There are trailers which don't give you the right vibe and then there are trailers you can't help but ogle at. Ungli was one brilliant trailer I have seen in a while. It has a sinister feel that looks delicious, it has the X Factor which is Dharma films haven't shown since Kurbaan and mostly it is edgy to the hilt. I feel ecstatic when such trailers make their way amidst the predictable ones we see everyday. Ungli attempts to say a pertinent story in way that won't be preachy. They are rebels fighting corruption and blatantly showing the middle finger to those who deserve it.
Rensil D'Silva is always known for compelling work. With Kurbaan, he touched issues which other filmmakers coat well in diplomacy and serve tactfully. The same boisterous vein still remains and Rensil here builds a sustainable suspenseful set up that shows glimpses of its truly intriguing tapestry. I can trust him to keep the audiences hooked, latched and invested in his story.
Emraan Hashmi in a still from movie Ungli'
Milap Zaveri keeps the one liners quirky and crisp, giving the trailer its wicked feel. At a cue, Emraan Hashmi says, "Jitna dum Aapke ek haath mein Nahi, utna dum hamaari ek Ungli mein hai!" When there is Zaveri working with his pen, it is a dialogue fest of sorts.
But most of all it is the well cast ensemble that is striking. Emraan Hashmi is finally out of his sleepwalking zone from Raja Natwarlal and seems very much himself. Randeep Hooda is unmissable. But unfortunately Kangana Ranaut is barely present in the trailer. I hope the film taps in her potential well and doesn't merely use her as a glam prop. The trailer also shows a hint of Shraddha Kapoor's sensuous dance number almost a prelude to what people will witness in ABCD Sequel.
I wasn't particularly fascinated by Sanjay Duty. Of course he is fantastic. When is he not? But he isn't anything different. And given that he looks almost like his character from Policegiri, it isn't comforting to see him seeming similar.
And finally, Rensil has made an engaging film which has the demeanor of a hard hitting thriller and is designed intelligently. But for the masses who want to see an Emraan Hashmi film, Zaveri has thrown in lines like, "Yeh toh meri speciality hai" for a scene where the serial kisser is at his job. For others there is a delicious film awaiting it seems.
