TV stars opt for needlework

Not the silk and skein kind, but the masochistic embroidery of an ink-and-needle tattoo. Shweta Teotia gets a couple of men to flex some muscle

I got my tattoo long ago. I was barely out of school then and my friends and I were contemplating the various places we were to go to pursue our studies. But we decided to take a trip before that. One of my friends had her boyfriend in Hong Kong and so we decided to make a stopover there. I remember clearly that there was this place called the Chilly Club where we got completely sloshed. After that, in our drunken state we went to a tattoo studio and got our tattoos done. We were Bon Jovi fans; he had a Superman tattoo and so we too got the same mark on our arms. Now I've become too old for my Superman tattoo and feel embarrassed about it. However, it rekindles fond memories of my younger days so I've decided to keep it.

I am a big fan of the Lord of the Rings series and I wear Gandalf - the wizard from the movie— on my arm. It is a different thing, though, that I got it done before the movie released, in July 2001 at Amsterdam. It hurt a lot, especially with the colouring and shading and all, and took around two hours to get done. I remember that the tattoo studio was almost closing for the day when I went there but the guy did it for me as he was also a Lord of the Rings fan. I am still very comfortable with my tattoo, and believe it is something you should really love as it is to last a lifetime. To do it otherwise would be very stupid.

Well, this particular tattoo is one I got done for a party. I don't have a permanent tattoo yet but will get one soon. I will do something that also goes with the kind of roles that I do.
Preferably, it should be something cool and trendy. However, I like to stay away from anything too whacky or flashy. Aesthetics are important to me, even on a tattoo.

I can proudly say that mine was the first tattoo in the city. I used to sing in my college band and thought it would be a great way to score with the chicks. I was always trying to be cool, and thought it would be amazing to take my shirt off while performing. That time there were no studios or parlours for a tattoo so I headed straight for Dr Khoia's clinic at Fort. My tattoo is that of an eagle gearing for flight and says all about my early days when I was only spreading my wings.

I was all of sixteen when I got my tattoo done. Although we were in the US, my parents still did not approve of it. I had a hard time explaining things to them. That time it was only an OM symbol. When I came to Mumbai I got it touched up with a tribal design. I have a Trishul, a dumroo and so on, on my arms. I am quite a believer and thought it was better to get some mythological symbols tattooed instead of something stupid like my girlfriend's name.
