Flashback
With the drowsiness still heavy on her senses, Geet slowly opened her eyes and looked at the ceiling above. A sudden wave of memories from the previous day washed over her, jolting her out of the effect of the sedatives. As she looked around the room when she felt a warm breath over her hand. Looking down she saw Maan sleeping near the bed with his head resting on the edge of the bed, his hand close to where hers was resting. Geet sat upright thinking if she was dreaming and none of it was true. As the effect of the sedatives wore off, things became more clearer. His words rang in her ear, brining her back to the harsh reality. His one truth had shaken her world of dreams; it all came shattering down within seconds. A sob escaped her lips while tears streamed down her eyes clouding her vision. Wrapping her arms around her knees, Geet sobbed into her hands trying to subside the pain that gripped her heart. The sound of her muffled sobs reached his ears and he staggered out of his sleep and looked in her direction to find her sobbing. Maan immediately got up and kneeled beside her, trying to pry her hands off her face. She looked up at him with tears in her hazels.
Geet, please listen to me once.! Maan said in a painful voice. Though she didn't move but her tears became even more prominent as she heard his voice. Saying nothing Geet got off the bed and was about to walk away when he held her hand.
Not today Geet, please don't walk away. Do something, anything.! Talk to me, shout at me, slap me, punish be but do something. I can understand it's not easy for you but I can't take your silence anymore. Don't walk away from me Geet. At least listen to me once.! Maan pleaded, making Geet weaker. Heavy sobs rocked her chest, whist controlling her sobs, she tried freeing her hand out of his grip but he held her closer.
Geet, please don't cry. Don't do this yourself, give me one chance to explain myself. I didn't mean to cheat you ever Geet, I know I was too late in telling you the truth Geet, but I was bound by a promise. I couldn't tell you, but the moment I realized my love for you, I decided I will tell you the truth. I can't live with the burden anymore. I never thought this day would come because I never thought that my heart would betray me and I would fall in love. Before telling you how much I love you, I told the biggest truth of my life, because I didn't want to cheat you. Please Geet, listen to me. Maan pleaded holding her hand in his. Geet looked at him painfully and snatched her hand out of his.
You didn't want to cheat me.? What have you done till today Maan.? By hiding this from me, you have only cheated me all this time. I am..am...married to the person who..killed..my..father. Geet said getting off the bed and going away when Maan held her hand.
Geet no. I never cheated you. I was bound by a promise Geet, I just couldn't tell you. I.. Maan said but she cut him off.
And what about the promises you made to me.? All the promises you made to me when you married me.?? All those meant nothing to you? You broke all those promises you made to me for that one promise you made to hide the truth from me.? You kept me in the dark all along and just in one second, with one truth, you shattered my world. If I think now, what do I know about you.? Nothing at all.! I have never known anything about your life and neither did I know how you are responsible for my life being ruined. Why did you hide everything from me Maan.? I didn't even have the choice to mourn, all I have left now is my broken heart which only knows how to love you. What was my fault in all this.? Everyone has cheated me. Geet broke down with tears streaming down her eyes. She yanked her hand out of his grip.
Geet, I know I have hurt you a lot. Please give me one chance to explain myself, none of this was easy for me either. Maan said trying to go near her but stopped looking at her hand which was raised in his direction, stopping him. Maan looked at her with pain and took back the steps he had taken towards her.
I don't want to be anywhere near you. Let me go Maan. She said in a firm tone. His eyes closed in pain, but her words were clear, she didn't want to be near him.
Please Geet, once.. He said once again but in vain
Leave me alone, I don't want to talk about this. Geet said wiping her tears away and walked away leaving him in tears. The bitterness in her voice towards him made him weaker. The thought of losing her once again haunted his soul and broke his heart. Daadimaa who was at the entrance and heard everything placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Give her sometime Maan. The more you try going near her, the more she will go away. It will only hurt her. It's true that she was kept in dark and it's natural she will feel cheated. It's not easy to cope up with such a big truth in just one day, it will take time for her to come out of this. Bte, I am not asking you to leave her, but don't push her into this, let her come out of it. It might take time, but she will. Daadimaa said painfully as she saw tears clouding his eyes.
It won't erase her pain but it will at least not hurt her more. Daadimaa said wiping his tears.
How can I leave her alone in this.? She is in this pain because of me.. Maan said looking towards the door which she just left though..
Maan, try to understand her pain too beta. She is your wife and she just learnt such a big truth. It's obvious that she will feel cheated that you hid such a big truth from her. Moreover, she is married to you, the reason responsible for her father's death. It's not easy to accept such a big truth so easily. She is not alone, I will be there with her. I will take care of her, but you take care of yourself. I know you are worried for her, but you need to give her sometime Maan. Daadimaa said and left patting his cheek. Maan sat on the edge of the bed thinking about Daadimaa's words. Time was what Geet needed but her silence and lifelessness was killing him inside out. If time was what Geet needed, he would give it to her no matter how much he would suffer meanwhile but all he wanted was to talk to her, tell her the truth.
Maan stood behind the wall and painfully looked at her sitting on the bed, staring at something. Her eyes were swollen, her face pale with all the pain she had endured in the past one week. The one week that passed by was living hell for him, no matter how much he tried to talk to her or even go near her, he could see the fear in her eyes. She would simply walk away without a word, leaving him all the more guiltier. Maan sat on the far edge of the bed looking at her; the tears were still streaming down her eyes. All he wanted to do was reach his hand out to her and wipe those tears away.
Geet blankly stared at magazine flipping the pages but her thoughts were someplace else. Her heart pained every time she saw Maan looking at her painfully and expectantly whenever they came in front of each other. His eyes never met hers.! How could she tell him that she didn't have the courage to listen anymore. His few words had shattered her world, what would the entire truth do.? She wasn't ready to face the truth. What if she would hate him after hearing the truth, her heart wasn't ready for it. She had considered him her world and his few words had managed to show her the reality, it had all started with a lie. A lie which she had lost her heart to, only to be left broken in the end. Daadimaa came into the room to find Geet staring blankly into something but her eyes said it all, her mind was someplace else. It had been one week and there was no change in Geet, her pain was starting to worry Daadimaa. Maan on the other hand had completely engrossed himself in work knowing he wouldn't be able to bear seeing Geet in pain nor would he able to soothe her pain. It was dreadful since between the two of them, there was no scope of words. Despite all his efforts, he couldn't break Geet's silence. No matter how much he tried to hide his pain, his ashen face would always give it away. Tears pricked the corner of Daadimaa's eyes as she thought of their suffering. Wiping her tears away, she approached Geet.
Good morning Geet beta. Daadimaa said taking a seat on the bed next to Geet. Her hand reached out and caressed her pale face. Daadimaa's heart clenched looking at the broken state of her children.
Good morning Daadimaa. Geet meekly replied putting away the magazine.
You didn't have your breakfast again today.? I won't accept this bte, I can understand what you must be going through beta, but this is not the solution. This way you will only spoil your health. Come with me, let's have some breakfast. Daadi said taking her hand but Geet stopped her.
Daadimaa, please tell me the truth. Did you know about my father.. Geet said her voice breaking at the end. Daadimaa looked at her painfully and cupped her cheek lovingly.
I'm sorry bte, I know what happened to you was wrong. It's not easy for you to accept all this so soon. Even I am responsible for your pain somewhere. Please forgive your Daadimaa, but I was also bound by my love for my children. Daadimaa said wiping her tears away.
Please Daadi, don't make me feel more miserable by apologizing to me. Daadimaa, I...I... I feel suffocated here now Daadimaa. Every time I try to think about the truth and him..it reminds of what I lost. His presence reminds me of the time he was gone, the days I spent without my dad who was the only person I had after my mom went away from me. Geet cried hiding her face in her hands. Daadimaa looked at her, stunned by her words. It was exactly as she feared.
Geet bte... Daadimaa said painfully. She knew what Geet's words would do to Maan. His fears would after all turn out to be true.
How should I tell him that I am scared to hear more. I am scared that the entire truth will make me hate him. How can I hate him Daadimaa.? It will be the end of me the day I hate him. I am not strong enough anymore to hear the truth. I know I am being very selfish but I can't do this Daadimaa, please take me away from here. Away from all this pain and misery. Away from all this suffocation. Away from Maan. Geet pleaded hugging Daadimaa who sat speechless. Her hand caressed Geet's hair but her thoughts were stuck on Geet's words. How could she choose between both her children. The silence in the room was broken by the thud sound that came off the ground. Geet and Daadimaa looked behind to find Maan staring at them. Daadimaa closed her eyes seeing his pain stricken face.! He had heard every word of their conversation, which would have broken him. The pain was evident on his face. Geet looked at him but he quickly looked away from her, avoiding meeting her eyes once again.
Daadimaa, I only came to tell you that I am leaving for office. I might come back late, please don't wait for me. Maan said in a low voice, trying to hide his tears but Daadimaa had already seen them. He left the room closing the door which closed with a slight thud.
Geet's eyes snapped open as the vase fell to the ground breaking the silence in the cabin. She looked around the room frantically to find herself in her office, with a file open in front of her. The window was open with strong wind blowing into her cabin, knocking the vase over. Geet walked towards the window, the cold wind hitting her face as she tried closing the window. The past had never left her. His face, his words; everything about him still haunted her day and night. Geet sighed as she thought about what his arrival would do to her. Before she could think any further, a knock on her door broke her thoughts.
Come in. She said taking a seat. Trisha walked in with an envelope in her hand.
Ma'am this is for you. Trisha said placing the envelope on the table and left the room. Geet's eyes widened in horror and her anger rose to a new level as she looked at the contents of the envelope.
Trisha, book am appointment for Mr.Rathode tomorrow morning. Inform him that I want to see him tomorrow morning in my office at any cost. It's time I deal with him on a serious note. Geet snapped into the phone and it came back crashing into its cradle. Grabbing her bag, Geet walked out of the office irritated with all the happenings around her. A part of her feared facing him after 3 years but another part of her was also worried about what fate had in store for them. The fate that had played with them and changed their lives.
