With due respect you can put any SRK film against Lagaan on IF and it will get more votes. Star influences votes more than cinema here.

BTW why comment on taste? Lagaan is not good cinema?

1. Chak De India. In a country obsessed with cricket, Chak De India focused on the unglamorous hockey. That too not just hockey, women's hockey. It is one of SRK's finer works where he plays a realistic character rather than a hammy lover boy.

2. JJWS for its time is a good sports film. Although a copy of Breaking Away' JJWS does well in recreating it. Being the nineties the song and dance routine and romance took away from the themes of social inequity and cycling. Nevertheless, deserves credit for being a good sports film in the nineties.

3. Iqbal is an underrated movie. It doesn't have the commercial packaging and gloss to make it shine. However, with good acting and good execution the movie brings a charming story to life.

4. Excessive length and shoddy editing prevent BMB from being a fantastic movie. Farhan Akhtar gives a fantastic performance. Some of the track sequences are amazing. Sadly, the length was too excruciating to enjoy the whole length.

5. People must be shocked with me ranking Lagaan so low. When it came out, I was a huge fan and watched it over and over again. But over the years I've come to see Lagaan as a flawed film. It fails as a sports team due to excessive unrealism, histrionics and melodrama, song and dance routines, plus romances. It is more like a fairy tale story with some sports thrown in. I'm sure even Aamir Khan would deep down agree that Lagaan was a sell out to commercialism and exoticism, and that a true sports movie would be different.

6. Kai Po Che ranks last. Although I find the sports aspect of Kai Po Che to be executed better than Lagaan, I think sports was not the focus of Kai Po Che. Kai Po Che was more about evolving relationships. It was a coming of age story for three youth who are learning the ways of the world. Cricket was merely a prop to the story, not the story. That is why Lagaan ranks higher simply because cricket was the center.

I haven't seen Paan Singh Tomar or Jannat to rank them.

Side Note: IMO the best sports film I have ever seen is Chariots of Fire

Lagaan was good cinema but CDI was just something else for me. It's easily one of the top five greatest Bollywood films of all time IMO.

I think...it might be partly because Lagaan isn't actually a sports film. It is about the village's rebellion against oppressors, their fight for freedom, the triumph of the underdog, and Bhuvan...complete with a love triangle...it merely uses cricket as a backdrop to tell the story but it isn't actually about cricket.I never saw Lagaan as a sports film, .but CDI is actually a true sports film. It has individual stories, but it's first and foremost about a team ...women's hockey team + coach + support staff and how they triumph in the World Championship despite all odds being against them.

P.S. I didn't vote.
