Randhir's P.O.V

He shut his eyes and slumped on a bench nearby. The cacophony in his head was growing louder every second. He was being smothered by the nauseating display of emotions. "What did I want from you,Mom and Dad? To see us a family, that's all," he groaned. Dysfunctional maybe, yet, together. But here he was, shipwrecked, trying to hold the broken pieces of a failed relationship. He could not bear it any longer. His pain was now bursting at the seams. Just then, that very moment, she walked past him. "Hark," his heart blurted out .She had walked past him a million times before, but today, he wanted her to stop. He didn't know why? "I want my nemesis to stop and console me? How desperate can I get," But desperate times call for desperate measures,he mused. And Voila! It was like she heard his inner turmoil and halted abruptly. She stopped and turned towards him. Her eyes scanned his face and she immediately knew something was wrong, terribly wrong. She was quiet initially, but in seconds, she broke into an affectionate smile and looked at him lovingly. His eyes did not believe the sight in front of him. He was expecting this reaction from her at that moment, yet, her empathetic demeanor was not something he had planned. It had been just a few days since his confusion had paved way for his realization. The truth had hit him hard, damn, pretty hard. He,Randhir Singh Shekhawat, had fallen in love with his nemesis,Sanyukta Agarwal .He was in denial for a long time since then, but today , he had to bow down in front of his gargantuan ego.He needed her. He fought with his conflicting thoughts, broken from inside, he didn't want to crack down any further. But then , she smiled again, and held her arms out. He hesitated initially, fumbling in the darkness trying to figure a way out. Then he realized,he had reached an impasse. There was no way out except one. He saw it,in her eyes , a ray of hope, like a light beaming at him from the end of the abyss. He finally surrendered to her charms, leapt ahead and held her in a tight embrace.
Then began their journey, their friendship. It was all new for him. He had never let anyone enter his closely guarded thoughts, let alone his heart. But her, she was special. He let her waltz into his heart and rule his mind. The moments he spent with her were surreal. He wanted time to stand still then and there. He wanted to clip off those tentacles of doubt that were slithering inside his head.
" This is not for real , you know that,"the voices hissed inside his head. The voices turned uglier and spoke further "She is weaving a web of intricate lies,Beware! He hushed the voices. He knew what they were trying to convey and yet he was getting entangled in the web each day.
He thought ,
She hears me,atleast pretends to,
She speaks to me , atleast her lips move,
She protects me, from others, not herself
We dance , just me on her tunes
She looks deeply into my eyes, and I let her gauge all my emotions.
He let out a sigh and buried his face in his hands. Why had he gotten himself in this mess? He knew. He had known all along.
He had snooped on their conversation that fateful day. "You will have to tell him that your engagement is canceled and not postponed," his mentor's cold voice had hit him hard.
"But Sir, I cant lie to him, that's not fair ," She had retaliated.
" You will do as I say, no questions asked," He had barked at her.
Unwilling at first, she too, caved in.
"Why would they bother? Its not their heart at stake," he had thought then.
He closed his eyes yet again, as the events of that day played on in his head. His melancholic eyes had believed her, even though he knew. He had known all along. All this was a sham!He knew all along, but he had played on.
"It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all ,"he thought. But then, he was not ready for the repercussions. Imagining a scenario and accepting the reality are diametrically opposite. He never knew the effect she had on him.He never knew he would be this miserable by her absence. Yet again, he had not planned for this. His ego was shattered and the shards were strewn all over the place. He was stranded , yet again, broken!
I knew you would leave, but now that you are gone,
Why is it that I still think of you?
Why does the pain gnaw at my wounds?
I try to bury your memories six feet under,
but it surfaces through my soul leaving it asunder.
"Arghhh,"he cried in pain. The voices in his head grew louder and plunged into silence.A deafening silence. He flailed his arms in exasperation when his hand hit something and it fell on the floor. There it lay, her memory in a tattered book .
An unruffled red carcass sans the thorns.
Bereft of emotions. Just like her, he thought.
The rose had lost its smell, and the thorns, were lodged in his soul!
