Part 11
"Yesterday I had told your Mother that we will come to meet her. We should go." Arnav said to Khushi, who came out of the bathroom and again sat on the bed, drawing her knees close to her chest.
She remained quiet.
"Khushi, we should go to meet your mother" He again tried.
"I don't want to meet anyone." Came her reply in a soft voice and she laid herself on the bed.
Arnav let out an angry sigh at her aloofness and stubbornness.
"I will ask your mother to come here then" he said. And again getting no reply, he removed his cell to do the said.
Garima entered the room to see the familiar scene of Khushi lying on the bed, only difference was the room and the bed. She moved near the bed and sat beside Khushi.
"Khushi.." she called her in her tender voice.
Khushi opened her eyes to look at her Amma.
"Are you ok, Khushi?" she asked.
Khushi nodded.
There were many things she wanted to ask. She wanted to ask why she married. She wanted to console her. She wanted to tell her not to be afraid, she is there to protect her. But like everytime, she failed. She has failed as a mother. She has failed to protect her only child.
Garima turned to look at the door as she heard the knock.
Arnav entered the room with a tray.
"Breakfast..." Arnav kept on the table.
Garima got up and taking the tray she again sat beside Khushi.
"Khushi eat something.." But she got no movement from her. "For the baby, Khushi.." Garima said through her choked throat. This is the only reason she eats nowadays. And she was not disappointed this time too. She saw Khushi pushing herself in the sitting position. She kept the tray in front of Khushi and started feeding her.
Garima looked at Arnav sitting on the sofa. Khushi ate her breakfast and giving her the meds and putting her to sleep, she came out to see him sitting in the living area. She moved towards him.
Arnav was staring blankly at the laptop screen when he saw a file being kept in front of him. He lifted his head to look at Khushi's mother.
"What is this?" Arnav asked looking at the file.
Getting no reply in return, he took the file in his hand.
"Medical history?" Arnav's confused gaze lifted at her.
"Yes. Medical history. Khushi's medical history." Garima sat in front of him. "She ... Khushi was always like that. Coy, shy, less talkative... I can't blame her for being like this. When I left my jobless and drunkard husband's house, I thought I can take care of my daughter. But I was wrong. I didn't knew that all my fights with my husband will affect my child to this extent. My husband thought I was cheating him, roaming around with other men. And daily we use to have fights. A fight which Khushi was forced to see, be a solo witness to. I... I wanted to protect her, protect her innocent mind from everyday's fight. So one day I left him, I left my husband. But I was late, the damage was already done. Due to my job I was unable to spend much time with her. And she, she became more and more reserved. She was afraid of making friends. She .. .. she was afraid of ... afraid of fights. She is afraid of fights. And she thought, keeping away from people is the only solution to avoid fights. If she will not make friends, she will not meet people, and hence, there will be no fights. I never scold her..." Garima's eyes brimmed with tears as one memory flooded her mind. "At her ninth birthday, I wanted to arrange a party for her. I thought of inviting children from her school, so that she can make some friends and enjoy her birthday like every normal kid does. But she refused, and I was so angry at her that I ended up scolding her badly." The tears choked her throat. But she continued. "That was the first time she had the panic attack... She can't take fights, scolding. She gets hysteric. "
"But after college I noticed some changes in her..." Garima looked at Arnav. "I think that was the time she met you. She use to smile, talk with me... she had started living for the first time. She, for the first time was living the feeling of being wanted, being loved, being accepted and she was loving it. I am her mother, I can give her a mother's love. But I think that was not enough. Your love was changing her, changing for good. But one day when she came home, ... she was more broken than before. I will not blame you for that... ...I think you were just being a... man? "
"I ... I don't know what you have told her. But whatever it was, it had broken her completely. So much that I didn't knew what to do to mend my child's heart. She use to get up in the middle of the night, withering, screaming. I was worried. I was very worried for her. Sometimes I thought of meeting you, she had told me your name. But then seeing the condition of my daughter, I stopped, I didn't wanted more heartbreak for her. I consulted a Doctor, and all they told me is, something has affected her very badly. Khushi wasn't telling them anything. But the Doctor said there is something which even her subconscious mind in not allowing to let go. It keeps hovering in her subconscious mind which results in the form of nightmare. "
"Then one day Rudra came. He was an orphan. There was an orphanage nearby my house. He told he had seen Khushi many times when he use to live in the orphanage. He told he loves Khushi and wants to marry her. I didn't knew what to reply him, so I told him to meet Khushi and ask her. I don't know what they talked, how he convinced her but after a week, he came and said Khushi is ready for the marriage. I was happy, I was so happy for my child. She was trying to take a step towards happiness. And they got married." Rudra was keeping her happy, he understood her, he... he trusted her... He trusted her" Garima repeated. "I think he was the only man in her life whom she saw trusting a woman, whereas both the man she had in her life had failed to do that. Rudra trusted her and she was ready to give him everything for the trust he gave her. " Garima looked down at her joined hands as tear cascaded down her cheek. "But that happiness was also snatched away... Rudra died ... And with him, my daughter's all happiness. She again became the girl I had seen before Rudra came in her life. She might have died.. My daughter would have died but her child stopped her from throwing herself in that darkness. Her child is the only thread holding her to this world." Garima stood up and joined her hands.
"Just one request. Don't hurt the baby. Don't hurt Khushi. If something happens to the baby then there will be nothing left in her life. She is living, breathing, eating, drinking just because she has her child. She thinks if she will not obey you, you will harm the baby. Please don't do that. She thinks Rudra died because you wanted her back. I know it's not like that but please try to understand her and please don't shout at her. I saw the mark of injection on her hand, she had the panic attack yesterday." She wasn't asking, she knew that. "But please don't stress her more, she is pregnant, she needs to rest, not any kind of stress. I don't want her to live here, but I know forcing her will do no good. So all I can do is request you to not hurt the baby and Khushi..."
Arnav just sat still, his blood red eyes looking at her. A painful weight settled around his heart, refusing to go and he doubts it will ever fade. His one misunderstanding has made her go through all these. He is solely responsible for everything. For her every pain, for her every hurt. He bowed his head and shut his eyes close. Why? Why he did all that? Why he was so blinded by his rage that he didn't allowed her to explain herself? What a mess he has done of his life.
He got up from the sofa and looked at Garima.
"I... I will never hurt Khushi, I promise you. And ...I...I am sorry for everything... I am sorry ... I will take care of Khushi and ... and Rudra's baby ... I promise ..."
Garima nodded her head and wiped her tears.
"I will leave now ... I will visit tomorrow ..."
Arnav nodded at her.
Arnav entered the room to see Khushi lying on the bed, her eyes staring blankly at nothing. He moved towards the bed and stood beside her.
"Khushi, see I brought a new guitar. Yellow, your favorite color." Arnav smiled.
Khushi turned her head to look at the guitar but kept quiet, not replying anything.
"You like when I sing for you, don't you?" Arnav sat beside her. "And I had heard that music is good for the baby too..." and he saw her hand instantly move to her belly. Swallowing the hurt, he looked in her eyes. "So I think I should sing for you and the baby, what do you think?" Arnav asked, but got no reply. "I take that as a yes then.." and he got up from the bed and took the guitar.
"Any song you want me to sing?" Arnav hoped against hope that she will reply, but she didn't. "Ok then, I will choose one..." He said and went and sat on the recliner, positioning the guitar in his hand.

Getting up from there, he went and stood on the recliner and opened his arms.

"Wah wah Arnav Singh Raizada! Very good. Entertaining your wife and forgetting to receive your one and only sister in the entire universe." Anjali stood near the door, her both the hands on her hip.
"Shit!!" Arnav jumped off the recliner. "Di?!"
"Thank God you still remember I am your Di. Seeing your fabulous performance I thought you have become a rockstar and I highly doubted you will remember your Di."
"I am sorry Di. I really forgot" Arnav apologized.
"Of-course of-course why will you remember your sister when you have a beautiful wife.." she leaned to her left to look at the figure lying on the bed and smiled at her. Pushing her brother aside, she moved inside.
"Hey Mammu!" a small hand lifted to wave at him.
Arnav rolled his eye and closed the door.
Anjali turned to glare at him.
"Open the door. NOW!"
Arnav, with a sigh, opened the door to see that tiny thing glaring at him, very much similar to his mother.
"I take my hey back." Stomping one foot, he ran inside the room.
"As if I was dying for your hey. Keep it safe with you.." Arnav closed the door and walked back to the bed.
"Hi, I am Anjali, Arnav's sister." Anjali, with her usual warm smile, sat in front of Khushi.
"Namaste. I...I am Khushi.." Khushi replied, not knowing what else to do.
"Khushi? That's a beautiful name."
"And I am Aryan.." Aryan extended his hand.
Khushi took his tiny hand in hers and nodded her head in acknowledgment.
"He is my son.." Anjali said.
Aryan climbed on the bed and sat beside Khushi.
"So Mammu married you?" Aryan asked.
Khushi nodded her head.
He lifted his hand and touched Khushi's cheek.
"You know you look like the doll Riya has." Aryan looked at her amazed, meaning his every word.
Khushi's lips, for the first time in last few months, broke into a smile.
Arnav saw the smile blooming on her lips and a small happiness tussled inside his heart.
"Who's Riya?" Khushi asked.
"Riya is an annoying girl in playschool, who always play with a doll, whose name is Maria." Aryan replied.
Anjali looked at Khushi. She was wearing a light blue saree, her hair in a messy bun. She was beautiful but also... so thin, weak... the dark patches under her eyes very much visible. She was looking nothing like a newlywed bride. Anjali looked at Arnav, who was staring at Khushi. She got up from the bed and moved towards her brother.
"Arnav, you wanted to talk something, right?" Anjali asked.
Arnav nodded his head and taking her hand, he moved towards the poolside.
"So, what is that you want to tell me?"
"Di...I...I want ... I just want you to take care of Khushi.." Arnav said, hesitantly.
"She is not well?" Anjali asked, concerned.
"No..I mean she is not well but that's not the only reason..." Arnav searched for words to narrate his story.
"Can you tell me what is the problem, Arnav?" Anjali asked irritated by her brother.
"Di..." Arnav sighed and closed his eyes. "Khushi... Khushi is pregnant..." Arnav opened his eyes to look at her shocked face.
"What?!! You married yesterday and now you are telling you are going to be a father?"
Arnav gritted his teeth and turned away from her.
"I am not going to be father.."
Anjali clutched her head and sat on the chair.
"What are you telling, Chhote? Can't you be little less complex?"
"Khushi is pregnant but the baby is not mine! Is this clear enough for you"
Anjali stood up, stumped by his confession.
"Arnav what are you telling? The baby is not yours? Then why did you marry her? Whose baby it is?"
"I married her because I love her. And the baby ... baby is Rudra's ... her ... Her dead husband ..."
Anjali closed her eyes to digest all the things.
"Ok... So the baby is her first husband's, who is dead. And you fell in love with her, so you married her?"
"I loved her even before she married. I loved her when she was married and I love her now when she is married to me."
Anjali stared at him, thunderstruck.
"I...I don't understand you... Or better I don't want to understand you. You love her?" Anjali asked.
"Yes." Arnav answered before waiting for a second.
"You love the baby?" Anjali asked.
Arnav stared at his sister for few seconds before averting his eyes.
And Anjali got her answer.
"If you love Khushi then you HAVE to love the baby, Arnav. If you don't love the baby then you had no right to marry her. You should have not married" There was noway she was going to allow him to do this.
"Di, I ... I care for the baby .. because Khushi loves him but ... I... I... I can't love the baby.."
Anjali walked towards him.
"See Chhote, I can understand but if you love Khushi then I don't think it will be difficult to love the baby."
Arnav turned away from her. Now how do he explain her? The baby is the constant reminder of his every mistake, a mistake which is making it difficult to pave a way to happiness. He just can't put himself to love the baby.
"Di, please don't force me .."
Anjali stared at his back before nodding her head noticing the helpless tone in his voice.
Arnav walked inside the room to see Khushi sleeping and Aryan caressing her hair.
"Mammu, her eyes were dropping and then she slept.." Aryan informed.
"That's because of the med." Arnav replied.
Aryan stood on the bed and he lost his balance, and was about to fall on Khushi but Arnav dashed forward and stopped his fall.
"You idiot! Can't you be careful? You might have hurt the baby " Picking him up, he kept Aryan on the floor.
Anjali looked the scene and leaned on the door, a smile playing on her lips. Only care? If this his care then the love which always keeps lurking from behind care will not take longer to come along.
