Part 13

The Next Morning - Tuesday - Ibrahim Mansion

Seher had spent a fitful night. She had barely got any sleep. She kept waking up thinking of what Rehan had told her, and what she had told him right before. Her guilt made it hard for her to control her emotions. She found herself in tears several times during the night. She so baldy just wanted to run to Rehan and tell him how she felt about him, but she couldn't. She knew she had made a commitment to Zain, and that meant she had to keep up her end of it. She remembered how Badi Ammi and even her Uncle Ayaan had told her how commitment was paramount to her Mother Zoya. Especially when it came to marriage, her Mother had always had very strong views. That is one of the reasons that Seher knew she could not marry Zain now.

Now that she knew that her feelings for Rehan were reciprocated, she knew if she went ahead with this marriage to Zain, she will always feel like she cheated herself and him. It was different if she and Rehan could never be? If he had in fact chosen someone else over her? If he was over her? Then Zain would have been her second chance at some happiness in her life? Maybe not the same happiness she would have had with Rehan, but she would have been happy with him in a different way? But now she knew that Rehan only wanted her, and the truth was, she only wanted him. It was only right that she let Zain find a girl who only wants to be with him? No doubts in her mind? By being honest with him, it may hurt him now, but she was giving him the chance to meet someone who will love him the way he deserves to be loved!

Breakfast Table

Seher had a shower and went down to breakfast. She was dressed for work. She came down to find Aahil and Sanam at the table, but no Rehan.

"Where's Rehan?" she involuntarily asked, and Aahil and Sanam looked at each other as if to say "What brought this on?" Usually Seher avoided Rehan. Especially since she had announced she had agreed to marry Zain, she had barley been seen anywhere where she could run into Rehan? Now she herself was asking where he is.

"He left early. He had a meeting he said", said Sanam, looking carefully at Seher.

"Oh Ok" said Seher. She sat down at the table, and Sanam noticed that her eyes looked very puffy.

"Seher...have you been crying?" she asked with concern. Aahil also looked at her more closely at Sanam's comment. "Is everything OK Sali Sahiba?" Aahil asked.

"Yeah...yeah Jeej. It's all fine" lied Seher. The truth was, nothing was fine. But, she couldn't tell anything to her sister and brother in law, until she sorted out the mess that she herself had made. She had to apologize to Rehan, speak to and apologize to Zain, and then speak to Rehan again about how she felt about him? So many things she had to do before she could tell Api and Jeej what was going on? She was not someone who was good at keeping things in usually. She was bursting to tell her sister what happened, but she didn't even know where to start? So she quickly grabbed a toast and drank some coffee and told them she had to go.

"I'm leaving in about half an hour Seher. I can give you a ride?" said Aahil.

"No Jeej. Thanks. I have to go now. I have this report I need to finish, and a lot of other stuff to do, and I..." Seher was going a mile a minute.

"Ok.Ok. It's fine. I guess I will see you at work then?" said Aahil, his eyebrows raised.

"Yeah. Gotta go. Bye. Bye Api" she said looking back at Sanam for a moment.

"Bye" said Sanam, her eyes thoughtful.

"Something happened last night. I don't know what? But Seher seems...different?" said Sanam to Aahil once Seher had left the area.

"Yeah, kind of. But these days she has been up and down a lot?" said Aahil looking at Sanam pointedly.

"Yes, but you must have noticed she is acting sort of strange? She asked where Rehan was? What was that about?"

"Maybe just trying to make sure she won't run into him? You know how things are between them at the moment?"

"Yeah...but this was more than that?"

"Is this the Twin Telepathy thing again?" said Aahil with a smile.

"Something like that" said Sanam smiling back at him.

"Don't stress baby. It will be OK"

"I sure hope so Aahil" said Sanam with a sigh.

Office of Ibrahim Holdings - Late Morning

Seher had been looking for an opportunity to talk to Rehan from the time she got to the office. Soon after she arrived, she found out that Rehan was in a meeting with some out of town clients. This went on for more than an hour. Then he was having a Teleconference. She checked her schedule and there were no meetings with Rehan and their Alpha Project team today. They were all doing their own parts and they didn't have a meeting till later that week. So she didn't even have the excuse of a meeting to try to talk to him. Not that she got much time alone with him with that Bimbette of his Shalini? Seher gave an ironic little smile. She remembered how much Shalini had irked her when she first started working here? She realised now, that the way Shalini was always clinging to his side got to her more, because she was jealous? She didn't want anyone to get too close to Rehan? Even though she didn't admit it, she had been jealous of Shalini and Sonia as well. Because in her mind, she had always been possessive of Rehan. She had always thought he belonged to her? "That's because he does" she told herself with a smile. "He is mine! Soon that Shalini will know it too" thought Seher with a twist of her lips!

She saw Rehan come out of a meeting room with a few people, and then saw him disappear to another side of the office. Seher got a call, and she had to busy herself with that. But from the corner of her eye, she saw Rehan walk back towards the side of the office where his cabin was. "Good" thought Seher. He will be free soon and she will be able to have a chat with him. She didn't feel like she could function anymore. She was so full of guilt. If she didn't apologize to him now, she was not going to be able to function for the rest of the day. Remembering what she had said to him made her feel terrible. Seher was getting up from her desk just as her call ended, when someone came to her desk to ask her a question regarding the Alpha project. It was one of the Marketing people, so she didn't want to blow them off. After a 10 minute discussion, she managed to get away from her desk.

Seher walked over to Rehan's cabin, and knocked on the door.

"Come in" said Rehan's voice.

Seher walked in. Rehan looked up from his desk and saw that it was Seher. His expression changed. His face became shuttered. Seeing this, Seher realised that he was still very angry with her. "This is not going to be easy", thought Seher. But she had to do this, because after what she said to him last night, there was no way she could not apologise.

"Can I help you Miss Khan?"

"Rehan...I mean Sir...I..."

"Yes...?" Said Rehan, his browse raising.

"I just came here to say...I...I'm..." Seher started to falter, as she was trying to find the right words to express her regret.

"I thought we said everything we had to say last night Seher? You made your opinion of me abundantly clear. What more is left to say?"

"Rehan...PLEASE...at least hear me out...I am trying to apologise here...I...I'm sorry!"

"OK!" said Rehan.

"Ok?" Seher said perplexed.

"OK, you apologised? Thanks!"

"Rehan...Please can you at least...?..."Seher was saying, but suddenly a knock on the door stopped her from completing her sentence.

"Yes?" said Rehan, when the door opened and Shalini stepped in. As she stepped inside, she saw Seher, and her expression became cool. "Rehan sir...should I come back later?" she asked pointedly, looking at Seher.

"No Shalini. You can stay. Miss Khan and I are done!".

"But Rehan...?" Seher started to say, when Rehan got up from his desk. He turned towards Shalini and gestured to her to sit down on one of the seats in front of his desk. Shalini walked further in, and took a seat. Seher was still standing towards the side of Rehan's desk, behind the seats. He then walked around his table to where Seher was standing. He gestured to her to walk in front of him. When they reached the door of his cabin, he opened it, and indicated that she leave.

"Rehan...what? Listen to me...I...?" Seher started to say, but Rehan didn't let her finish.

"Seher"... said Rehan under his breath "We are at work, not home! Please don't create a scene here. YOU may be moving to Dubai very soon, but I still have to work with these people? So it's important to me that they respect me, and that won't last long, if I conduct my private conversations here at work?" said Rehan, his voice full of censure.

"Oh... and your little Bimbo is here just to have a strictly "professional" conversation I guess?" said Seher, who felt her heckles rise at his tone, and what he just said. For a moment she forgot why she was here.

"If you're implying that I have some sort of inappropriate relationship with Shalini...then...?" said Rehan his voice low and angry.

Seher took a deep breath. Here she had come to apologise to Rehan and instead she had accused him of something else? At least that is what he thought? "Of course NOT...Rehan..."

"This conversation is over Seher" said Rehan with a finality in his voice.

"Fine!" said Seher her eyes flashing anger. She turned and stepped out of his cabin, and the door closed behind her with a resounding click. Seher stood outside his door with clenched fists, and took a few breaths to calm herself. "Wow...that went just great Seher. Now you've really done it!" she told herself as she turned around and marched off to the office floor and in the direction of her desk. Seher had no option but to carry on with work. She knew that Zain was going to be back in a few hours. This conversation with Rehan was a disaster, but hopefully her conversation with Zain won't be? She was just not having a good day.

After showing Seher the door, Rehan turned around and stood by the door and took a breath to calm himself. He knew he had been very harsh with her. But he didn't know what else to do to guard his already vulnerable heart. He had totally let his guard down in front of her yesterday. He had told her how he felt, and she had just stared at him and said nothing? Worse still, she had previously accused him of taking liberties with her due to their shared history. After all that, he didn't know if he could risk relenting in front of her? Acting the way he had, and showing anger was the only way he knew how not to show her any weakness. He had his pride, and he knew that he could not lose any more of it in front of Seher Ahemed Khan. He had to be strong. She will probably move to Dubai soon, to marry Zain? Most likely her wedding will be there, coz all her family from London, and Dubai could easily travel there, and the only ones who had to go from here were Sanam, Aahil, Haya and Badi Ammi? Sanam could technically still travel, coz her pregnancy was not so advanced that she will be banned from flying. Also, Dubai was a short flight. So most likely the wedding will be there?

Rehan shook his head. He had to stop thinking of Seher and her wedding. It was too depressing. He had done all he can. He had kept his promise to Haya. He had told Seher how he felt, and he had put himself out there. Now it was up to her, and her behavior last night had shown him just what she thought? But it seems she regretted what she said to him, coz she had come to apologize to him? Yes. She had seemed like she was sorry? But then, she had gone and accused him again? Implying that Shalini was not in his cabin just for professional reasons? Despite himself, Rehan felt his lips twist, when he remembered the way Seher's eyes had flashed before she called Shalini his Bimbo? She had almost sounded jealous? He shouldn't read too much into her outburst! He shook his head again, and made his way inside the office to talk to Shalini. One thing is for sure, wherever Seher was, there was not a bored moment? He didn't want to admit how much he was going to miss her when she left again? It was bad enough the first time? Rehan closed his eyes. The next few weeks will be very tough for sure. He will have to continue to maintain the facade he had put up in front of Seher today. That was the only way he could get through all this with his dignity in tact!

Later that Evening - Ibrahim Mansion

Seher had had a lousy day at work, what with her fight with Rehan. But she was determined that she will speak to him again either tonight or maybe tomorrow sometime? But now the imperative thing was to talk to Zain. Explain to Zain where she stood? She was not breaking up with him necessarily coz she thought she had a chance with Rehan. After this afternoon she was not sure if he was ever going to forgive her, and she couldn't hold it against him if he didn't. But surely he will? She didn't have time to contemplate this right now. Ishaan and Zain had arrived 2 hours ago. They had had dinner and now they were all sitting in the informal sitting area near the pool.

Rehan was nowhere to be seen. He had not even been in for dinner? Aahil said that Rehan was having dinner with some work people. So he won't be in. Aahil and Sanam both suspected that this sudden catch up with work colleagues was courtesy of his need to avoid Seher. When Seher heard Rehan was out, she too knew he was avoiding her. She didn't blame him. But all that had to wait, coz it was her turn to talk to Zain now. She needed to get Zain away from everyone. So she sent him a text.

"Can you meet me in the garden in 10 minutes?" the message said. Zain saw the message and looked up at Seher speculatively.

"What's up Golden girl? Something you can't say in front of everyone?" he sent her a message back.

"Please Zain, just meet me outside? I need to discuss something with you?"

"Sure Babe. Looks like you missed me?" he messaged back, and looking at her, gave her a smile. Seher looked at him for a second and looked away. "Oh No. He probably thinks I missed him, and want to see him alone?" This was going to be harder than she thought?

Sanam, Aahil, Ishaan and Latiff were all watching some show, and seemed quite preoccupied. Seher quickly made her way out to the garden, and a few minutes later Zain followed. If anyone noticed that they both disappeared from the sitting room around the same time, no one said anything.

Seher was waiting outside in the garden next to the lawn chairs. The same place Sanam had told her the day before that she was marrying Zain, while in love with someone else. She had been right! Suddenly she felt a pair of arms go around her.

"Hey" said Zain.

"Zain?" said Seher, swallowing.

"Who else? Did you forget you texted me and asked me to meet you out here?" he asked with a laugh. Seher took hold of Zain's arms and moved them off her, and stepped forward and away from him. She turned around to face him. Zain was looking at her quizzically.

"What's wrong Seher?" seeing the expression on her face, he knew something was not right.

"Zain...What I'm going to tell you is VERY hard for me to say, but I HAVE to say it! I don't blame you if you hate me after this?" said Seher closing her eyes and then opening them again.

"Nothing you say can make me hate you Seher" said Zain in a serious tone.

"You shouldn't say that, when you don't know what I'm going to say Zain?"

"Whatever it is, I can't imagine hating you?"

"Well you will be well within your right to! Because I have not been fair to you! I...The truth is Zainey...I can't marry you!"

"What?" said Zain, shock in his voice. "WHY?"

"Because...I don't...I don't love you the way I should love the man I am about to marry!"

"Seher...I always knew you were not "in love" with me, in the conventional sense? I mean, we chose each other because we wanted the best match for ourselves? Not coz we are trying to live up to some romantic ideal? I love you Seher! I do. But it's not like I am this crazy obsessed lover or something? You know the Deewana type?" said Zain with a small laugh.

"What if I was that type?"

"Sorry?"

"Yes. I AM! I'm sorry. You may not be the Deewana type, but I am! I know what it's like to love like that. Once you know it, you can't UN-know it! It spoils you for anything else, or anyone else! I am not saying you can NEVER feel that feeling twice? Actually you can! But in MY case, both times it was for the same person!" Seher said, looking at Zain, her eyes full of regret.

"REHAN?" said Zain looking directly into Seher's eyes.

"How did you...?" Said Seher, her eyes reflecting shock.

Zain shook his head and smiled. "I am not BLIND Seh! I could always see there was something there! I always sensed a undercurrent there. Some unspoken energy between the two of you? But I thought maybe it was because you fell out with him over his Mother? You know the fact that his Mother killed your parents? That would make anyone feel awkward?" Zain gave an ironic laugh. "I always told myself that that was what I was seeing? But that on Bhojpur Hill, I thought maybe it was something more? But I dismissed it. But after we decided to get married, I noticed that Rehan was practically nowhere to be seen? Tonight for example? I take it the feeling is mutual?"

"Yes!" Seher said, her eyes filled with tears. "Zain...please I don't want you to think that I was USING you! I love you! I really do! We have been friends for years, and I thought it was enough, I thought I could move on, you know, live a new life with you? If I HAD committed myself to you, I would have stayed by your side for life! THAT is why I can't do it! I don't want you to have anyone by your side that is less than what YOU deserve! If we had married, that is what would have happened. Because my heart always belonged to someone else. I just didn't want to accept it. I became a coward. I should have fought for him, when I thought he was choosing someone else? But instead I chickened out, and thought I would just run away with you! I am SO sorry!" at this point, the tears were running down her eyes.

"Seher...I AM upset! I won't pretend I'm not. But not necessarily coz you are calling off our engagement, but coz you didn't trust me enough to tell me the truth? To confide in me about Rehan?" Zain actually looked hurt.

"Zainey...I never even told Sanam about Rehan! I never talked to anyone about it. It was that painful for me that I just wanted to forget that I was ever in love with him? That I had ever dreamt of a future with him? When I found out who his Mother was, and what she did...I felt like I was a traitor to my parents? I also felt so let down that HE didn't tell me who he was? I felt betrayed! I thought I was over it, but seeing him again, I realised I was not! Seeing him again, just made it all new again! Made it all raw again!"

Seher took a deep breath. "I wanted to forget him. That is why I didn't come back to India in 3 and a half years. I was running. But I finally stopped running, and decided to confront things. I wanted to be close to Sanam, coz she couldn't do all those long flights anymore, and I was not going to let Rehan stop me. So I came back. But from the moment I came back, I was running from my feelings for him. I ran so hard that I finally ran into you, and I can only apologise to you for involving you in my mess!"

"Hey...I was always part of this mess! We have been a team for years! You, me and Ishaan, and we always will be! So what if I didn't become your life partner? I am still your partner in crime Golden Girl, and no matter who your husband is, he better not get in the way!" said Zain giving a small smile. But Seher could see the hurt in his eyes.

"Zain! I know your hurt, and it's ok to be hurt! You don't always have to be Cool!"

"It's ALL part of the image baby!" said Zain with a little wink. Seher walked over to him and hugged him. Zain hugged her back, and they held each other tight for a long moment.

"I am sorry Zainey...I really am! I never meant to hurt you. You HAVE to believe me!"

"I DO, you crazy girl! I do! I know you don't have a malicious bone in your body, and that is why we have been such great friends all this time, and that is why I wanted to marry you Seher!" said Zain, holding her away from him and looking at her, his eyes serious.

"Promise me, we will always be friends?" said Seher looking up at him earnestly.

"We will! No one can stop us! Not even that Deewana of yours!" said Zain mock threateningly.

"To be honest Zain...I don't even know if he and I are ever going to happen? I don't want you to think that I called off our engagement, coz I am getting back together with him? I did it coz it was the right thing to do! You won't believe how awful I was to him? I said some really hurtful things to him...I don't think he even wants to talk to me?" said Seher, her voice tearful.

"He will Seher. Whatever you said...if he really loves you, I am sure he will forgive you!"

"I'm not so sure about it?" said Seher morosely.

"I am! Anyway, he is a fool if he won't forgive you! I know you have an acid tongue sometimes...but I also know when you say sorry, you mean it sincerely? If HE doesn't know that, then he is not the man for you Seher!"

"Trust me Zain...After the way I acted, he is well within his rights to hold it against me! But one thing I learned from all this, is to never run! But always confront my feelings. No matter how hard it is! So I will try again with him!"

"If it's worth fighting for, then of course you must!"

"It is!" said Seher said with a sigh. "It's been a long day. But you should get some rest Zainey. You and Ishaan have a flight tomorrow?"

"Will you come to the airport with us?"

"Try and stop me! I finished all my pending work today, so I don't have to go in tomorrow. Tomorrow, I will spend the whole day with you and Ishaan!"

"Don't stop coming to Dubai?"

"As IF? Try keeping me away? Either ways, I will always be coming to Dubai and going to London. We are family Zain, and I didn't have a family for SO long in my life. I know how much it's worth!" said Seher with a smile.

"That's my Golden Girl" said Zain with a smile. They smiled at each other and hugged again. "THIS conversation had gone a lot better than the talk with Rehan" thought Seher. But she had to talk to him again tomorrow. After Zain and Ishaan left. With that resolve in her mind, Seher walked into the house with Zain. He will always be her friend. They will always be special to each other. But she knew that trying to turn into something else was a mistake. You cant give someone else another person's place in your life! The place she had tried to give Zain in her life already belonged to someone else. It belonged to Rehan, and she will make Rehan see that she had not meant those things she said. That for her, he was the one, and always will be!
