Nawazuddin Siddique's 'Liar's Dice' is India's Oscar Officia

India's official entry for the Oscars 2015 is the National Award winning film Liar's Dice.

National Award winning Hindi film "Liar's Dice", starring acclaimed actors Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, is India's entry for the best foreign film category at the 87th Academy Awards.

The film has been chosen by a 12-member jury appointed by the Film Federation of India (FFI), and out of a record number of 30 shortlisted films.

"'Liar's Dice' is the chosen film as India's Oscar entry this time," FFI general secretary Supran Sen told IANS.

"The last time we had a record number was 25 films way back in 2001," Sen added.


The movie, debut directed by Malayalam actress Geetu Mohandas, tells the story of a young tribal mother who, along with her three-year-old daughter, embarks on a journey in search of her missing husband. On the way, she meets an army deserter who decides to accompany them to their destination.

"Liar's Dice" won the best cinematography honour for Rajeev Ravi and best actress title for Geetanjali at the 61st National Film Awards.

It has also travelled to film festivals across the globe. Its world premiere was held at the Mumbai Film Festival last year and it was later screened at Sundance Film Festival as well as at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Of late, India has been quick to catch the seasonal Oscar fever, which essentially begins with the announcement of our official entry for the awards' foreign language category. And this time, as reported by Variety, the Film Federation of India (FFI) has picked an indie gem called Liar's Dice, a road drama about a tribal woman's journey to find her missing husband. Haven't heard much about it? No worries, here is all you need to know

-It is the directorial debut of Geethu Mohandas -a Malayalam film actress who also wrote the film.

-The film has garnered critically acclaim in the festival circuits. It premiered at the Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) last year. This year it was selected at the Sundance Film Festival , the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014.

-It won big at the National Awards earlier this year, with Thapa bagging the best actress title and Mohandas' cinematographer husband Rajeev Ravi winning the award for best cinematography.

Set in a village near the Indo-Tibetan border, the film's story follows a young tribal woman whose husband has failed to return home after leaving for work in Delhi many months ago.She decides to go to Delhi with her young daughter to search for him and on the way meets an army deserter, Siddiqui, who realizing the perils of the journey ahead for them, decides to accompany them to their destination.

-It beat 30 other films to represent India at the Oscars 2015, including the Hindi movies Shahid, Queen, Mary Kom, Mardaani and 2 States.


-India has been sending films to the Oscar category since 1957, but it has never managed to win.
