Part 1:
Divya scrambled out of the car and hurried behind her boss who was already ascending the staircase leading up to Walia Industries. Fumbling with the appointment diary she caught up and listed his meetings today only to be interrupted as he signalled towards her distractedly.
"Cancel my two o'clock."
Divya looked at him aghast as they entered the building.
"But sir; Mr. Mehta is one of our most important contractors and…"
"I know why he wants this meeting and I'm not interested in a partnership. Besides; I have more important things to focus on right now."
She opened her mouth to convince him otherwise though soon snapped it shut as he turned round and gently held her arm.
"You look tired; take a break and meet me at 10:00"
The abrupt order surprised her and she wondered what had suddenly got into her boss.
"The meeting…"
He brushed her confused glance away.
"I'd rather go on my own that deal with my PA fainting in front of twenty guests."
He flashed a quick smile and left her to sink gratefully in to one of the soft chairs lined opposite the reception desk. Relieved, she stretched her legs and absentmindedly remembered how proud she had been to bag the job of personal assistant to one of Mumbai's biggest business tycoon's – Jai Walia.
Despite having worked for six months under him; however; she realized she was yet to understand the way he worked. He would cancel meetings on a whim and retire to his cabin for the rest of the day; working diligently on a project; never resting until all aims were achieved.
He put in 100% and expected the same; if not more; from all of his employees – ready to snap at them if even a single mistake arouse. At other times he was warm and shared an easy camaraderie with everyone; from the peon to the head managers. She could recall a number of occasions when he had pulled her leg mercilessly as she fumbled around his cabin.
He was definitely one of kind.
That thought brought a smile to her lips as Divya tilted her head slightly; admiring the view of his retreating back as he strode across the corridor and turned the corner out of sight.
Though that didn't do justice to what she had seen when he turned towards her barely a minute ago; for Jai Walia – along with being filthy rich with a charming personality and a booming business – had the looks of a Greek God.
He was devastatingly handsome and had unwillingly found himself to be the hot topic of discussion of every female worker who ventured into the cafeteria.
There was something about him – his rugged good looks; his set jaw; his chocolate coloured eyes that any woman would happily drown in; the way he sat, spoke, and lived in confidence – something that would have gone well with aristocracy.
She had mustered enough courage one day and asked if he was the lost prince of a far away country by any chance?
"No; but if this report isn't finished and on my desk in two hours, then I won't hesitate in having you beheaded"
He had replied dryly – to busy to acknowledge her dreamy eyes as she stole secret glances.
Even now Jai Walia was unaware of the looks his PA had been giving him; along with the admiring glances of the younger female employees who greeted him with enthusiasm before breaking in to giggles behind his back as he acknowledged them with a simple nod.
His mind was solely on the several meetings; one after another; barely allowing him time to breathe in solitude; especially as his 12 o'clock meeting included Roshni who would not allow him a minute's peace at lunch.
To immersed in his thoughts – as well as being more than used to employees parting to make way for him – Jai failed to notice the woman stepping out of a nearby cabin and waiting patiently in the middle of the corridor.
The result – he collided into her; taking her completely by surprise and causing her to fall as her bag flew open and hurled out its content.
"Are you blind?"
Barked Jai distractedly before he noticed her fumbling hurriedly in an attempt to gather her belongings. Sighing, he stooped down and collected everything before shoving them roughly in to her hands. As he did he caught a quick glance of her dark hair falling delicately over her shoulders as her head tilted higher and her honey coloured eyes stood out – watching him vacantly.
He left after helping her up, though the image he had managed to capture in those few seconds remained with him until he forced it away and turned his attention to Tarun – his childhood companion and lawyer – who was informing him of yet another legal problem.

Jai leaned back in his chair and drummed his fingers impatiently against his desk. The laptop was taking to damn long to load up and he was already in a foul mood thanks to Ms. Chopra who simply did not understand the concept of keeping her personal life separate from her professional.
Her proposition had been simple – dinner with her or he would lose out on her votes for the upcoming board meeting. Despite his curt response she had stubbornly insisted on staying to 'work' and he could only be thankful for Divya who had barged in and steered her out of the office. Despite that his mood had done little to improve and he found his patience running thin as the laptop seemed to freeze – fixed on the windows logo.
He cursed loudly and it finally hummed back to life allowing him to enter and immediately pull up the reports he required. Typing away furiously he barely acknowledged the knock at his door and replied with a hurried,
"Come in"
Not once taking his eyes away from the screen.
"Jai!"
A tall slim man entered his cabin; clad in a grey suit and donning a warm smile that made it difficult to fathom his exact age.
"What do you want Aditya?"
Replied Jai in a bored tone; his eyes still firmly glued to the screen as Aditya laughed – to used to Jai's moods to think anything of it. Instead his smile grew wider and he pushed down the screen of the laptop; earning an irritated glance from his friend.
"I'm sure you can afford to give me a few minutes; I want you to meet someone"
It was then that Jai spotted the woman (no – girl; she looked barely 18) hovering in the doorway. One look at her eyes and he recognised her as the one he had bumped in to earlier. Her eyes were just as beautiful; just as vacant; though now she was not crouching on the floor he could assess her appearance better.
She was elegantly plain, he summarised.
Her hair fell casually down her back and she was dressed in a simple off white kameez with a colourful pink stole positioned on one shoulder. She was devoid of any jewellery other than a few white bangles in one wrist and small ganesh locket dangling on a thin silver chain.
But her features stuck out. High cheekbones in soft pink, a small button nose and rose coloured lips that only accentuated her beauty.
"Jai, this is Nishikant Dxit's daughter – Bani."
The girl – Bani – smiled softly and put her hands together in a traditional greeting.
He nodded back; silently comparing her to her father.
Yes; he remember Nishikant well. The polite and confident man he had met in Mt. Abu a number of years ago. After he had helped Jai in a tricky situation; they had both kept in touch regularly and Jai had grew to admire him – like the father figure his own dad never was.
Bani was nothing like him and Jai guessed that she must have taken after her mother.
Surprisingly Nishikant rarely talked about his family and Jai only knew about one daughter – Pooja; or was it Priya? He couldn't remember. She had married a few months ago though Jai had been unable to tend to the wedding due to Biji's deteriorating health. Nishikant had asked him to cancel the wedding plans and take care of Aditya's mother instead – reluctantly accepting the few gifts Jai had sent over.
He realized guiltily that they had not talked since.
"How is Nishikant?"
He asked Bani whose smile seemed to falter. He had to strain his ears to hear what she was saying as her voice was low and soft.
"He passed away a few months ago"
The news hit him like a tonne of bricks and he darted a glance towards Aditya who nodded regretfully. Another rush of guilt – stronger than last time and he lapsed into silence; rekindling memories of the old man who he had looked to for advise in the last ten years.
Aditya noted Jai's distant look and walked over to Bani who was still standing there; her head bowed.
"Bani; take a seat."
Aditya held her elbow and started guiding her to Jai's desk though she smiled and brushed him of.
"I can manage."
She replied with a smile; covering any emotions of sorrow like she had learnt to do years ago.
Her voice; again low and soft; jerked Jai out of his thoughts and he watched as she took a few steps forward and bumped into his desk. Her hand reached out to steady herself and fell on a couple of files placed on the edge; almost causing them to slip though she managed to grab them just in time.
No damage was done but Jai – already facing one of the worst days in his life – felt his anger rising to the surface.
"Damn it, can't you watch we're you're going - are you blind?"
He snapped at her heatedly; ignoring Aditya who was hovering nervously behind her.
"Urh, Jai…"
He began; only to be cut of by Bani who smiled in his direction.
"That's the second time you've asked me that and as a matter of fact; I am."
