Gautami Gadgil, the new Tulsi, on the pressures of replacing Smriti Iraani in 'Kyunkii...' and minding hubby Ram Kapoor
Was the pressure immense to live up to the iconic image of Tulsi in 'Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' (Star Plus)?
Initially, I was under huge pressure. It took me a while to understand the magnitude of the project that I had taken up. But I trusted Ektaa's (Kapoor) decision and my instincts. I love my job. I am here for that reason. Also, Ram (Kapoor, husband) urged me not to succumb to the strain and just do my best.
What has the feedback been like?
I was prepared for criticism. But I am overwhelmed with the response and am pleasantly surprised by the positive reactions. But I have to grow a lot yet. One needs to improve and be open to suggestions.
Will you be simply duplicating Smriti Z Iraani or bring individual nuances to the character?
I am bad at aping. In all fairness, it's a seven-year-old show and the grass has been laid fabulously by Smriti. I will only have to build on it. But playing Tulsi is not about mimicry. The character would fall apart if that happens. However, I've kept the age of the character and the body language intact.
What does your husband Ram Kapoor say about your performance?
Ram was in Turkey recently shooting for 'Kasamh Se'. So he hasn't seen it yet.
Apparently, Ram pulled the strings to get you this role.
Do you think Ektaa (Kapoor) would have listened if Ram had lobbied for me? Ram is not so silly or childish to lobby for me. Besides, I have my body of work to support me.
How is it getting back on the sets after 'Kehta Hai Dil' ?
It's fabulous. I was missing it when I had to stay at home for my baby Sia.
Did you follow a fitness regime before facing the camera?
Yes, I worked out. But I am genetically blessed. So I didn't have to try too hard.
Do you feel guilty about leaving your baby behind?
When it was time to begin shooting, I did feel nervous as Sia is just a year old. When I was at home, I used to do everything for her. I thought why not do my most while I am not working? But between my mother and mother-in-law, Sia is pampered and looked after well. Also, Balaji has been very kind to me. They have given me flexible working hours.
How much is Sia like you?
Though she looks like Ram she has expressive eyes like mine. Ram and I are both extroverts and adjustable. She seems the same too.
Do you feel possessive now that Ram is open to such admiration after 'Kasamh Se' (Zee)?
Yes, I am a possessive wife and often feel jealous. But Ram knows where to draw the line. I am okay with his female fans though.
What keeps your marriage vibrant?
We are both passionate about life and believe in living it king-size. We feel we are still dating. We keep doing small things for each other like planning surprise holidays and parties. We respect each other's views. Though I am a woman, Ram values my opinion greatly.
Are you considering taking up another show?
No. I want to be available for my family. Also, I don't want to jeopardise, the show that has fallen in my lap.
