India's First Prime Minister's Speech excerpt:-
"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."
- Jawaharlal Nehru
(Speech on the midnight of August 15th 1947)

Happy Indepence Day India!!!

Independence Day
August 15, 2014

On this very day, 68 years ago India tasted the joy of freedom after more than 100 years of suffering and suppression under the British Empire. What had been a rich prosperous land, thriving in culture and wealth, had been plundered by the over ambitious English, and it took a lot of bloodshed, struggle and will power to win back what was rightfully ours OUR INDEPENDENCE.

It's during the time of crisis that a nation often discovers the resourceful, capable and honest leaders within it. Several men and women, rose in the eyes of the people as they braved the over-powering British and lead our country to freedom. Jawaharlal Nehru, who was always soft on children, never once lost ground against an English Lord who tried to silence his cries for freedom. He was a diplomat through and through, always knowing what to say. Mahatma Gandhi, is deemed the Father of our Nation, for no mean reason. He made the people realize that only land can be conquered and beaten down, not the spirit. His non-violence movement, was instrumental to us ultimately gaining the much yearned for Independence for the clutches of the Crown. But Subash Chandra Bose, was an altogether different force to reckon with. Even the air he breathed shrieked freedom slogans and he was not one to take a beating, sitting. He was ready to chase the Brits away even if it meant war. Like these men, there were several brave souls who were ready to lay their life for their country without thinking twice.

Today we walk the streets of a free nation. We are free of fear and few of us know what it is to be robbed of our freedom. Today is a day that brings to one's mind the struggle and the innumerable lives lost, and we must send thanks to those haloed beings for doing what they did. They did not win freedom just for themselves, but for generations to come. India is a free country because of them. Let us take it upon ourselves to not just live freely, but to do our ancestors proud by taking our county to great heights in every sphere. Let's take an oath today!!

Happy Independence Day

Today, On This special day, in our country we have holidays for school, colleges, universities, and all government offices.

In the Assembly at 8:30 a.m. the army and scouts march past. And, at 9:30 a.m. the military men give the salute with 38 firings from a shot gun. After the parade, we have the Prime Minister's speech which spells out his vision for the country.

Many renowned dignitaries attend the Independence day function & it is covered live by Doordarshan with hindi & english commentry, reminding us of our struggle for freedom.

I so miss being in India, waking up in the morning to the tune of Saare Jahaan se Accha(yes, my neighbor plays it on full volume early in the morning) & jumping out of bed only to retrieve the remote to watch the live show :-).My bro hoists our flag right after its shown on tv & we have our own flag hoisting...when we were kids we imagined ourselves to be standing on the dais where the prime minister stands & would give our impromptu speeches!!😆.So many memories are evoked on independence day...wish i was there anyways...here's me wishing all my fellow countrymen once again a very Happy Independence Day!!

Thank you

Independent India's First Stamp Featured in Independence Day 2014 Doodle

by NDTV Correspondent, August 15, 2014
independent_indias_first_stamp.jpg

Independent India's first stamp is the subject of Friday's Google doodle, on the occasion of the country's 68th Independence Day.

The first stamp of independent India was issued on 21 November 1947. Independent India's first stamp depicts the Indian tricolour flying high in the clouds, with the slogan Jai Hind (Long Live India) on the top right. The stamp had a blue background and was valued at three and one-half annas (roughly 0.22 India rupees in modern terms).

India has a long and proud history of postal systems that were developed for military and governmental communications long before the arrival of Europeans. When the Britishers and other European colonists eventually displaced the Mughals, their postal systems existed alongside those of many 'independent' states. When the East India Company displaced other powers and brought into existence a British administrative system over most of India, the Indian postal system as we know it today began to take shape.

Although the Indian Post Office was established in 1837, Asia's first adhesive stamp, the Scinde Dawk, was introduced in 1852 by Sir Bartle Frere. The Indian Post System expanded its reach to almost all parts of India, Burma, the Straits Settlements and other areas controlled by the British East India Company.

After the Independence of India in 1947, the Indian postal service continued to function nationwide, provided essential connectivity to far-flung regions of the country. It's not uncommon in India for the postman to read, and indeed write, letters to/ on behalf of those who cannot read or write; a duty that Indian postal employees perform with dedication till date.

The India Independence Day 2014 Google doodle is then a salute to that very spirit, featuring Independent India's first stamp with Friday's date - 15 August 2014 - also featuring in a postal mark-style stamp. However, those hoping for a rather elaborate doodle would be disappointed by the doodle in India's national colours.

NDTV Gadgets wishes all its Indian readers a very happy Independence Day.
