Later That day - Ibrahim Mansion
The cousins went back to London and Dubai that night, and Zain, Seher and Ishaan went to drop them off to the airport. Rehan had gone straight to work after dropping Sonia off at the airport that afternoon. He came back home early evening, in time to say goodbye to Seher and Sanam's cousins. He didn't see Seher. Maybe she was in her room? That was odd? He would have thought she would spend every moment with her cousins before they left? They had told him that he should visit London, or Dubai? Rehan had not been to London, but he had been to Dubai twice. However, he had not been there since the discovery of Seher and Sanam's extended family there, "The Sheik's". Seher had started to visit them from London and Aahil and Sanam had gone over there to meet Seher as well. He had avoided going anywhere where he knew he would either run into anyone connected to the Ahemed Khan's or to Seher herself. So there was no way he had wanted to risk going to Dubai. Especially coz in the past 3.5 years, he had NEVER asked Sanam or Aahil about Seher. Not once. They had never offered any information either, or discussed her with him. They knew Seher had issues with him. But nonetheless he had found out things about her. Especially from Haya. He knew Seher came to Dubai often, so he had avoided going there at all costs.
How many years he had spent avoiding her? Running from his feelings? But it was time to stop. It was time to be true to himself. He couldn't run anymore. Since he found out what his Mother had done and her connection to Seher's family, he had felt immense guilt. He had taken on the guilt that was his Mother's. He felt like it was his legacy to carry the burden of her sins. Maybe that was his punishment for being her son? He had forced himself to accept what he thought he deserved for being the son of a murderer. But last night something had snapped in him. He had finally been unable to bear it anymore. He had not been able to bear the burden of the pretence. Pretending his heart was not breaking. Pretending that he didn't love her anymore. Pretending he was able to watch her with another man and tell himself he can live with it. Because the truth was he could not! Enough. He had to tell her how he felt. Because there was no way he could fight this feeling anymore. Hide from it anymore. Whatever she said in return, it almost didn't matter anymore. Because at least he knew he was being true to himself. His Mother had made his whole life a lie. By pretending that he no longer cared, HE was living a lie too. He could no longer do that! It was time to stop existing and start living again.
He knew that Zain and Ishaan were not leaving that night. They had a meeting in Mumbai next week, he had heard them talk of it. So they were leaving sometime next week after attending the meeting. From what he understood the meeting was on Tuesday. He had heard Ishaan say that they will go to Mumbai on Monday evening, coz the meeting was really early and they had some prep to do. Maybe their absence will give him a good chance to talk to Seher? After everyone had left, Rehan had lingered in the hall watching the early news. Aahil and Sanam also came into the informal sitting room and joined Rehan.
Sanam was still very preoccupied thinking of the announcement of Seher and Zain. She knew that Seher was trying to move on, and that was all very well, but she still thought she shouldn't do it without at least talking to Rehan once? At least that way she knew she had given it a chance? At least she didn't have to regret anything in the future? Regret was the worst thing. She may not feel it now, but Sanam didn't want Seher to go further in life, and question the decision she made to spend her life with Zain. He was a great guy, and under any other circumstances, she would be very happy with her sister's choice. But she didn't want Seher to ever have doubts about her decision. The only way to do that was to close the door on the Rehan chapter for good. But how can she do that when there is no closure? Deciding to marry someone else, when she clearly still had feelings for Rehan was not closure? It was escapism and Sanam didn't believe in that! Her usually brave sister was being a coward? But why? After that dance, she thought Seher would at least confront her feelings even once. But she had done the opposite. Something told Sanam that she had felt compelled to make this decision. But what had propelled her towards it so suddenly? She knew the defensive mood that Seher was in, she was not going to be forthcoming about it. Sanam sighed.
Rehan and Aahil were watching the news and Sanam was sitting there lost in her thoughts.
"Rehan, I think one of us will have to go to Mumbai in the next two weeks to meet the project manager from "Tyagi & Son" about the Bayside Mall project? Rohan Tyagi called me last week and said he would like one of us to come over and meet him and the project manager, Avinash Kirloskar I think? Isn't Sonia involved in the promotions of that Mall project?"
"Yes Aahil Bhai, she is".
"Nice girl. Smart and level headed. I like her Rehan. I mean, I know I've met her before, but I really saw her in close quarters this time".
"Yeah Sonia is a special girl", agreed Rehan.
"I guess you will want to go to Mumbai to meet up with the Tyagi people? After all, it will give you a chance to catch up with Sonia? But hey, if she wants to come visit here, she can anytime? Right Sanam?" said Aahil looking in Sanam's direction.
"Yes Rehan. Please tell Sonia that she is most welcome to come stay with us anytime?" Sanam interjected.
"Thank you Sanam, Aahil bhai. But I don't think she will be visiting here anytime in the near future".
"Why is that?" asked Sanam.
"Well...Actually...we broke up!" said Rehan quietly.
"What? Why?" asked Aahil.
"Let's just say...I realised it was time to be true to myself Aahil bhai" Said Rehan, looking squarely at Aahil. At this statement, Aahil gave a quick glance to Sanam? They exchanged a "What on earth happened here?" look.
Sanam was looking at Aahil. She realised what this meant. Rehan had said that he wanted to "Be true to himself". That could only mean one thing. He had accepted his feelings for Seher. Sanam was asking Aahil a question with her eyes. She knew that considering what Rehan just said, it was only right they inform him of what Seher said to them. Aahil gestured with his eyes that "Yes. We have to tell him!".
"Rehan..." Said Aahil carefully. "There is something you should know!"
"Yes Aahil bhai?"
"It's about Seher. Well specifically about Seher and Zain".
"I think I already know they are dating Aahil bhai".
"No that's not it Rehan". Aahil took a deep breath. This was not easy. He could tell that Rehan had broken up with Sonia because of Seher. Or more specifically because of the feelings he still had for her. It was not just Sanam that had noticed the obvious fire between Seher and Rehan during that dance. The dance was between Seher and Zain, but the emotions had been shared between her and Rehan!
"Rehan...Seher and Zain have announced their engagement. I mean, they have decided to get married" said Aahil looking at Rehan. He saw the way Rehan's eyes registered total shock. Aahil closed his eyes.
"WHAT?" said Rehan his face a study of shocked disbelief?
"I'm sorry Rehan. I know you...I mean... I'm sorry" said Sanam as she stood up from the armchair she was sitting on. "Please excuse me" she said as she left from there. She had seen the utter disbelief in Rehan's eyes turn into shocked pain. She had felt like she couldn't face him. Her sister had made a choice, and she knew that choice broke Rehan's heart. Sanam just didn't feel like watching the devastation on his face anymore.
Aahil watched Sanam leave the sitting area and sighed. "I'm sorry too Rehan. This came as much of a shock to us, as it did to you. I don't know what came over Seher? She told us this morning that she and Zain had decided to get married. It was totally out of the blue!" said Aahil running his hand through his hair. "Sanam is really upset, coz she doesn't know how to react to this news? We don't know what's got into Seher all of a sudden?"
"I know!" said Rehan. "I got the message loud and clear" he said as he turned on his heel and left the sitting room too.
Aahil opened his mouth to call him back, but decided against it. After this news, Rehan would want to be alone, and it was wise to let him reflect on his own! What could he say that would make him feel better? He just broke up with his girlfriend because he was ready to accept his feelings for Seher, and he finds out that she has announced her engagement to another man! He knew that something had compelled Seher to make this decision so suddenly. Was it that she was trying to hide from her feelings for Rehan, so chose to move things forward with Zain? But she has been in denial of her feelings for weeks? What exactly happened that made her make this decision last night? Was it the dance? Had that moment been too real for Seher to ignore, and this was her way of pretending it didn't happen? Either ways, Aahil knew why Sanam was so upset. After all, how can she be happy when she knows Seher has made this decision for the wrong reasons? Zain was a great guy. This was not about him. This was about Seher. No matter how great Zain was, it didn't mean that the decision Seher made was the right one. Even he was not happy. Because both Seher and Rehan were clearly miserable! He had seen through her facade this morning. Who was she fooling?
"What a Mess!" Aahil muttered under his breath as he got up from his seat to go look for Sanam.
Rehan's Room
Rehan went into his room in a daze. What just happened? Seher was getting married? That too so suddenly? What happened? Why was he asking himself an obvious question? Last night is what happened? That dance. It had been too real for her. He knew, and so did she, that whatever happened there had been mutual. He was not the only one who had felt it. He was damned certain of that. So THIS is the reason she had chosen to cement her relationship with Zain? She wanted to deny her feelings for him? She didn't want to know? He had already known this, but now it seems she wanted to tell the whole world, that she belonged to someone else. But who did she want to send the message to most? HIM? Well he got the message! Loud and clear, just like he told Aahil.
Well if this is what she wanted...then congratulations to her! He supposed he should be feeling some satisfaction? After all, just to deny she had any feelings for him, she was going THIS far? Rehan gave an ironic smile.
Suddenly his phone rang. It was Haya. She said that Faiz was having a location shoot next week, so he had left home this afternoon with his Unit. Badi Ammi had taken Najma visiting to a distant relative's house for the day, but she had had things to do at home, so she didn't go. She asked if he was free, would he come to dinner. It was like a God send to Rehan. He wanted to be out of the house when Seher arrived back with Zain. He didn't trust himself to act normal in front of them. He also could not give fake congratulations and pretend to be happy for them when he was not! He told Haya he will be there in half an hour. He got dressed and got ready to leave the house.
Hallway
After coming out of his room, and entering the hallway on his way to leaving the house, Rehan ran into to Aahil.
"Where are you going Rehan?" Aahil asked, looking a bit worried.
"I'm having dinner with Haya at her place. Faiz is out of town on a shoot, and Badi Ammi and Najma have gone to a relative's house too".
"Oh Ok. Good. Tell her I said Hi".
"Will do. See you later Aahil bhai!"
"Rehan..." called out Aahil as Rehan turned to leave. "Don't say anything about Seher... I mean...Seher's engagement to Haya yet. You see...Zain's parents don't know yet. They're in the States at the moment...so...they sort of want to keep it under wraps till he speaks to them...", Aahil trailed off.
"Don't worry Aahil Bhai. I won't say anything!" said Rehan and walked towards the main entrance of the house.
Just then, he heard the sound of voices. Zain, Seher, and Ishaan were walking in through the main door. Just as Seher was stepping into the house, Rehan was stepping out. For a moment their eyes met. Their gaze held for a second, and Seher looked away first.
"Hey Rehan...you going out?" said Ishaan.
"Yeah. Going to have dinner with Haya".
"Missing Sonia, so don't want to hang around here ha Rehan?" laughed Zain. Rehan gave a small smile, but did not give any response. His eyes moved to Seher for a moment. She was looking anywhere but at him. "Kyon nazarain chura rahi ho Seher?" he thought.
"See you later!" said Rehan in the general direction of all three of them, as he walked out of the entrance of the house and moved towards his car. Rehan walked on and got into his car and drove away to Haya's house. As he was leaving through the main gate, through the rear view mirror, for a second he thought he saw Seher, who was standing in the main doorway, looking at his car leave. But then she was gone just as quickly, that he wondered if he had imagined it.
Haya's Place
Haya was really happy to see Rehan. They had not had much one on one time for awhile. Since they found out they were siblings, they had really connected. Haya had wasted no time telling him that she wanted to get to know him better. Haya had been that one person with whom he had felt fully accepted, after his Mother's truth had been revealed. Aahil and Sanam never behaved differently with him, and he knew that Aahil was always there for him. But with Haya, he had found a true connection. A sibling. Something he had never had. He knew from things he had found out that Haya's Mother Najma had been his Father's first love. His collage girlfriend. They had broken up, but never really got over each other. Despite getting engaged to Haya's aunt Nikhat, he still had not forgotten Najma. In between he had got involved briefly with his Ammi, and that is how HE had come to be. But their relationship had never been something worth preserving. They had never really loved each other.
Haya's Badi Ammi knew the whole story, and she had told him that his father HAD offered to marry Tanveer, because of him, but she had been too obsessed with Sanam and Seher's Father Asad to want to marry his Dad. She had always wanted Asad Ahemed Khan. They had been childhood friends, and then later she had come to Bhopal and lied to them that her business had caught fire and started living at their house. Old Khan Villa, where Haya now lived. She had lived there at the same time as Zoya, Sanam and Seher's Mum. They had had clashes because they both had feelings for Asad. But Asad had only ever had eyes for Zoya. His Mother had been jealous of her. Despite her best efforts she was not able to break them apart, and that is why in the end she had killed them. But even in death, they had been together. So his Mother lost again.
Sometimes he wondered at the women she had been? What sort of person behaves like this? He remembered how she had always tried to play the victim card with him? How she had implied that she was left high and dry with a child? That is why he had always felt like he had to keep her confidence. He had felt like maybe it was what she had been through that made her so greedy for money? But the truth had been something else altogether? She had played HIM as well! Her own child? Thanks to her, he had lost the only girl he had truly loved as well? Now he may never get her back?
Haya noticed that her brother was unusually quiet? Throughout dinner he seemed preoccupied with his thoughts? He was usually a lot more animated than this? What was wrong with him? Maybe he was missing Sonia? She smiled.
"What's the matter Bhaijaan? Your very quiet tonight? Missing Sonia ha? Too bad I didn't get to meet her this weekend. It's been crazy with Faiz having to go out of town and having to look after Najma. How rude must she think me? Being your sister and all? ... Just as well that I have met her a few times when I was in Mumbai?"
"It's OK Haya. It was a flying visit anyway. I knew you were busy. You have a kid".
"Next time she comes to town, you have to bring her here for dinner or lunch or something? After all, who knows, she might become my Bhabhi? So I have to make a good impression?" said Haya winking at Rehaan and smiling.
Seeing Haya's smiling face and expectant look, Rehan could not lie to her.
"Actually Haya...Sonia and I...broke up!
"What? WHY Bhaijaan? I thought you really liked her? I really liked her too?" said Haya shaking her head.
"It's complicated Haya".
"I HATE that line. What is so complicated? Either you love her or you don't?"
"Exactly! I don't. That is the problem. I mean I DO love her, but not the way you should love someone you consider spending your life with! Once you have felt that feeling, and know what it's like, you KNOW when you don't feel it. And with Sonia...I didn't feel it!"
Haya shook her head again. Then suddenly she looked up at Rehan.
"What do you mean...once you have felt that feeling? Are you...Bhaijaan...you're not talking of the time when you had feelings for...Sanam?"
"NO! No Haya! Not at all? What I felt for Sanam was NOT that feeling! I realised it later. Yes I had feelings for Sanam. I cared about her. But what I felt for her was more like a first crush. She was the first girl I really got close to. Really had a connection with. We became friends, and she became important to me. I thought it was love, but I was wrong!"
"So then who? Who are you talking of Bhaijaan?"
"Haya...there is no point..." Rehan said, trying to stop this discussion. Suddenly Haya looked at Rehan, and a certain clarity came into her eyes.
"SEHER...! It's Seher isn't it?" said Haya, looking at Rehan squarely. He could not hide from the direct look in those eyes. Haya was always direct, and she spoke her mind.
"How did you...?" Rehan left the sentence incomplete.
"Whenever the two of you are in the same place together, I sensed something? Like a "vibe" of some sort? An undercurrent? I told myself it was my imagination. Like the first night Seher came back from London, and you came home from Mumbai? I saw the way you looked at her for a second before you avoided looking at her, till I told you that you had not said Hello to her? The way you both spoke to each other? It was so loaded. I knew that Seher had issues with you, after finding out about your Ammi...so I never broached the subject much with Sanam. But that night when I saw your reaction to seeing her?...But I dismissed it, coz I knew you had Sonia in your life. Then on Najma's birthday, it seemed like Seher was trying her best to avoid you, and she was not even happy that she had to take a ride home with you? I knew something was up? Where you and she...I mean...Bhaijaan, did you both like each other, before everyone found out the truth about your Ammi?"
"I don't know what she was...but I loved her Haya".
"And you still do? That is why you broke up with Sonia?"
"Yes!"
"Then WHAT is the issue Bhaijaan? Why don't you tell her how you feel? You took such a big step and broke it off with Sonia...? But here you are looking so miserable? Why wont you just tell Seher how you feel?"
"I can't Haya. I just can't! There is no point..."
"Yes there is! You have to tell her! If you're afraid she will reject you...well that is a risk you are going to have to take bhaijaan!"
"It's not that... you don't understand...you..."
"Then what IS it Bhaijaan? Help me understand?"
"She is marrying ZAIN OK? THAT is the reason!"
"WHAT?" said Haya in complete shock. "Marrying ZAIN? Since when? I know they are very close...but...marrying him...What...?"
"Your not supposed to know. I don't think even I was supoosed to know. Sanam and Aahil Bhai told me. She told them this morning. Zain's parents are in the States, so they dont know yet. So Aahil bhai told me not to tell anyone. I think they told me out of courtesy. It all happened suddenly they said. But I KNOW why she did it". Haya looked at him quizzically. Rehan explained to her what had happened the night before. The dance, how he had felt like Seher was also feeling the same as him. Then he had broken up with Sonia, and this morning, he had found out that Seher had agreed to marry Zain. Rehan told Haya that this was Seher's way of denying her feelings.
"No. She is running from them. Not denying them Bhaijaan! It's possible that she thinks since you are with Sonia, there is no point in her feeling anything for you? Maybe that's why she suddenly said yes to marry Zain? You HAVE to tell her Bhaijaan. You have to tell her that you broke up with Sonia and why! Sometimes, a girl needs a bit of reassurance! She needs to know where she stands. Seher acts tough, but she is vulnerable inside. Maybe she is afraid to throw caution to the wind, in case she just falls flat on her face? TELL her Bhaijaan! This is your chance. Don't lose it. She hasn't married Zain yet. It's not too late! Do something before it's too late! Please!"
"Haya...I wish it were that simple..."
"IT IS that Simple Bhaijaan! Pyaar paney ke liye himmat chaiyye Bhaijaan! Agar aap iss waqt himmat nahin dikayi, toh shayad apne pyaar ko hamesha ke liye ko degi? Can you live with that Bhaijaan? Knowing that you had a chance to do something and you didn't? Are you really going to let your love walk out of your life a SECOND time? Last time maybe things were not in your hands? But THIS time? This time it is! Yeh moka muth gawao Bhaijaan! Usse jakar kehe do!"
"Haya...What will I do without you?" said Rehan, his eyes full of emotion.
"Hey...what are sisters for?" said Haya smiling, but even her eyes were filled with emotion.
"Haya...I have never said this before... But out of everything that came out of the sorry mess our lives became 3 years ago, the BEST thing was finding out I had a sister! And a sister like YOU!"
"I love you too Bhaijaan!" said Haya smiling. Rehan came over to her and hugged her. They hugged each other for a long moment.
"I love you Haya! You're the best sister in the world!"
"Go Bhaijaan. Jakar usse batha do!"
"Haan...Main batha dunga, but tomorrow! It's too late tonight!" said Rehan.
"Yes...it's nearly midnight!" said Haya.
They stepped away from each other. Brother and sister smiled at each other. It was a perfect moment. Possibly the most perfect they had shared to date. Whatever his Father Imran Qureshi had done or not done in his life, he definitely did one thing right! That was giving him a sister like Haya!
To be continued...
Hi All,
So finally managed to update this. I have been very busy. Will try to get the next part up soon. Coz that is when we come to the business end of the story! Rehan's sister Haya has encouraged him to speak to Seher, despite her engagement to Zain! Stay tuned to see what happens next time!
Of course, if you liked this update, please dont forget to hit the "Like" button and leave your comments! Love to read them! I cant reply to each one individually always. But I DO appreciate ALL comments made!
