Many of Bollywood's much loved playback singers seem to have surprisingly disappeared into the shadows

GAURAV DUBEY

IT IS difficult to have a conversation about ' 90s Bollywood music without mentioning songs such as Tujhe dekha toh yeh jaana sanam, sung by Kumar Sanu, and Pehla Nasha, sung by Udit Narayan. Sanu and Narayan belonged to a breed of playback singers who made ' 90s music what it was: a bag of melodies that sent their respective film's box office collections soaring.

Which brings us to the question: where have these singers gone now? One reason behind their disappearance is the fact that today's music directors prefer working with a new bunch of singers culled from various talent shows.

Not only do these youngsters charge lower fees but their voices can also be worked upon using a slew of audio softwares.

hitlist catches up with these singers to give you the lowdown on what's keeping them busy now...

Aside from Lata Mangeshkar, who has ruled the longest on the music front?

No doubt!...Lata Mangeshkar is a benchmark for every other female playback singer but here this article is about the singers who have made their mark in 90's :)

I think Asha and Lata have ruled the longest. Maybe Rafi and Kishore would have ruled too had they not died early.
I think 90s singers were given harsh treatment. They were phased out in early 2000s itself! It was unfair.
It is good they have different opportunities to keep going now. Or else in past, artistes used to live in penury once work dried up.

I know, I was just asking a question. And since I'm not an expert in music, I figured I ask. 😆

I love the 90s music. That era was something else.

90's no doubt given us greats voices like kumar, udit , sonu , anuradha, kavita , alka, sadhna , SPB ...but there is one thing to which i dont consider 90's a great era for music score because in 90's 90% percent of songs were plagiarized from either old Pakistani songs mostly they have lifted tunes from Pakistani Music ...and from other languages there are plenty of videos on it ...who have exposed all music directors ...when it come to 90's hit songs from aashiue songs of kumar sanu to udit's aisa zakhm deya hai jo na phir bharega to Mann and Isqh songs of amir khan to dheere dheere se mere zindagi main ana to kumar sanu songs from Phir teri kahani yaad aye ...to kuch kuch hota hai songs to sajan songs ( bhout pyar karte hain etc) all were copied there wasnt any orginality in music directors like Nadeem Shravan , Anu Malik like today we have pritam a copy cat back then these all big name in music direction were just copy cat :D ...the best era should be undoubtly of Naushad sahab and Rafi sahab mean 60's :)
