One Friday, three mega launches

Friday is that one day of the week which is synonymous with movie premieres. And now even our television industry is not far behind. Take today's Friday the 18th for instance when not one, not two but three mega budget and much talked about shows hit the airwaves - Sahara One's Biggest Loser Jeetega (9.30 pm), Star Plus' Star Voice Of India (10pm) and Star One's The Great Indian Laughter Challenge 3 (9pm).

Interestingly this trio falls in the 'reality genre' which means there is competition to grab eyeballs not only within themselves but also from the other existing shows falling in the same time bracket. We are talking about Sony's Indian Idol (9pm) and Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge 2007 (10pm). So henceforth weekends will witness a 'real' reality race on the TRP chart!!!

Here's a lowdown on the three new entrants who are all set to woo the TV audience from today.

Sahara One's Biggest Loser Jeetega : To be aired every Fri-Sun at 9.30 pm, this reality show will showcase the lives of 16 obese contestants over 16 weeks and their journey to fitness, complete with drama and emotions. The show is directed by Arun Sheshkumar and hosted by the fabulously fit actor Sunil Shetty. As per the format 16 overweight contestants from all walks of life are grouped in two teams of 8 each, competing to knock off the inches and shed kilos under the expert guidance of fitness trainers and nutritionists. The one who loses the most weight among the final three is crowned 'The Biggest Loser' who will walk away with the grand prize.

Star Plus' Star Voice Of India : Conceptualized by TV's man of music, Gajendrra Siingh, this musical reality show makes its debut on Star Plus. The versatile, talented and hugely popular voice of melody, Shaan, will be the host and Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Aadesh Shrivastava, Jatin & Lalit Pandit will form the esteemed panel of judges. To be telecast every Fri-Sat at 10 pm, Amul SVOI is produced by Saibaba Telefilms. Gajendrra Siingh, the creator of some of the biggest music based shows on television, will also direct the show.

Star One's The Great Indian Laugter Challenge 3 :
The new series to be aired every Fri-Sat at 9 pm and will see loads of fresh comic talent with wit and characteristic humour! Biggest Loser Jeetega? Yes

Bandra-based restauranter Rahul Kanal, who weighs 104 kg, tells MiD DAY why he feels the reality show will succeed

By: Kiran Tare

The challenge is not just difficult, it's impossible! But we still want to see what happens

'Impossible', is the word that came to my mind when I heard the anchor, Suniel Shetty, declare that the challenge for the contestants on the Biggest Loser Jeetega show, which launched on Sahara One yesterday, was to lose 60 kg in three months.
I consider myself obese (104 kg with a height of 5ft 9 inches at the age of 21). Obviously, I was eagerly awaiting this show since I saw the promos.
I could immedeately relate with two of the contestants — the DJ and the child artiste — who confessed of late nights and junk food. Having played Hanuman in the television serial Jai Hanuman produced by Sanjay Khan), I know television artistes spend a lot of time on the sets doing nothing and eating junk food.
As a hotelier, I spend most of the time on the cash tables of my hotel.
In spite of advice from neumerous relatives and friends, I have lost very little weight. Even advice from my sister — a dietician — could not make me lose more than six kgs in three months. Sahara One's challenge is not just difficult, it's impossible. Yet, I think the show will be popular because, everyone longs for a dream figure.

(As told to Kiran Tare)

Actor Suniel Shetty has taken a six-month break to host the show 'Biggest Loser Jeetega'. According to Suniel Shetty, he has taken the right decision to make a transition from film to television through this show.

Let's hear from him more about his decision and the show. Though I (Suniel) have been receiving offers by the dozens for quite some time to make my transition from film to television, no other show motivated me to take the plunge. With "Biggest loser Jeetega", I am taking my first step towards the small screen albeit as an anchor.

I'm doing this show because I'm passionate about health and fitness. The show will tell people what fitness is all about. If I wasn't a part of this show, I would be jealous because this is the only reality show I would ever want to be in.

Though I came in as an anchor to drive the show. I fell in love with all the sixteen candidates who have started calling me 'anna' (elder brother). We have an awesome bunch of candidates. All the time they are smiling and very cheerful. Though today not all the 16 may be known, after the show is over, all of them, whether they win the prize money or not, will end up as celebrities.

The show will teach everyone, whether it is the participant or the viewer how to overcome the problem of obesity and make life meaningful. We hope the format that has successfully attracted millions of viewers over multiple seasons in other countries will change television viewing in India too, creating a revolution in health and fitness.

The participants will be trained under the best in the fitness industry, like former physiotherapist of the Indian Cricket team Andrew Leipus, & Yusuf .I. Khan & Deepika, trainer to stars like Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu. If we can motivate even 1% in our country to give attention to fitness, our purpose would be served. The show, let me reiterate, is not just about losing one's weight but developing an entirely different personality.

Gracious being rushed to the hospital
Performing strenuous tasks is not easy, especially when you weigh 115 kilograms. Gracious D'Costa, one of the participants in Sahara One's Biggest Loser Jeetega was hospitalised when he injured himself while jumping over a wall in the show.

The obese participants of the show are supposed to perform a lot of activities in order to lose excess weight. They have to frequently go trekking, swimming, and also do a lot of exercises and yoga in the gym. Apart from that, the participants also have to take part in some games which involves a lot of physical activity. The team which loses the game is punished accordingly.

The members of the Red team and the Blue team were supposed to jump over a high wall. Gracious D'costa, member of the Red team, agreed to let his team members jump over the wall by climbing on his back for the much-needed support. Once all the participants jumped over the wall with Gracious's help, it was finally his chance to jump over the wall.

Kalyan Sundaram, programming head of Sahara One, says, "It was tough for Gracious because he had to jump over without anyone's help. He was already very weak after every one had stepped on his back to jump over the wall. As soon as Gracious tried to jump over the wall, he toppled over and fell on the ground. He closed his eyes and was gasping for breath. He was immediately taken to the hospital. The rival team had a great laugh on seeing Gracious's condition."

Thirty- one- year old Gracious came for the Biggest Loser Jeetega auditions as he wanted to make his wife happy by losing the extra pounds. According to eye witnesses, he is a fun-loving participant and has been having a tough time controlling his temptations.

"It's very obvious that the obese participants will face a lot of difficulties in this tough game of weight loss. We have resident doctors and a hospital in Amby Valley, just to make sure that the participants do not face any difficulties," adds Sundaram.

But, aren't these tasks dangerous for the obese participants? "We have done a lot of research and the games are all chosen to make the show interesting for the viewers. There can be minor injuries, but they are definitely safe for the participants," says Kalyan.

Ek moti si love story

Ranjib Mazumder

Muna Aleem

Love and lust sure comes in all shapes and sizes! The participants of reality show Biggest Loser Jeetega are witnessing love in the times of losing weight. The contestants on the show -- Muna Aleem and Gracious D'Costa --- were recently caught getting intimate when the latter sneaked into Muna's bed at midnight. Gracious, who joined the competition only to make his wife happy by losing weight, seems to have conveniently forgotten her. Gracious and Muna has been getting cosy without caring for onlookers around.

Gracious D'Costa

The Biggest Loser Jeetega house has separate arrangements for the male and female participants. Although the male participants do go to the women's side, they do so just for casual conversations. Muna has been unwell as she is having a tough time trying to lose her excess weight. Gracious seems to be too worried about Muna's ill health. So much so that Gracious sneaked into the women's bedroom to sleep with Muna despite other female participants being uncomfortable with his frequent visits.

Says a source from the production house, "Gracious is often at the women's room to ask Muna's roommates to look after her. There have been instances where Muna's roommates were not comfortable with Gracious barging in. Another day, Muna's roommate and co-contestant Sharmila Joshi was extremely unhappy to see Gracious around and asked him to leave. But, the next day, Gracious was seen in the women's room at midnight and both of them were in Muna's bed under one blanket."

31-year-old Gracious (who weighs 113 kilograms) and 25-year-old Muna (who weighs 96.4 kilograms) are from the Red team. Previously, they have been seen together and are known for always performing tasks together. Fellow contestants tell us that the two seem to be sharing much more than team spirit.
