My first attempt at a pictorial review. I picked up one of my fav movies KRK's Desh Drohi. Even if you haven't seen this movie, you will understand the story and everything in this review. So this review is for those who have and haven't seen the movie. Hope you like it.
You know the makers have put in extra effort to make this movie when they cant even get their opening credits to be spelled right.
The movie begins with a malnourished man running away from something. At first guess, it seems like people want to beat him for wearing this horribly looking bell bottom jeans because we are not in 1960s anymore.
The malnourished man catches some train which stops at Mumbai. The Director shows us the famous chruchgate station. After all how will we know this is Mumbai if they cant show some famous landmark.
That malnourished man wanders while eating peanuts and come near some Paan Stall where two youngsters are buying drugs. Usually if someone buys drugs they are very secretive about it. But not this couple. They are giggling so loud while mentioning drugs that even a policeman nearby could hear. Nice way to show how Mumbai has gone to the dogs.
But director thinks he has not convinced us enough how much crime is there in Mumbai. A random gang is introduced demanding money from poor shopkeepers. But not to worry our hero is right here. He will obviously save the day.
But wait, it looks like some girl who is coming to save the day. For some reason better known to her, she decides to jump her bike on some vegetable stall inspite of the road wide empty for her.
I think I have seen her before. To be honest I had to google star cast of deshdrohi to find out who she is. Oh my my, she is gracy singh who has worked with Aamir Khan and sanjay dutt in blockbusters. You know your career is on rise when you work with KRK after working with some of the biggest superstars in India.
So after a fight sequence involving gracy singh which tries to rip off movies like matrix, star wars, etc, she alone beats 10 other goons while our hero just stands there watching whats going on. Gracy drops her handkerchief by mistake and our hero picks it up. Wow so original. The last time we saw such a scene we were in 1970s.
I just realised something, we are 15mins into the movie and yet we don't the name of our hero in the movie. Looks like director is trying to pull a Fight Club with Edward Norton here. Anyways after a dull song sequence we see one of the most pointless scene every shot in a movie. The scene shows our hero eating vada pav, then asking for water. I mean why are we shown all this? So shopkeeper claims our hero hasn't given the money for vada pav but hero claims otherwise. Shopkeeper starts to beat him but kader khan comes too help the hero.
So finally we get some information about our hero, but no name yet. We come to know that our hero has come to Mumbai to visit his friend best shekhar who is very rich. However, he doesnt know where he is or what his mobile number is. Totally believable. Why would your best friend tell you his mobile number and where he lives in Mumbai. But fear not, we have Kader Khan who randomly tells him to go to an area called jogeshwari and try his luck.
So our hero goes to take a bus towards jogeshwari. But wait, how is he wearing new clothes? If he bought new clothes then what happened to his old ones? As he ran immediately from somewhere to catch the train, I doubt he would have too much money on him. Is this all happening on the same day? Instead of explaining us, the director shows a cycle and hero goes into flashback.
*In flashback* We see somewhat a pretty girl. From the background it looks like a village. Usually movies show two cars colliding, two helicopters colliding, very rarely two motorbikes colliding, but our director decided to take this to a new level. He showed us two cycles colliding.
*In flashback* After 5mins of their stupid conversation, we finally learn the hero is called Raja. About time. Apparently that pretty girl has crush on Raja and she tries to flirt with him. Some more pointless 5mins later Raja goes to meet his friend Shekhar who is very rich and just returned to village for a short time.
*In flashback* So shekhar tells Raja that real money is in Mumbai. He further goes to tell him that there is Money only in Mumbai and nowhere else in the world. Wait, so you are telling me all these cities like London, New York has no money? Totally believable. Then shekhar starts to boast how rich he is, how much cars he has and what not. Whats the point of all this you ask? I am wondering the exact same thing.
*In flashback* Director knows no movie is complete without an item song. So Raja says that he and shekhar will party tonight. And we see a girl in a navel revealing dress because that whats every Indian wants dancing on one of the worst songs ever written. Looks like Shekhar has shaved his beard off for this party.
But no, Shekhar's beard is back. Man this guy got some super powers. Superman you are nothing.
So Raja, reaches home drunk and his grandfather is awake. Apparently his grandfather wants Raja to become a policeman.
But wait, so you are telling me. This 40yo Raja has been living with his grandfather since birth and his grandfather wanted raja to become a policeman ever since he was born but never mentioned it before today? I mean why wouldnt it be a right time at midnight when his grandson is drunk to tell him all this? What was this grandfather doing when Raja went to college and stuff? What was he doing when Raja was trying to figure out what to do with his life? The director decides to not mention these minor details, instead we get a emotional family scene
So we are back into present. Raja hails the bus to go to jogeshwari. However, he doesn't have Rs.10 change for the ticket. So being the kind man he is, he offers Rs. 90 tip to the conductor. Now in real world the conductor would be happy and thank him or politely return his money. But in KRK's world, the conductor abuses him and throws him out of the bus.
How does this all make ay sense?
I just took an IQ test and my IQ has already fallen by 20points. Still I will continue to watch this movie.
So we are 35mins into the movie, we have hardly any idea what is happening. We don't know what story this is? Is it a love story, a movie about how an old man can get a job as policeman or a journey about finding a friend. Lets continue.
So after being thrown form the bus, our lead actress gracy arrives. Raja gives back her handkerchief and to say thank you, she offers him a ride to jogeshwari.
So Raja finally arrives to Jogeshwari. He asks 2 people where Shekhar is. Because there is only one shekhar in the whole world. Conveniently, Raja spots shekhar a second later. But wait, Shekhar is no rich man. He is a mere security guard. A twist in the tale. The movie just got interesting.
Shekhar tell Raja how hard it is to make a living in Mumbai. He tells him that there is no money in Mumbai. Wait, isn't this the same friend who told Raja that if there is money in any place in the world, its in Mumbai. Friend of the year. Why don't I have friend as cool as Shekhar.
Shekhar offers Raja a job as Security. I don't know what powers he has to do such a thing but apparently we aren't supposed to ask any questions. Raja tells him he wants to fulfil his grandpa's dream of becoming a cop so he cant work as a security guard. So if he wants nothing to do with Mumbai, then why did he come to Mumbai in the first place?
*In Flashback* we are back to flashback. Gradpa has died and Raja's father wants him to work as a farmer. He tells raja to get some flour from somewhere to plant crops. I have no idea how can he plant crops with flour. Anyways, Raja gets the flour but meets with another cycle accident with that pretty lady. Somehow flour is spilled and Raja's father does what every father would do to punish their child i.e. give him a merciless beating.
So thats why he runs away from home. Who needs Villian when our father is the biggest villain.
Back to present, Raja comes back to kader khan who runs a fruit stall. Kader Khan offers him a job in his fruit stall. Raja accepts it. So 2mins back when his friend offered him a job he rejects but when Kader Khan offers him he accepts. Nothing makes sense so far so why would this scene?
Kader Khan leaves raja alone to run the shop. Please note that Raja has not received any training on how to handle this business. He doesn't know anything about the prices. Yet for some reason he is handling the fruit stall. And if this wasn't stupid enough, Kader Khan just trusted a man who has come from some village, is poor, in problem and who he met only 2hours ago. Seems totally real. Soon raja will find out that running a food stall is not all fun and games. A random gang approaches him and demand that he will now sell drugs with fruits. Why? Even I don't know.
Raja refuses to sell drugs so the goons starts to beat him.
But fear not, our gracy is here to save the day. But I still don't understand what kind of movie is this? Hero is getting beaten and actress is saving him. Is it a women centric film? What is happening? So after gracy hits few goons, she is captured and held at gun point. Our hero begs like a school girl to bystanders and ask them to save her. No one is ready to help. Hero thinks its time to take matter in his own hands and start beating the goons. Finally
During the gun fight, raja kills the leader of the gang by mistake.
After killing the goon by mistake, Raja cries like a little school girl. He says now I can never become a cop. Yes raja, you were very much on the track of becoming a cop. This is what will stop you.
Gracy explains to Raja that its not his fault and everything will be alright. She says she will take the murder on her own hands and confess that she has killed the goon. Why? Because thats what you do for a person you met 3hours ago.
Well so lets recap. In the morning, Raja got beaten by his father and ran away from home. He came to Mumbai. He saw how Mumbai has gone to dogs and how much crime there is. He gets beaten up by shopkeeper, bus conductor, some goons. He also finds out his friend has lied to him. Then he secures a job in a fruit stall. He gets involved into a drug racket and kills a goon. He also finds love of his life. And its still not dark. Man this Raja leads some fast kickass life.
Now suddenly scene changes. We are introduced to some politician. The guy raja killed was this politician's brother. So he calls some encounter specialist and gives him 12hours to find and kill Raja.
Again the scene changes and we are introduced to another random character. This loser is supposed to be Gracy's brother. Also Gracy tells that she is only alive because she loves her brother and does everything for him. Clearly the brother is in late 20s. Don't you think its time to come out of the shadow of your sister and make your own life?
After this scene, some unknown person calls Gracy and tells her that politician is after their life. So they run.
Apparently they run till its dark and stop only for a second. In that second the encounter specialist finds them. So what was the point of running?
So finally after 5mins of some stupid talk, encounter specialist fires the gun. But Gracy's brother comes in between to protect Raja. Why? because why won't you sacrifice your life for your sister's friend who she met 4hours ago.
So a character is introduced 2mins before. He is given no dialogues, shown as a loser and we are supposed to feel sorry for him when he gets killed. oscar winning direction.
Raja gets angry and kills the encounter specialist. Immediately some more cops come. There is no vehicle shown so I am assuming they came here by using some harry potter magic. Raja kills them as well. This guy Raja is a killing machine.
if you recollect, 5mins ago Gracy said that her brother is everything for her. She loves him so much that not even a tear is shed and the body is left there itself. Raja and Gracy continue to run.
So we are 1hour into this movie. We have no idea where the plot is heading to. We have no idea what kind of movie is this? Is this a love story? Is this a revenge story? Is this about how a common man becomes a don? Is this about what has happened to Mumbai?
So they run to Gracy's aunt. Well why would a politician look at their relatives place? Its perfect place to hide. Also we will drink tea and make jokes while completely ignoring the fact that my brother died few minutes ago.
and if this wasn't enough, they break into song and dance immediately. I mean if confessing your love immediately after your brother dies is not the right time, then when is it?
So after the song sequence, we find out a new policeman has been given the duty to capture Raja and Gracy alive by the police department. New policeman promises that he will capture them within 48hours. Meanwhile Raja and Gracy see their wanted photos on TV. They are very surprised. I mean you just killed 5cops and you are surprised that the police department is looking for you? Why?
So Gracy takes Raja to meet a guy called Problem Shooter. Problem shooter says he knew they would come to him for help. How does Gracy know a gangster? We aren't told. How does the gangster knows Gracy? We aren't told. And Raja seems to be very fine with all this. I mean tomorrow if I find out that my GF knows some underworld don, I will be totally cool with it.
Problem solver takes Raja and Gracy to that politician who we find out is called Rajan. He promises that he will solve the problems and if Raja asks for forgiveness then Rajan will let him go. But when they reach there, they find out problem shooter has cheated them. Actually Rajan and problem shooters are now working together.
Gracy gets angry and starts venting that she knew all the time that problem solver cannot be trusted. She says she knew that he would rat them out.
Wait a minute now. So if Gracy knew all this time that her life is in danger and problem shooter will hand them to Rajan from whom they were running, then why did she take Raja to problem shooter? I mean ...sorry I don't even know what to say here.
Rajan wants to kill Raja but problem shooter has a better idea. They think it would be best to send Raja to kill a big politician called Sanjay. I mean it totally makes sense to hand such a big assassination contract to an armature killer instead of so many hitmen employed by their gang. Raja agrees and they say they would keep Gracy as security until Raja kills Sanjay. Raja walks into sanjay's office with a gun like someone would walk into a park. After all why won't Sanjay being such a big politician have security.
So Raja is about to kill Sanjay, but not before a pep talk. Sanjay wants to know the reason why Raja wants to kill him. Raja tells him his story. Sanjay convinces raja that Rajan is a bad guy and raja should trust Sanjay. So Sanjay asks Raja to go to Rajan and lie to him that he has killed Sanjay. But in reality Sanjay will be alive. Why? because why won't you help an assassin killer?
So Raja shoots bullets in the air and Rajan associates think that Raja has killed Sanjay. Rajan is very happy and tell them to kill Raja. However Raja hides behind the tree and kills the associates of Rajan. Rajan now wants to kill Gracy so he goes to her room to find out that she escaped. How did she escape? The old fashioned way.
So Gracy is running and even Raja is on a run, somehow they meet somewhere. If this was hard to digest, Sanjay also meets them and offers them a lift. Why? Because why won't you help an assassin killer?
Now Rajan has found out that Raja has lied to him and also killed his associates. He decides to hire the most badass hitman in the world kaalia.
We find out that Kalia is none other than
What? Really? Well...Okay. A twist that even Christopher Nolan won't be able to think of. Seriously who is writing this crap?
Shekhar is little shocked to find out that he has to kill his friend Raja. But after a small pep talk by Rajan shekhar is all ready to kill Raja. Raja is told that shekhar has been hired to kill him but Raja is not ready to accept this. So when shekhar points the gun, Raja thinks its a joke and is all smily and giggly
But Shekhar is all business and no games. So he shoots Raja. Now KRK may not have the budget to accommodate slow motion in the film, so for our viewing pleasure, he dies in slow motion. Seriously guys, you have to see this scene with audio to believe it.
So after killing Raja, Shekhar does what every cool hitman in the world would do. Casually walk off. However, Shekhar is not that lucky. He yes kidnapped. Seriously, how many twists and turns are there in this film? Abbas Mastaan, are you watching?
Camera is back at Raja. We find out that raja is alive. Surprise Surprise. Gracy tries to stop the passing cars for help but no cars stop. So she takes a handcart and wheel raja away to the nearest hospital. Lets not forget that Shekhar was billed as the worlds best hitman few minutes ago, yet he wasn't able to kill someone while shooting at point blank range. Totally justified.
So Raja is all up and running in matter of 14hours. He goes to Sanjay and Sanjay tries to manipulate Raja. Why? We may or may not find out soon.
After all we find out. Sanjay wants Raja to kill the current deputy CM. Raja is either a person of high caliber or extremely unlucky because wherever he goes, someone wants him to kill someone.
Raja find out that deputy CM is watching KIM Sharma's item number in some hotel. So he literally walks with a gun passing all the cops to get inside the hotel. Seriously guys, I am not making this stuff up. Look at the picture.
Apparently this guy is a deputy CM. Seriously? I mean didn't they get some decent old man to play deputy CM's role? Who is the casting director of this movie?
So after killing deputy cm, Raja escapes. How? Well director didn't wanted to bother us with minor details. So we are shown a pointless call between CM and "D". This has nothing to do with the plot or movie.Why is it shown then? Who know
So D tells CM that Raja needs to be captured. Why is D worried about a small killer like Raja? Who knows? anyways, another random politician is introduced "mathur" who says that if you make me deputy CM I will bring Raja to you. But wait, what is Rajan doing here? Doesn't matter. Before the CM speaks, Sanjay arrives and says he knows where Raja is and will handover him if they make him deputy CM. Man this Sanjay guy is my new hero.
The 4 politicians in the room crack some deal amongst themselves and become friends. Sanjay tells them that Raja has been hiding in a farmhouse of some big bollywood actor. How did Raja get access to the farmhouse? Once again minor details are not important. Raja finds out from next days newspaper that Sanjay and Mathur have become friends. He says he can see true colours of Sanjay now.
So what we are told is that, the whole deal between the 4 politicians was made only on the condition that Raja would be killed. They all know where he is hiding. But for some reason only better known to them, they decided to wait till morning before going and killing him. Is it only me who is trying to find out some logic here?
Remember a guy who was kidnapped many scenes ago? Shekhar? Well it was Sanjay's men who kidnapped him. Now Sanjay tells Shekhar to go and kill Raja. I mean this guy clearly showed how incompetent he is the last time. So instead of hiring a better hitman, i will ask a guy who is Raja's friend and who I kidnapped him to kill the man who sits between me and my dream of becoming deputy CM. Totally believable.
After Shekhar leaves, Sanjay calls problem solver and tells him to kill Shekhar after Shekhar kills Raja. What is this Sanjay guy upto?
But Shekhar listens to Sanjay's evil plan.
But Sanjay is not done here. He calls mathur and asks him to call the new inspector and kill problem solver after problem solver kills Shekhar. I mean this is really too much now. Why risk calling an inspector when you yourself can send a hitman from your gang. I mean if inspector catches Problem Solver alive then everything is back to you. How does this all makes sense?
Also we are not given any reason as to why Sanjay wants to kill Shekhar and problem solver.
Shekhar goes to Raja and asks for forgiveness. He tells him that because he wanted to become rich he became a killer.
So they hugg it out. I mean man. This guy Raja has some big heart.
Problem solver comes and saves us from the gay scene. Instead of shooting both of them, he thinks its best to talk for 5mins. Raja, Gracy and Shekhar starts fighting and finally Raja kills problem solver. I told you, raja is a killing machine.
The new policeman, Rohit comes to the murder scene to find problem solver killed. He knows raja killed him. So he somehow finds Gracy lurking around a car. He asks her where Raja is. Instead of looking around, he takes Gracy to police station because he is sure Raja will surrender himself. I mean this cop has no idea that Raja and Gracy are couple. He is just forming assumptions. He didn't even bother to check the car if Raja is hiding there or not. Cop of the year.
Raja calls Rohit and tells him to release Gracy. I mean if thats not how you get prisoners out of the jail then how would you? by going to court?
For some reason, Raja has this brilliant idea that if they kill Rohit then Gracy would be released. So they go to a mall to kill Rohit. Both Rohit and Raja are not even 50m apart, but rohit fails to see them. Cop of the year like I said. Raja draws the gun in front of the whole public but no one bats an eye. Shoppers casually keeps shopping. I mean seeing gun in a shopping mall i so common these days. Finally they have a 2 on 1 shoot out at parking lot. The shoot out continues for good 5-10mins but no one hears whats going on. Totally legit. Also the best hitman in the world Shekhar once again fails to even hit one bullet at rohit. Finally they capture rohit and have him in point blank range.
Suddenly a girl casually walks in. She sees two gunman pointing gun at rohit. So instead of using her brains and calling for help, she just runs towards rohit and hugs him. That girl is no one else but same pretty girl who had crush on Raja. Now she is married to rohit.
So Raja spares rohits life and just walks away. Rohit's heart changes and he decides to send Gracy back. I mean f**k protocol, f**k police formalities, f**k the system.
Also looks like Gracy had a new hair-do inside the prison cell.
Moving on, Shekhar tricks rajah saying that he will hand him Raja. When Rajan comes, he is beaten by both of them. As Raja is about to shoot rajan, shekhar says he wants to fight Rajan one more time. I mean I have already given up trying to draw sense from their actions. So I will just accept it that this is how it happens in real world.
But if anything movies has taught us, if villain is not killed when its a chance to kill him, then he will kill someone. So Rajan somehow acquires a gun and shoots at Raja. Shekhar covers Raja and takes the hit and die...also in slow motion.
Raja promises Shekhar that he will kill every single one of these politicians. So first he kills Rajan
Then he kills mathur. Because thats how easy it is to kill a high level politician.
This is the truck from where Raja kills mathur. There are about 20policemen in the scene but not one chased the slow moving truck. Instead they run towards mathur and asks him "mathur sir, kya hua". Even a 4th standard kid can tell you that Mathur sir is dead.
Moving on, today is 15th August. Sanjay announces a curfew in the whole city because he is afraid Raja will try to kill him. Yet he goes to deliver speech. Why? Because logic bitch.
But whats this, Raja comes from some underground somewhere. Right in front of Sanjay. No idea who gave him the boost.
Instead of shooting him, which is what the doctor ordered. The policeman casually points the gun towards Raja. .
But Raja is not stupid man. He has a plan
Raja tells that he will blow everybody if Sanjay doesn't confesses his crime. Sanjay being a pussy what he is, confesses everything.
Not a single policeman shoots from behind while raja is doing all this because real men shoot from front only. Police force of the year.
After confession, Raja beats Sanjay. Then tells them that this is not a real bomb but some toy. Inspite of this, police are not moving an inch. Also whats the needs to tell this now?
While Raja continues beating Sanjay, Sanjay asks for help from police but police is not ready to do anything. Meanwhile everything is being recorded. Totally makes sense.
Finally after beating him for 10odd minutes, Raja shoots Sanjay. So if he wanted to shoot him all long, what was the point of beating him?
Rohit says thanks to Raja and salutes him. I mean wait. Lets rewind a bit. Raja probably has killed more than 10innocent policeman. Rohit knows this. Raja killed many other high politicians and no one really knows if they are actually corrupt. Still instead of being arrested, Raja is being worshipped.
All reporters are clapping because f**k the system. This is how justice will happen from now on.
Movie ends, but instead of showing The End, hey show The Beginning with it being spelled wrong. I mean seriously how can you make this mistake? Is it even possible?
Man, this movie was something. All I have to say is
