Wow very impressive, Geet is really determine to get herself for training, she straight ended up to Maan's house the very next day itself.
Maan is really rude and arrogant, keep downgrading Geet. But I love the way Geet answer him back, sounds really funny. It was entertaining reading both Maan-Geet conversation.
Dev made the right move, he triggered Maan to take up the challenge to train Geet.
Both Annie and Geet are clueless with Maan's attitude.

Thanks for the compliments dear!
And I am glad you enjoyed the update so much!
MG convo is heavily borrowed from the original yet many dialogues are mine there! So I think the mix of mine and the movie's dialogues made it a very potent cocktail! Glad you liked it!

CHAPTER 4. LET THE MADNESS... ERR... TRAINING BEGIN!

It was the day after the bet was established and once again Maan, Dev and Annie were seated at the dining table with the brother duo discussing the business and their sister rolling her eyes. Once again the bell rang interrupting their breakfast and once again Annie jumped up at the prospect of opening the door. But unlike the other day, today she knew who was calling at this time of the day. She scrambled off to get to the door. Annie was very eager to meet Geet for a single reason and that was from now on, she won't be the only female staying in the house. Once all the greetings were over, Annie brought Geet over to their dining room.

After declining the invitation for having breakfast with them, "Nahi ji! Main na ghar se khaake nikli hoon!" (No Ma'am! I have already eaten at home!), Geet sat down on one of the chairs waiting for Annie to finish her breakfast as Annie was the one to take her over to her new lodging. Her luggage had already been transported to her room by the servants. Geet, bored out of her mind, looked around for some amusement. Her eyes fell on Maan and Dev's eating style. Both ate with knife and fork and Geet looked at them with wide eyes. It was not that Geet had never seen people eat with kaanta-churi', after all she has been working as a waitress for last few years, seeing people eat in such a manner was not new to her. But till now she had dismissed the eating style preferring to eat by her hand than all this taam-jhaam'.

It was only now Geet realised that this will be part of her training too. She would have to eat in such manner too. She gulped and looked at her hands. Wasn't today she ate her parathas with her hands while sitting on the sofa Indian style? She looked over at Annie and noticed how poised she seemed to be seated. She realised that she will have to abandon all her carefree mannerism and behavior. Hey Babaji! It was only now the enormity of the bet and the upcoming training struck her. Feeling nervous she almost did not notice Annie calling her name.

Geet looked up to see Annie smiling at her, "Come on! Let me show you your room!" Geet nodded and followed Annie as Annie gave her a tour of the whole house and then dropped her off to her room on the first floor with a side note that she will pick Geet up after an hour so that they can kick start her training.

Geet looked around the room with wide eyes. It was grand and larger than her former room. A four poster bed with curtains around it was placed right opposite the door. On both sides of the bed, there was a huge window overlooking the lawn outside. On one side was a dressing table with a large mirror and on the other side was a door which Geet guessed led to bathroom. Right beside the door was a large wardrobe. Once done with looking around, Geet ran upto the window and looked outside eagerly. In front of her, the vast lawn lay. There were swings to play with, trees to sit under, flower beds to look at. Geet sighed as she imagined herself lying under the shade enjoying a good book, playing with the swings, smelling the flowers. She sighed dreamily. How wonderful it would be to stay in the house and enjoy the lawn forever! Then her head snapped up and she shook herself. Geet! Tu paagal hogayi hai! Aise sapne dekhna chod de! Jab kayi saal baad tere paas bahut paise aa jaayenge na, toh aisa hi ek ghar khareed lena! Lekin abhi tu aaj ki baat kar! Training pe dhyaan de! (Geet! Have you gone mad? Stop dreaming such dreams! When one day you will have more money, you can buy a house just like this. But right now you focus on today. Focus on your training!) She nodded to herself and sat on the bed waiting for Annie to come back.

An hour later, Annie and Geet entered the study to see Maan and Dev sitting in their armchairs reading newspapers. Annie rolled her eyes and took a seat nearby. Geet stood on the threshold of the room wringing her hands nervously. Maan looked up from the paper, gave her a stern glare and pointed towards the chair which was in front of Dev and Maan's chair facing both the men. Geet took a deep breath, walked towards the chair and took the seat. Maan folded his paper, got up from his seat and started pacing.

"Geet! Before we start our training sessions, there are some rules that we want you to follow!", Maan barked and Geet nodded with trepidation.

Maan paused for a second and then spoke, "Rule No. 1. You will follow every order of mine!"

Geet nodded vigorously.

"Rule No. 2. You will address me as Sir!", Maan continued.

Geet nodded.

"And Rule No. 3. You are speaking in only English from today! Got it?", Maan barked.

Geet nodded and Maan narrowed his eyes, "Ghade ki tarah sar hilaana band karo aur mooh kholke bolo! Stop nodding like a donkey and say something!) Or do you not even understand English?"

Geet huffed, "Mujhe English samajh aati hai! Thodi kam seekhi hoon, unpadh nahi!" (I can understand English! I am less learned, not illiterate!)

"Speak in English please!", Dev intoned from behind the paper.

Maan frowned at Dev, stalked towards him and grabbed the newspaper out of his hand only to see Dev holding a camcorder. Maan raised an eyebrow at Dev and Dev smiled sheepishly, "I want to record your sessions!" He raised the camcorder and looked through the view finder, "Say cheese Maan Bro!"

Maan glared at him and Dev retorted, "Oh come on bro! It is my money you are playing with. I have every right to record the session to make sure you are not wasting my money!"

Maan narrowed his eyes for a while and then rolling his eyes went back to his pacing.

Dev grinned gleefully and recorded the session more blatantly.

"And Geet! Do you understand me?", Maan growled.

" Understand!", Geet squeaked and Maan stopped pacing. He turned around and looked at Geet, "Understood! Not understand! School mein past tense present tense toh sikhaaya hoga right?" (You must have been taught past tense and present tense at school right?)

Geet frowned in confusion and Annie helped her, "Bhoot kaal? Bhavishya kaal?"

Geet's face brightened and she nodded, "Main samajh gayi!"

Dev looked at Geet in concern, "School mein English subject nahi tha kya?" (Didn't you have English subject at school?)

Geet shrugged, "Tha!"

Maan glared at Geet, "Then how you donot know present tense and past tense? English class mein karti kya thi?" (What were you doing in your English class?)

Geet grinned eagerly, "Main na, apne saheliyon ke saath Chane ke khet' gaane par dance steps bithaati thi!" (I was setting the dance steps for the song Chane ke khet' with my friends!)

Dev chuckled, Maan slapped his forehead and Annie shook her head. All three thought of same thing; we are doomed!

Few hours later...

Geet was looking out of the window in her room when Maan stormed in and threw a bunch of books onto her bed. Geet looked at him, then at the books and then back at Maan and frowned, "Yeh sab kya hai?"

Maan raised an eyebrow and Geet amended her words, "What is this?"

Maan shook his head, "Is' is used for singular, are' is used for plural! This' is used for singular, these' is used for plural."

Geet frowned in confusion and Maan rolled his eyes. His massaged the bridge of his nose thinking and then he looked at her, "Singular means Ek vachan, Plural is bahu vachan!"

Geet blinked and then Maan saw understanding dawn on her face as her eyes lit up and a wide smile came on her lips. Maan rolled his eyes.

Geet asked her question again, "What are these?"

Maan smirked at her, "These are grammar books. Go through all of them today!"

Geet's eyes widened, "Aaj hi? I mean today only?"

Maan gave her a sarcastic smile, "Yes my dear! Today only!"

"But?...How?...One day?...", Geet squeaked and stuttered unable to express herself. If only she had been allowed to speak in Hindi, she would have told Maan what exactly she thought of his latest idea but unfortunately she was stuck with stammering in English and the inability to express herself. She huffed in anger.

"How? I don't know! Pull an all-nighter! I don't care! Get it done! I already have to work on your accent; I don't have the patience to correct your every grammatical mistake! So you read it and better get it done today!", Maan retorted.

Geet looked at the books in worry.

"But what if... I not... understand...words?", Geet spoke slowly unaccustomed to speaking English and thinking her words thoroughly to get it right.

Maan was about to point out that you are supposed to use the verb do' before not' here but gave up. Forget it! What are the books for? They will teach her!

Maan pulled out a book from the stack, "This is Dictionary; in your language, shabdkosh. It translates English words into Hindi. Problem solved. Use it and enjoy your study night!"

Saying his piece Maan stalked away leaving behind a whining Geet, "Hey Babaji!"

It was late night and Annie, who was about to go to bed, frowned when she saw the study room's light on. Oh God! Yeh Maan Bhai aur Dev Bhai bhi na! Work, work and work! That's all they do all day! Who gives a damn that the body needs eight hours' sleep right? Who cares if it needs rest? God! I will kill those two. She stormed over to their room and entered it only to stop short at the scene in front of her. Right in front of her sat Maan and Dev holding a book in their hand, going through it while another stack was waiting by the table for their perusal. Annie frowned, Itni raat ko kya padh rahe hain? (What are they reading at such a late time?)She narrowed her eyes and stepped forward. Her eyes widened as she realised that the books were of hindi words and grammar. Why the hell are they reading this? As if understanding her questions, they looked up. Annie raised an eyebrow in question and Maan replied, "Ek vachan! Bahu vachan!", and went back to reading the book as if that explained the whole situation. Annie blinked in the confusion and then looked at Dev who smiled at her, "To explain things to Geet, we have to translate the terms from English to Hindi! So we are learning hindi terms here!"

"Dev", Maan interrupted him, "Did you know present tense is known as vartaman kaal in hindi?"

"Oh really?", Dev looked surprised, "Interesting!"

Both the men went back to their books leaving a slack jawed Annie standing at the door.

Her brothers must have turned mad; Annie decided. She gave them another glance; definitely mad.

NOTE:

I have been requested by some of the readers to either write the dialogues in English or atleast translate them. I have attempted the translation option above. I did not translate everything as some of the lines are repeated by Geet in English and some of the lines are so simple, that they do not need translation like the line, "Yeh Maan Bhai aur Dev Bhai bhi na!"

Please tell me if you are ok with this selective translation. If you people are ok, then I will translate the earlier chapters in the same manner too.

Also I made Maan impose that English speaking rule on Geet, so that I won't have to translate much. She will still continue to speak in hindi some places, but there I will put up the translations.

And the whole grammar mistakes which Geet speaks with are not overdone. I live in rural area and the present and past tense mistakes and singular and plural mistakes is something all my college friends used to suffer with.

Thanks, take care and have fun,

Kalpana
