10 visual similarities between 'Mardaani' and Hollywood film 'Taken'

Deccan Chronicle | Karen Pereira | June 25, 2014, 20.06 pm IST
Mumbai:The much-awaited trailer of Rani Mukerji's 'Mardaani' is finally out. The actress is seen in a completely different avatar.
Rani plays the role of Shivani Shivaji Roy, an astute cop working in a Mumbai Crime Branch unit.
Her search for a missing teenage girl, Shivani stumbles into the world of debauchery, cruel desires and exploitation and onto a case that will change her life forever.
The cop finds her way through the depraved world of child trafficking by picking up hidden clues and fearlessly confronting hardened criminals.
The 2-minute trailer features Rani like you've never seen before. The actress who is back from a two-year break plays the role of a tough cop rather convincingly.
It was reported that the film takes inspiration from true-life stories of women abducted and sold in our country. After watching the trailer over and over again, we think it was a little more than those real life stories' that inspired director Pradeep Sarkar to come out with this.
After a little research on films based on women trafficking, we found striking similarities between Rani's Mardaani' and 2008 Hollywood movie Taken' staring Liam Neeson.
Even though we just got a glimpse of only the Mardaani' trailer, we found not one but TEN scenes that were common between the two movies. Although the story line may differ these scenes certainly did not!
We start with the first shot of Rani in the trailer where she comes from behind and shoots a man in the head. Taken' also has a similar shooting scene where Liam Neeson shoot one of the men involved in the abduction of his daughter.

After the man falls down dead, you get a full look at Rani's Face.

Notice how only THREE locations are highlighted on a map in this scene just like the THREE locations circled on the map in Taken'. Coincidence?

Even the method of abduction is also very similar in both movies.

Is it just us or is this scene the exact same thing, other than the phones being flipped. Both actors are also in a home setting wearing black coloured clothes. Even the dialogues are similar.
Rani can be heard saying "Aaj mujhe yeh toh nahi pata ki tu kaun hai, kaha se baat kar raha hai. Par 30 din me pakdungi tujhe, yaad rakhna. 30 din."

While Liam says very sternly, "I don't know who you are, I don't know what you want ... If you leave my daughter now, That will be the end of it. But if you don't, then I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you."

Even the bad guys look similar. The stubble and the half lit face.

The rape scene in the Mardaani' trailer is a little hard to watch, but even that has a resemblance to the one from Taken', where the girl is left lying on a bed with a bed sheet covering her modesty.

While Liam Neeson shows the bad guy a photo of his daughter, Rani begs to differ and shows not one but two photos of the abducted girl.

While looking for clues, both movies show the cops digging through wallets that they find on tables. Guess that must be standard procedures.

And lastly, this window scene. Only difference is, Mardaani' shows the cop looking out the window and talking, while in Taken' the victim is in a similar scene, though in different situations.

Take a look at the movie trailers and you can judge for yourself.

Tell me this is not real 🤣
Female talking on phone in Taken
Female talking on phone in Mardaani

Similarity!

Opening wallet, similarity!

Shooting someone with a revolver, similarity!

I refuse to believe how a reputed daily like DC allowed this to be published. 😕

I love Taken, one of my favourite movies. Hoping Mardaani will be equally good.

The storyline is somewhat similar to Taken, one could judge it by watching the trailers. But the writer doesn't make sense 😆 like talking on the phone, looking out the window, showing three locations..😆 Maybe once the movie releases, we could find similarities..but for now, this is exaggerating.
