Before Sahil could call Samrat through the loudspeaker system, Samrat opened the door and came out with one of his hostages. He had a gun pointed at his now cowering, blubbering father-in-law.
"Samrat beta! Ye aap kya kar rahe ho? Mujhe chhod do, beta! Mein...mein..."
"Shut up! Kya billi ke tara 'mein mein' bolti hain aap?" mocked an increasingly agitated Samrat.
"Saroj! Saroj! Dekho, mera kya haal hua!"
Saroj did not utter a word and was trying her hardest to not tremble and cry. Anu looked as though she might faint. but both ladies forced themselves to stay calm. Innocent lives were at stake. They just looked coldly at Devi and his obviously deranged son-in-law.
Sahil suspected Samrat was intoxicated - on what he was not sure.
"Mr. Rathore - I just want to talk to you," said Sahil as calmly as possible. He was deliberately being extra polite, hoping Samrat would lower his guard, even slightly.
"Inspector! Do you think I'm a fool? I have been watching you. If you want Urmi dead then by all means, keep doing what you are doing!"
"So Urmi is still alive?" Sahil asked with forced quietness.
"Yes, for now!" screamed Samrat. "Tell you people to stand back or I swear, I will kill everyone inside!"
"Who is inside Mr. Rathore?"
"Why should I tell you?" said Samrat and then suddenly focusing on Sahil, he scowled. "You! You were the one who dragged me from my office! Me! Samrat Singh Rathore! You are a worthless piece of scum! I can buy and sell your entire police department with my money! And today you will pay for your crime!"
"What do you want Mr. Rathore?"
Samrat laughed. "What do I want? I just want my life to go back to what it was before Madamji ruined it all! This is all her fault."
"So why are you punishing everyone else? It doesn't have to be this way. We can talk about it like rational men."
"Are you married Inspector?"
Sahil felt this was a golden opportunity to try to create a bond with Samrat so he decided to lie.
"I was...but my stupid, selfish wife divorced me, took my son and left me. Women need to be controlled Mr. Rathore. I understand that!"
Anu and Saroj looked at Sahil in wonder. He shook his head imperceptibly and the ladies understood what game Sahil was playing.
"So you know what it's like for someone, a woman, to not know her place? I am her pati parmeshwar. How could she forget that? And if you feel the same way, why did you arrest me?"
"Mr. Rathore, I'm sorry. I had to follow the law but if it was in my hands, I wouldn't have lifted a finger to help Mrs. Rathore. She needs to know her place. I agree with you."
Samrat nodded happily.
"Mr. Rathore, I need to ask. Is Gaurav ji okay?"
"He's alive, if that's what you want to know."
There was the sound of screeching tyres and Sahil turned around in alarm. It was Samrat's family - Shashi, Rudra, Aditi, Diwekar and Kanchan. Fortunately, Mandira was visiting her maternal grandparents.
"Are Samrat beta! Tum thhik to ho na beta," yelled Shashi. For a moment Sahil's jaw dropped. This crazy woman was asking the gun toting lunatic if he was all right?
"Aap ko kya lagta hai, Pujya Matashree?" asked Samrat angrily.
"Samrat, what are you doing?" asked Rudra. "Have you completely lost your mind?"
"You always think it's me, don't you Papa. I'm not crazy. The world around me is crazy."
"Samrat, put that gun down!" yelled a suddenly animated Diwekar.
"Bhaiya, Devarji, please!" yelled Aditi and Kanchan simultaneously.
"Shut up! Shut up!" screamed Samrat, getting more agitated. Devi was openly sobbing by now.
Sahil signaled one of his teammates to remove Samrat's family. They all agreed that it was best for safety - all but one that is. Shashi adamantly refused to budge.
"Beta, mein tumhare paas aa rahin hoon, ek minute, haa beta?"
Shashi ran forward and for a second, Samrat got distracted. This is exactly what Sahil was waiting for. Taking careful aim, he fired.
