Impact! Yes, you make an impact in the lives of the ordinary people, you become an icon. You influence them in one form or the other, you become an icon...

If a Bollywood stars teaches a child to pursue his/her dreams, s/he's an icon. If a star shows the common man the ways of living life peacefully, s/he's an icon.

Me thinks!

Someone who has made meaningful impact, across demographics, be it through their movies, their philanthropy, their achievements... At the end of the day, if a lot of people are inspired by xyz, and say "I want to be like xyz".. That xyz is an icon IMO.

Govinda, SRK, Aamir, Sridevi, Aishwarya, Madhuri are the icons I can think of at the top of my head.

It's far away from becoming a legend. But if you're an icon you may very well become a legend if you can continue to do well.
