Happy New Year is set for a record opening on day one beating the 32 crore nett figure set by Dhoom 3 last year. The film is releasing the day after Diwali which is the best day for collections The last time a universally record breaking was set was Ek Tha Tiger in 2012 and Happy New Year will be hoping for a repeat. The aim will be to set a new first day high in every circuit of India.
The film is three hours long which does limit the shows per screen but the last two years have seen the longer films sustaining better be it Dhoom 3 to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. A similar case can be expected from Happy New Year if content is accepted which will mean more records after the initial weekend.
Another major benchmark for the film can be a century weekend which has never happened before with Dhoom 3 falling a little short last year. The advance opened late with a couple of the major chains starting on Wednesday afternoon but despite that the advance for will be around 25-30% for day one which will mean sales of around 13-14 crore nett for day one even before a show has started.

Mumbai Top Ten - Happy New Year Targets Oldest Record

Happy New Year will be chasing the all time record in Mumbai circuit which is still held by 3 Idiots. It was the only lifetime record all around the world which Dhoom 3 failed to achieve last year. Happy New Year will have a good chance content willing as Gujarat has an extended holiday over the Diwali period.

The Mumbai circuit has became about Gujarat today as not only does it open well but can sustain much better than the Mumbai/Thane and Maharashtra belt which forms the other big chunk of the circuit. The last few years have seen big crashes in Mumbai when Gujarat is not on board. The last one being Bang Bang released a few weeks back.

Bang Bang is struggling to hit the 40 crore nett mark in Mumbai which is 50% less than what Happy New Year will be targeting. There have been ten films which have crossed 50 crore nett in Mumbai circuit and the list includes old releases like 3 Idiots and Golmaal 3. The latter had the content and put up huge numbers in Gujarat in Diwali week. Last years Diwali release Krrish 3 did very well in Gujarat but considering practically a week long holiday in the state the figures should have been better. Below are the all time top ten grossers in Mumbai circuit..
