I find Indian Idol's Javed Akhtar the scariest judge amongst all the judges in the television singing competitions. And you might be surprised to hear that. Akhtar is usually calm and polite with the contestants, guffaws a bit on the odd occasion, and uses only a few words to express himself. When you compare him to loud mouth abusers like Abhijeet, Anu Malik and Himesh Reshammiya, the famed lyricist comes across as a kindly soul. So then why does he intimidate me so? It's because of his deathly silences and highly unnerving expressions. The sudden tweak of eyebrows, the half-frowns, the blank stares, the dead cold eyes… one never has an idea of what's really going on in that mysterious mind of his. And if a thick-skinned couch potato like me can feel the tension, just imagine the impact on the young participants who come in from small towns of India, to face the music on national television. I think in his own way, Javedbhai is passing on some lessons in tehzeeb to the rest of the boorish judges. You can create great drama without having to resort to street-side antics.
