seher had come to kitchen for something and left her phone here by mistake. She was always attached to her phone, so he was surprised she had forgotten it? Especially when she now had a newly acquired fiance who could call her at any time? It looked like there were 2 missed calls? He must have tried her twice now. He had to give her the phone. There was no option. Yes, she would probably end up talking to his "rival". But he could not just leave her phone in the kitchen like he never even saw it? With the phone in his hand, Rehan started to walk towards the hall and reached the staircase that led to the side of the house where Seher's room was.
Seher's Room
He walked to her door and knocked a few times. No sound. "Seher?" he said. No sound. As far as he knew she was at home? Maybe she was out of her room? Maybe in the bathroom? Either ways, he had to leave the phone in her room? So he knocked one more time and when there was no answer, he slowly opened the door. He quietly stepped into the room. As he walked further in and turned to his right, he saw that Seher was in the room. But she was laying on her bed fast asleep. Her laptop was lying next to her, and she was in her bathrobe. Her hair looked damp, as it lay against the yellow coloured pillow. Her favourite colour. She once told him that yellow reminds her of the son, of brightness, of happiness. She had always loved yellow, since she was a child, she had said. Daffodils were her favourite flower. He suddenly realised how many little things he had found out about Seher in those nearly 2 months she had lived in this house, before his Mother had been exposed. Each thing was etched in his mind. Never to be forgotten. Like her. How much he had tried to forget her? How futile his efforts had been? He moved further into the room and closer to the bed. He just watched her sleep. She looked so beautiful. He sighed.
He thought of just placing her phone on her side table and leaving. She looked so peacefully asleep that he didn't have the heart to wake her. He bent down towards the bedside table to place the phone. He was still looking at Seher, and didn't realise that his hand hit the candle in a glass case placed on her bedside table. Just as his hand made contact with it, it fell to the floor with a clang. "Damn" said Rehan, as he bent down and picked up the candle and placed it back on the nightstand.
Seher's eyes flew open at the sound. She blinked in confusion and then suddenly her eyes became wide as she saw who was standing next to her bed.
"Rehan?" she said, her voice full of surprise. "What are you doing here?"
"Seher...I..." Rehan started to say when Seher interrupted him. Seeing Rehan here, totally threw her. Especially when she had thought of nothing but him all day. Suddenly the intimacy of having him standing next to her bed, when she was only wearing a robe, was too much for her. Something in her snapped and she reacted more harshly than she normally would.
"How can you just barge into a girl's room like this uninvited and announced Rehan? Just because years ago...I let my guard down in front of you, and let you..."..Seher could not finish the sentence. She took a deep breath. "Just because of what happened then, don't think you can be familiar with me now?" said Seher angrily.
"Seher...you are getting this all wrong, I just came in to..."
"To what? What do you need to tell me at this time of night in my room, that you couldn't tell me outside? If you had any respect for me, then you won't just come in here like this, and when I am sleeping and not properly dressed! Maybe you think because you have already seen me undressed once, I don't deserve any privacy?"
"Seher...You are really crossing your limits now" said Rehan, his eyes flashing anger.
"Really Rehan? And you are not? You seem to forget that I am not your girlfriend? This is Seher. Not Sonia", said Seher sitting up in bed, and quickly adjusting the neckline of her robe.
Rehan looked in the other direction. Why was she overreacting like this? Rehan felt his temper rise as well. That comment about not being his girlfriend hit a raw nerve.
"I am well aware that you are not Sonia, Seher" said Rehan looking at Seher squarely, his voice cold.
"Yes...so if you know that, then what are you doing here at this time of night? If you're missing her...then why don't you Skype her? That way you can see her, and don't have to make do with me?" Said Seher, who felt her face flush at the comment that Rehan had made about him being "well aware" of the fact that she was not Sonia? That remark had hit below the belt. She had felt jealousy claw at her at his words. That made her even angrier.
Rehan was looking at Seher, not quite able to conceal the shocked pain in his eyes. He gave a small sarcastic smile.
"Wow...I knew you had a low opinion of me Seher...But I didn't know it was this low, that you took me to be the type of guy who just barges into a girl's room, because he thinks he can be 'familiar' with her? To think I thought you knew me? Well clearly you don't? If you think that because of what happened between us 3 years ago, that I don't respect you, then you don't know me at all?" said Rehan harshly.
"Why else would you just come here when I am asleep? You..." Seher started to say defensively. Now that her anger was a little cooled, she knew she had overstepped the mark. She could see the clear disappointment in Rehan's eyes when he looked at her.
"I didn't know you were asleep. I knocked a few times and didn't get a response? I thought maybe you were not in the room? When I came in, I saw you were asleep. I thought of waking you, but you looked so peaceful, I thought I would let you be. But the REASON I came in, was to give you this!" he said, extending her phone towards her. He dropped it on her bed in front of her.
"You left this in the kitchen. Your fiance was calling you!" he said in a cutting tone. Seher's head reared up at that statement. He knew that she and Zain...?
"Aahil Bhai and Sanam told me. They had the courtesy to let me know..." he couldn't resist making the dig..."Oh and FYI...Sonia is not my girlfriend anymore. We broke up?"
Seher started at Rehan, her eyes registering shock.
"What? Why?" she couldn't help exclaiming.
"Why? Let's just say that I was trying to be true to myself? You should try that sometime too", said Rehan looking at Seher with eyes full of hurt anger. He was in no mood to let her off the hook today. She had really overstepped the mark accusing him of "familiarity" with her because of their previous intimacy. As if he would take it for granted that he didn't have to give her privacy because of that? Did she know him at all? Or did her bias towards him because of who his Mother had been so strong, that she couldn't see him for who HE was anymore?
"I know I am the son of a murderer Seher? But that doesn't automatically make me a pervert?"
"Rehan..." Seher started to say, her tone was contrite, but Rehan cut her off.
"You know what? Save it Seher. You already showed me what you think of me? I only came further into the room, when I realised you were asleep was coz I was going to leave your phone on the bedside table. I would have just put in there and left, but the candle knocked over and you woke up! Of course...I know you probably don't believe me!"...Rehan said bitterly.
"Rehan...please...I shouldn't have said that...I..." Seher trailed off.
"Yes you shouldn't have! But I get it. You think someone like me can't be any better right? My Mother was a terrible women, and I am her son after all? What more do you expect from me? I know I did wrong not telling you about her before, but I was going to, and I never got the chance? NOT that I expect you to believe anything I say", said Rehan with an ironic smile.
Seher just looked at him, her eyes were stinging with tears and she didn't know what to say. The fact was, the lump in her throat was preventing her from saying anything.
"And to think that I thought...?" Rehan shook his head. "You know what the best part of this is? I was trying to get you alone all day today to tell you..." He stopped. "What's the use? You already made it clear how low your opinion of me is...so I doubt what I have to say would make ANY difference to you?"
Rehan turned around and started to walk towards the door. Then suddenly he stopped. Seher saw his hands fist up. Then he turned around.
"I was trying to get you alone all day, to say something to you, and now that I am here, I might as well say it? I know it means nothing to you, but I decided to be true to myself. So I can't go back on that decision now. Contrary to what you believe of me, I do keep my promises, and this promise I made to my sister. So I can't break it".
At that, Seher's eyes widened. What was he talking of? His sister, meaning Haya? She knew he went to her house for dinner last night. What promise was he talking of?
"You asked me why I broke up with Sonia? Well the reason is that I couldn't be true to myself or her, and continue my relationship with her. Because I still had feelings for someone else. Because I still had feelings for YOU Seher. The truth is that I never got over you." said Rehan, looking directly into her eyes. "That night after your dance with Zain, I knew I couldn't pretend to myself that I was not feeling what I was feeling. I broke up with Sonia that night. It was not fair to her to keep her in the dark. But the truth was, she had already figured it out", said Rehan with a small ironic laugh.
Seher just stared back at Rehan completely stunned. Rehan had broken up with Sonia that night? So what she had thought she saw on the Terrace? Was that a breakup? Were they just hugging each other to comfort each other? Not romancing as she had thought?
"3.5 years ago, I found out at the same time as you, that my Mother was a killer. Her truth robbed me of my identity completely. I always felt like keeping the secret of who she was to me, was a burden I could barely carry. I always felt like I was living a lie. Because I WAS. But I felt like I owed it to her, to keep her confidence. I tried to justify her greed for money thinking it was because she was left to fend for herself with a child. She always made me believe that she was the victim. To some degree I believed her and maybe I WANTED to believe her? Because the alternative meant that my Mother was someone with no conscience, and that was just not palatable to me". Rehan stopped and sighed. He closed his eyes and opened them again, his hands fisting up again.
Seher swallowed and just kept looking at him. Shock robbing her of the ability to speak.
"I know you regret what happened between us 3.5 years ago. But no matter what, I can never regret it. Because I loved you Seher. I loved you! I still do. I tried to stop. I tried to tell myself it didn't matter anymore. But no matter how much I tried, it never worked. Seeing you again...it opened it all up. Everything I buried. It all came back again! I didn't tell you all this to burden you with my feelings. I know what you have chosen for your life and your future. But I couldn't just walk out of here, and not let you know. Because, they say "the truth sets you free" and I wanted to know what it felt like to be free again? That was the only good thing that came out of Ammi's truth coming out. I didn't have to PRETEND not to be her son anymore? Horrible as it was. At least, I knew the truth. I thought it was time you knew mine!"
Rehan saw Seher looking at him in stunned silence. She didn't seem to be reacting at all? What had he expected? That she would rush into his arms and tell him that she felt the same? That she loved him too? Since when had he started to believe in fairy tales? Hadn't his own life taught him anything? There was no such thing as a Fairy tale ending? Rehan turned to leave and then turned back one last time. He looked directly at Seher. His eyes meeting hers squarely. He had nothing to hide.
"Tume tumhari nayi zindagi Mubarak ho Seher!"
With that he stalked out of her room. Seher watched him leave and she didn't even realise that tears were falling down her eyes. She clamped her hand over her mouth. She sat there for a few minutes just staring at the now closed door. She then took the hand covering her mouth away and started to sob. She didn't know how long she sat there sobbing. "Rehan LOVED her! He loved her! He had broken up with Sonia for her?But she had thought?..." fresh sobs racked her frame as she thought of all the horrible things she had said to him. How hurt must he have been?
Aahil had been right. She had never tried to understand how complicated the situation with his Mother was. How hard it must have been for HIM? She had only ever seen her own pain, and her own guilt for loving him. She had punished him, because she had fallen in love with him, and he turned out to be Tanveer's son. Something he could do nothing about. Yes, she had been right to be angry that he had concealed the truth of his parentage from her, and from Aahil and Sanam as well. But it was not that simple? She saw that now. She had never really thought of it from HIS point of view?
Part of her wanted to just get up off this bed and run behind him. Turn him around, and throw herself into his arms, and tell him. "I love you too Rehan. I love you too!" but she couldn't do it. She was not free. She had promised someone else she would be his life partner, and she could not go back on that promise. She herself had set this trap for herself. Now she herself will have to come out of it. But she couldn't tell Rehan how she felt about him till she spoke to Zain. What was she going to say to him? She didn't know. She had not wanted to dwell on the fact that she was being unfair to Zain, as much as to herself, agreeing to this marriage? She had KNOWN that she didn't love Zain. Yes she loved him, but not the way a girl should love the guy she was going to marry? But once again, her pain when she thought Rehan didn't want to acknowledge having feelings for her, had been paramount in her mind. In pain, she had reacted, and not thought of the consequences. She really needed to curb her impulsive nature. It was causing destruction in her life and the life of others. She owned Zain an apology. He was her best friend, and understood her really well. He will understand. She knew that.
But more than anything, she owed Rehan an apology. How she had spoken to him had been unforgivable. Even as she said those words, she knew they were not true! Rehan could NEVER take advantage of her. That day at the club, when she had practically invited him to kiss her, HE had resisted. She had been inebriated and he had known she was being emotional and not in her senses. From what she found out now, he must have been well aware he still had feelings for her even then? If he wished, he could have taken advantage of the situation quite easily. But he didn't. He was THAT sort of guy. She had just reacted emotionally and irrationally when she had seen him in her room. She had felt completely lost and exposed. Vulnerable. She had not known how to handle her emotions. So she had blamed him for coming to her room, and accused him of being familiar with her because of their previous intimacy, and told him he didn't respect her? How must he have felt? Seher felt terrible and she started to cry again. HOW could she say such a thing?
First thing in the morning, she had to find Rehan and apologise to him. Then when Zain came back, it was time they had a serious discussion about their decision and their future. After all, she couldn't pretend that what Rehan had said made no difference to her, because it did? How can she marry Zain when she still had feelings for Rehan? It would be totally unfair to Zain. The truth was she still loved Rehan? But she had not wanted to acknowledge it? The only time she had wanted to, was that night after the dance. Then she had gone to the terrace and misunderstood the scene between Rehan and Sonia, and jumped headlong into a hasty decision. Her heartbreak had compelled her towards destruction. Well it was time to put things right. To make the right decision. Rehan had said that he was trying to be "True to himself?". Well it was time she did the same!
To be continued...
Hope you guys liked this one. The next part is when Seher will confront her feelings and Rehan.
