Chapter Nineteen

Randhir remembered the day that Sanyukta left him four years ago, after their last exam. He started to explain to her how he and Vidhushi came to be friends.

--

He was sitting on the grounds of FITE, his head in his hands, sobbing uncontrollably, when he felt a warm hand on his shoulder.

"Vidhushi?" he asked, surprised, when he looked up.

She wasn't looking at him, but Randhir could see that her face was sullen. He wiped his own tears and stared at her. She still didn't look at him.

"Sanyukta left you didn't she?" she said calmly.

Randhir felt himself get angry.

"Vidhushi get lost!"

He got up and was about to walk away, when he heard her voice crack.

"Parth... he broke my heart too Randhir," she expressed.

Randhir turned around and walked back to Vidhushi, noticing her eyes fill with tears.

He sat down beside her, concerned - not because he considered her his friend, but because he truly felt bad... he knew the pain of a broken heart, and the pain was still a fresh wound for him.

"I'm sorry Randhir," she gasped, fresh tears falling out of her eyes. "I lied to you that day I told you that Parth and Sanyukta were close. I hated him. I wanted to make his life miserable and I thought you would help me."

Randhir felt his heart break once again at her condition. He was never fond of Vidhushi, but seeing her heartbroken really affected him.

"It's okay," he said flatly. "Anyways, I didn't believe you."

"I know," she whispered. "I feel really bad."

"What did Parth do?" Randhir asked her curiously.

He never liked Parth either, but he sure had liked him a lot better than Vidhushi.

"He kissed me and then told me he thought I was Arpita the next second," Vidhushi said bitterly. "Is that even possible? Then he started hurting himself and told me to get away from him as if I forced him to kiss me."

Randhir felt his hand ball into a fist, suddenly feeling protective for Vidhushi.

"Don't worry, you will find better," he told Vidhushi positively.

"So will you Randhir," Vidhushi said, smiling at him.

I can never find better than Sanyukta was all he thought before he got up and walked away.
--

"It was from that day that we became friends," he explained. "Soon, I told her that my job posting was in Mumbai and she said hers was here too. We started to hang out more and more, and we became really close friends Sanyukta."

--

A year later, they were both hanging out at a park, when Randhir noticed Parth out of the corner of his eye.

"Vidhushi, let's go that way," he said, pointing towards the other direction, not wanting her to see him.

She nodded, and was about to turn around and follow Randhir's lead, when she noticed Parth and her eyes glistened with tears. Parth noticed them too and walked up to them.

"Hey, long time no see," he said with a wide smile directed towards both of them. "It's a small world, we're meeting at Mumbai eh?"

Vidhushi said nothing.

"Parth, go away," Randhir told him coldly. "We don't want to speak to you."

Parth looked at Vidhushi, then Randhir, and then back at Vidhushi again, before a look of understanding settled on his face.

"I know you're mad at me about what happened between us, but Vidhushi I am truly sorry," he told her, apologetically.

"You don't look sorry, you cheap bas***d," Randhir spat out at him while Vidhushi stiffened next to him.

"Why are you involved?" Parth said darkly at him. "I can sort this out with Vidhushi myself. Look Vidhushi, can we give our friendship another chance?"

Vidhushi was about to speak when Randhir gripped her wrist tightly, causing her to close her mouth.

"She's my girlfriend, don't you dare say a word to her," Randhir told Parth venomously.

Vidhushi looked up at him, a shocked expression on her face, but she didn't say a word.

"Alright then," Parth said, looking shocked and upset. "Well... you have my number, it hasn't changed - if you want to speak to me that is."

Then he turned around and left.

"Randhir, what was that?" Vidhushi hissed, her eyes bulging. "Why did you tell him I was your girlfriend?"

"So that pig wouldn't get it in his head that he might have a chance with you."

--

"Neither of us took it seriously Sanyukta," he explained.

She held his hand tightly and smiled at him.

"This morning as soon as I woke up, I went to her house..."

--

"Vidhushi, Sanyukta is back," Randhir told her softly, unsure of what she would say. "She's living in my house."

"What?" Vidhushi asked, her mouth dropping open. "No way!"

Randhir nodded.

"She... she wants to get back with me... but I'm scared," he whispered. "I want her back too Vidhushi, I really do. I love her so much."

Vidhushi shook her head.

"No way Randhir, you're not going to get back with her. Remember what you told me about Parth? He'll just break me again?" Vidhushi told him.

"But Vidhushi, what if she means it?"

She sighed.

"Randhir, do you trust her? You yourself came here to tell me that you're afraid she'll go away from your life?" Vidhushi asked. "Listen Randhir, I'm telling you as a friend."

"Then what do I do? Vidhushi, I can't control myself around her. I love her too much!" he yelled, his eyes filling with tears. "I don't know if she'll leave me or not, I sure as hell know I won't be able to live if she leaves me again, and me leading her on like this is only hurting her!"

She placed her hand on his arm.

"Randhir. I know it's hard. You don't want to lead her on either when you yourself are unsure if you want to move your relationship with her forward," she said.

"Thanks Vidhushi... I am just really confused right now. Thanks for being there for me," he told her with a smile.

"Anytime Randhir," she said, smiling back at him. "What are best friends for?"

Randhir then left and drove back home, contemplating his options.

--

"Then I came back home and you know what happened," Randhir explained to her. "When I told you I was seeing someone, I was referring to Vidhushi."

He sighed.

"Sanyukta, I... was scared. I hated myself. I told you I loved you, I slept with you, and here I was still confused about whether I wanted to be with you. It wasn't fair," he told her sadly. "I didn't want my insecurities to get in the way of your life. You were already doing too much for me."

She placed a hand on his cheek and kissed it softly.

"Tonight, when I returned to Vidhushi's house..."

--

"I need a drink," he said, allowing himself into her house.

She poured him a glass of whiskey and handed it to him. He downed it all at once. He was crying.

"Did she say something?" Vidhushi asked him protectively.

"I'm a monster Vidhushi," Randhir said, his heart aching. "I lead her on. She's so hurt. When I told her I was seeing someone, the look on her face... I just wanted to die!"

"What?" Vidhushi exclaimed, her eyes widening. "Who are you seeing Randhir?"

"You."

"Are you crazy?" she yelled.

"This is why I'm a monster," he said, tears streaming down his face. "Vidhushi, this is why."

"Why the hell did you tell her that?" she screamed.

He wiped his tears and faced her angrily.

"You don't understand what I'm going through Vidhushi!" he yelled. "I feel guilty as hell already for leading her on. You know why I told her this? I was testing her. Dammit, I was testing her to see if she leaves. But you know what - if she leaves me this time, I won't resent her. Look at me! I'm a bloody wreck!"

He noticed her own eyes tear up and he immediately regretted his words.

"I'm sorry," he said, looking down, feeling more guilty.

"It's okay Randhir," she whispered, falling down to her knees in front of him. "I need to tell you something."

Randhir looked at her curiously.

"I... I spoke to Parth," she admitted. "And we're kind of seeing each other."

"But Vidhushi you told me this morning itself to not trust Sanyukta," Randhir said calmly.

"I saw him this afternoon," she admitted. "Randhir, we all make mistakes. Sanyukta made her mistakes, you made yours... just like that Parth and I made our mistakes too. And Randhir, it's been years, maybe things have changed!"

"But Vidhushi," Randhir said urgently, "I won't be able to take it if she leaves me again."

"Neither will I," she admitted softly. "But Randhir, don't you think it's better to try than to not try at all?"

He nodded.

"Randhir, if she leaves you this time, then it isn't her fault. I wouldn't blame her. You probably broke her heart by leading her on and then telling her that you're seeing someone else - she might be under the impression that you cheated on her. Don't base your choice off her decision."

Randhir nodded again.

"What will you do if Parth leaves you?" he asked her softly.

"Then I'll remember to come to you first thing, because you know me and understand me better than anyone else," she admitted. "Besides, when you know that you have someone there who will take care of you every step of the way, there is no need to worry."

Randhir smiled at her, but inwardly, he was crying. He put Sanyukta through hell today.

--

"That's it," he told her. "Sanyukta, you're... you're truly one of a kind. Any normal girl would have left my side, and I wouldn't have blamed them, but you still stayed with me, you still supported me."

Looking into her eyes, he noticed that she was crying.

"Randhir I told you I will never leave you," she said, sniffling. "But that wasn't fair."

"I'm sorry," he whispered, a pained expression taking over his features once again.

"No," she said, covering his mouth with her hand. "Don't apologize. I told you, forget the past."

Then a devilish smile took over her features.

"But I swear Randhir, if you play these games with me again, the result won't be good."

"Oh yeah?" he asked her, smirking. "What will you do to me?"

She leaned closer to him and he felt his heart beat faster, his palms sweat, and his whole body warm up.

"I won't waste anymore time Randhir," she whispered, crawling onto his lap.

His arms held her back firmly as she picked up a pillow and hit him hard with it.

"Ouch, what was that for?" he asked, whimpering.

She started to giggle, falling back on the bed, her back hitting the mattress. "Your punishment Randhir," she told him through fits of laughter.

"Oh yeah?" he asked, raising his eyebrow, leaning over her body.

He pressed his lips on her forehead and grabbed her arms, pinning them on the bed.

"You think you can get away with this Miss Sanyukta Agarwal," he asked.

"Naw, I know," she said, giggling.

He pressed his lips against hers roughly.

"Mmm," she said against his lips, unable to move her arms because they were pinned to her sides. "You're planning to torture me Mr. Shekhawat?"

"Little by little," he murmured, his lips making their way to her jawline.

He finally released her arms and she wrapped her arms around his neck, turning the both of them around on the bed. She was on top of him, her head on top of his chest, hearing his heartbeat.

"Sanyukta," he said, stroking her hair.

"Hmmm?" she asked, peacefully.

"I don't like your name."

"What?" she asked, affronted.

She pulled herself off him and glared at him, but he was holding her tightly against him, refusing to let her go.

"Sanyukta Agarwal? I like Sanyukta Randhir Singh Shekhawat better. What do you think?" he asked her with a smirk.

He saw a blush creep up her cheeks and it made him smile.

"Are you proposing to me?" she asked him faintly.

"You can take it that way," he said, chuckling.

She held him tightly and smiled.

"I like the way it sounds," she whispered shyly.

"Are you saying yes to me?" he questioned, rubbing her back softly.

"You can take it that way," she replied, laughing nervously.

Then she rested her head on his chest again, and they both fell asleep, more peacefully than they had in a long time.

--
Mystery solved! Now you know why Randhir said Vidhushi was the person who he was seeing, and you guys can stop being mean to poor Vidhushi who's actually very innocent. 😆 The next chapter is the last one. *Sigh* I know, I know, I feel so sad already, but the story has lived its life. There is no reason to pointlessly drag it.

Do leave your feedback, I love to read it!
