Rani Mukerji's Mardaani directed by Pradeep Sarkar is the story of a senior inspector who sets out to uncover the mastermind behind the child trafficking mafia. Rani plays the role of Shivani Shivaji Roy who traces the kidnapping of a teenage girl, who is like a daughter to her.

The plot of Mardaani bears strong resemblance to the 2005 American TV mini-series titled Human Trafficking. Starring Mira Sorvino and Donald Sutherland in the lead roles the show Human Trafficking. It's about an American immigration and customs enforcement agent going undercover to stop an organisation from trafficking people. The show follows the stories of three trafficked women.

The promo of Mardaani which shows Rani's hunting the trafficking mafia is similar to Sorvino and Sutherland's effort to find the criminals and give justice to the victims.

The official synopsis of Mardaani mentions, "Fighting a war which is very personal and in an obsessive hunt for the girl, Shivani stumbles into the world of debauchery, cruel desires and exploitation and onto a case that will change her life forever. What follows is a cat and mouse game between a fearless cop and a young and ruthless mafia kingpin."
