Chapter 3

"But Dadi, this isn't the one I wanted to wear tonight! This is my wedding and I'm not going to compromise on anything." Aaliya's shouting had gathered the family to her room where clothes thrown onto every surface imaginable. The bride-to-be had been given the wrong jewelry set, resulting in a classic Aaliya tantrum.

"Don't worry beta, we'll have the other set brought over tomorrow. You can wear it to the other functions." Dadi sat down next to her granddaughter, attempting to console her. The sangeet was tonight and the entire family was already busy with their own preparations.

"It's my wedding Dadi, but no one seems to be worried about my needs. So what if it's too late. Shouldn't I be given anything I want right now?"

Dadi looked helplessly at Aaliya, not knowing how to refuse her request given that this was the most important occasion of her life but also unable to see how she would meet this demand.

"Dadi, why don't I go to jewelers?" Pragya stepped forward, not wanting any more tension in the house. Everyone was already worried how the pre-wedding ceremonies would proceed after the mess of an engagement they all witnessed.

Aaliya narrowed her eyes at Pragya. She probably wanted to ruin the set or have it go missing, ruining my wedding. This bhanji couldn't be trusted.

Dadi looked up at her bahu, for the hundredth time thanking God that she had been given such a wonderful daughter-in-law. "Pragya, you have plenty on your plate already. You can't do everything in such a small amount of time and the guests are about to arrive. You're not even ready yourself"

"Oh I'm sure she can make time Dadi. I mean it is her sister-in-law's wedding. Everything should be perfect, right wifey?" Abhi walked into the room, coyly smiling at Pragya who was again astonished at his horrible timing.

Let's see how the great daughter-in-law reacts to this. It must be killing her to have to prepare for her lover's wedding. Abhi wanted to know see much this was hurting her, how far she would take her act.

"Abhi is right Dadi. This is my responsibility. I'll head to the mall right now and don't worry. Everything will be fine" Pragya smiled reassuringly at Dadi, making her way out of Aaliya's room and on her way to the jewelers.

Dadi smiled at her bahu while her two grandchildren glanced at each other, wondering what Pragya's plan was.

"Thank you uncle. I'm sorry we called you on such short notice." Pragya picked up the box containing the stubborn bride's jewelry. Thanking the jeweler for the fifth time, she began to walk outside the mall towards the car Dadi had insisted she take.

It was already getting dark and she knew she would barely have enough time before the sangeet started to get ready. But when she looked up, she saw that the car wasn't there, nor was the driver anywhere to be seen. Pragya glanced around worriedly. How was she going to get home on time now? She quickly pulled out her cell phone and called home.

"Hello, Dadi? I have the set but the driver seems to have gone somewhere. I don't-"

"Oh sorry Pragya." Aaliya's voice came over the line. "The thing is that Tanu needed someone to pick her up for the sangeet, so I told the driver to go pick her up. Why don't you take a rickshaw home or something"

"But Aaliya, how I am supposed to find one at this time and quickly enough" But the call had already been cut. Frustrated, Pragya looked around hoping to find a ride home as soon as she could.

She spotted a rickshaw stopped across the road and quickly made her way towards it. A horn sounded from her right and she looked to the side to see two bright headlights making their way towards her.
