Karan Johar became a huge name as a director in India (and of course overseas as well) on strength of his several Blockbuster and Hit films with Shah Rukh Khan. KUCH KUCH HOTA HAIN, KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHAM, KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA, MY NAME IS KHAN...
that's a 100% success track record!
Then, all of a sudden, Karan Johar decided to change tracks. He decided to launch three newcomers in a film called STUDENT OF THE YEAR in 2012. Not only did the film become a Hit, but so did the stars of the film!
Since (and including) STUDENT OF THE YEAR, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Siddarth Malhotra have had a combined total of 6 releases, and not even one of those films was an outright flop! So far so good for these 3 young stars!
Just 2 weeks after the release of Siddarth Malhotra's EK VILLAIN (which has been declared a Super Hit), the other 2 students (Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt) are all set to come back on-screen with HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA this Friday.
Both Varun and Alia are on a roll. Alia's last film 2 STATES was a 100 crore Super Hit film, and Varun's MAIN TERA HERO also did well at the box office and had many coining him to be the next Govinda and the new flavour of the masses amongst the young breed of stars. The fact that the two stars are on a roll, the Dharma Productions banner (KJo-Varun-Alia are re-uniting after SOTY), the popular music of the film (especially the Saturday song), the entertaining youthful appeal, the title of the film which reminds the public of a film that enjoys tremendous recall value (DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE)...all these factors bring huge excitement for many for the arrival of HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA.
With all these factors, I feel that the film will be a hit!
Siddarth Shukla is going to be another factor to watch out for. Many seem to appreciating him in the promos and that could also work in favor of the film as well.
The film also has references to Blockbuster films like DDLJ (through it's similar title and Babuji wala climax scene) and YJHD (mehndi phone scene between Varun and Alia in Samjhawan song promo) and I think these scenes in HSKD will be liked by the audience.
The film's opening will be strong, for all the factors mentioned above. Opening will be best at the multiplexes of big cities and metros. Single screen audience and audience in smaller centres will come as well due to the hit songs (Saturday song especially) and because of Varun's growing fan base amongst the masses after the success of MAIN TERA HERO. The youth will come in hordes on the opening day of the film as the film holds great appeal for the youth and it is this section of the audience that drives much of the business on a film's Friday opening day.
Much like the celebratory mood of the song in the film, "Saturday" will be a day for the makers to be happy about the film's collections as well because more of the family audience will also start to come (especially during evening/night shows). Sunday will see the film have solid collections as well with even more families coming.
After the opening weekend, I feel that the film will sustain well as I feel the youth will like the film and they will give the film a good lifetime total. Release period is a bit of a problem for the film because two weeks after the release of this film, KICK will arrive in theatres and will unfortunately "kick" this film out of many theatres. But, I feel that HSKD will enjoy a good two week run at least at the box office. Some may feel that Ramadan period will dent collections of HSKD, but I don't think that will happen because a film with a strong buzz and strong WOM will work at all costs.
If the film had a better release date, such as Post-IPL 2014 (first week of June), I strongly feel the film could've been the YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI (which was also a Dharma film) of 2014 in terms of getting huge box office success and would've potentially been a Blockbuster, especially when including the factor that Alia and Varun are coming from two successful films (2 STATES and MAIN TERA HERO).
But the film will still do well nonetheless with it's not-so-great release period.
My Box Office Predictions for HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA:
Opening Day: 10 crores net
Opening Weekend: 35 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 70+ crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Hit
I would also like to mention here that Alia Bhatt is currently my second favourite actress along with Katrina Kaif. Alia won me over with her strong performances in HIGHWAY and 2 STATES and her good looks!
