What I love about EBI is that the leads (here I am including RP/Kalli/Laddo) have by and large stuck to their characterisations unlike most T.V.shows where one sees large scale transformation, sometimes massacre of characters. In this post I would like to highlight MJ's characterisation. This guy has always put his duty before his love.
Lets take MJ the accused rapist/murderer - Even though he was innocent he was willing to take the flak for his brother's supposed crimes because he felt a sense of duty towards his foster mother, whose love he always yearned for but never got. He could not let his foster family lose their only biological son. This sense of duty was so enormous that he was willing to suppress his love for Tara and let her face the prospect of widowhood but refused to help her prove his innocence. It was only after he was freed of the burden by the appearance of Radha that he let his wife know about his feelings for her.
In the leader track, he let his sense of duty towards avenging the man/woman who wronged his family take precedence over his revelation to Tara that he was alive. He let her suffer (and suffered with her) but kept his feelings bottled till his mother came along and made him see his sacrifice is meaningless and counter productive because if Tara knows he is alive, she will become stronger and not weaker as he thought she would. So only when he realised that his love will not come in the way of his duty that he revealed himself to her.
In the current track, his duty as a bodyguard was all important to him because he was doing it for his Pari. He kept warding off all emotions which would come in the way of discharging his duty. Yes, he did not remember his past and hence his Tara but he knew the two had a strong connect, right from the first day he met her. Yet he suppressed his feelings and went by what was on the surface rather than dig deeper for he feared that what he would find would come in the way of discharging his duty. It is only after Nandu corroborated Tara's story and urged him to listen to his heart that he rushed to save his love and her life before it was too late. In other words, it is only when he realised that his duty as Sia's bodyguard is meaningless if the woman he was protecting wasn't Sia in the first place but his own wife whom he had unknowingly sent to get married to another man and her life is in danger that he acted.
So MJ has always been consistent in his actions although they bring about so much of heartache to him, his beloved Tara and all us viewers.
All this angst is not without a positive side. Once MJ realises the value of his love he is passionate in displaying his love. We got some of the most passionate and romantic Mriara scenes after the convict and leader tracks. Hopefully next week will be the beginning of more such scenes post this amnesia track. I'm sure Tara and all us Mriara fans will be amply rewarded for our patient wait.
