Hi, Radhika, history -geek as a proud kannadiga I would like to post lessor known but gr8 woman warriors, rulers frm karnataka n redeem myself.
Abbakka Chowta, queen of Ullal who fought against portguese in the later half of 16th century. She belonged to Chowta dynasty who ruled Tulunadu. She was trained by her uncle tirumala raya in warfare techniquesShe retalliated several attacks of Portuguese successfully n called Abhaya rani
2.Another Chennamma,i.e Keladi chennemma was the queen of keladi kingdom (1677- 1689) in Karnataka.Keladi kingdom was found after the fall of Vijayanagara Empire. After her husband's death, she efficientely handelled admnstn. n repelled the advances of mughal army led by infamous Aurangzeb She entered into trade agreement with Potuguese n came to be known as Pepper queen😃 most importantly she povided shelter to Rajaram Chhatrpati, shivaji's son when he was fleeing frm Aurangzeb.when Aurangzeb attacked Keladi, chennamma fought the battle without defeat n the battle ended in treaty👏Her cabinet was headed by Thimmannanayaka who was descendent of commanderof Vijayanagara. Keladi kingdom probably was last to lose it's autonomy to mysore ruler n subsequently to the British.
3 Onake Obavva During the reign of Madakarinayaka, the city of Chitradurga was beseiged by the troops of Hyder Ali (1720- 1782) A chance sighting of a man entering the Chitrdurga fortthrough a hole in the rock led to a plan by Hyder ali to send his soldiers thru that hole. The guard on duty had gone home fr lunch, n his wife Obavva went to fetch water fr him frm the pond near that hol inthe rock. She noticed the army trying to enter the fort through the hole. She used Onake, (a wooden long club used fr agricultural work) to kill the soldiers one by one by hitting on thier head n quietly moving the bodies without raising any suspicion. When her guard husband retured, he was shocked to se her with bloostained onake. Both of them fought the army successfully, but it is said later on she died there only may be due t shock of having killed hundreds of men.
4.There has a;lready been post regarding our own famous kittur Chennamma '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
best known fr leading rebellion against British east India com.She fought fiercly with the aid of her lieutinant Sngolli Rayanna( on whom there has been a movie also) was ultimatly captured and died in prison.

Hi Geeta,

Thank you so much for providing these details. I find it amazing that today we keep talking of women's liberation but back in those days, they just went right ahead and fought for their rights without asking for any favors from anyone.

I esp love the story of Onake Obavva! The others were queens and had had warfare training. Besides they had their armies to help them. But here was a simple lady who had no military training and who wasn't even required to fight the enemy single-handedly. She could have kept quiet or merely informed her husband or another guard nearby. But she was so loyal to her kingdom that she used the tool at hand to quietly and efficiently dispose of the enemy.

What an amazing lineup of women have come from your region! 👏

Radhika, Yes! we all should be proud to be born in such a culturally rich country, where we find patriots in every nook n corner.Unfortunately, we hv a very contrived study of history in our school where we r taught only of our regional rulers/ leaders. In Maharashtra, it is Shivaji, in Rajasthan it is Maharana Pratap, in Karnataka,it is Krishnadevaraya, Vishnuvardhan, in andhra if I am not mistaken, Raja raja chola, in the north Chandragupta Mourya, Ashoka, so on.It was really a pleasure to read abt Ahilyabai Holkar, Rani Durgavati. On cultural front I can add Natyarani Shantala, wife of king Vishnuvardhan, who may be the only queen, who herself was an accoplished dancer. The monuments at Beluru n Halebeedu r the living examples of her love fr architecture.
I think, this visual medium goes a long way not only in spreading the knowledge of lessor known gr8 people, but also rests in public memory fr a pretty long time.Let me confess to u that I had little idea abt the jodha - Akbar story, apart frm the thing that Akbar had a Hindu wife by name jodhabai he had built a mahal fr her with a mandir in it. it was as simple as that, till the time I saw the movie by Govarikar, n realised how difficult cou;ld hv been fr that lady, who was married against her wish to totally different community, to adjust in that hostile environment, without the support of her family nor her husband and still emerge as a winner!👏 How brave n gritty that lady would hv been!👍🏼As long as the show is true in spirit to the bravery of that woman, I would like to grin n bear the other shortcomings of the serial😃

Hi Radhika,
Only Onake Obavva was mentioned here in the books of history on Chitradurga (despite having many more such ladies during Madakari Nayaka's rule) as she single handedly guard the secret entrance to the fort while her husband was away for lunch and she thought she should not disturb him while eating. So she just used the nearby pounding stick as her weapon (even today it is followed that the male should not get without completeing his food as it is bad omen). She had no time to inform others and had to act immediately. By the time her husband reached teh spot, she just asked him to blow the alarm to call the army to that spot and by the time army reached the spot, one enemy soldier who was half dead stbbed her from behind and she collapsed there but with agrin on her face that she served her mother earth which gave birth to her and took care of her. she must have been in her teens while she did this great work. But Madakarinayaka's grand mother had a full battalion of women soldiers ( not be wetrained ons) but were ready to behead the enemies. She was teh one who taught the bravery to the king while he was unable to see the blood, she had asked him to play with his friends some girly games (like doll marriage) while she will go and fight the enemies.
@Geeta: If you have not read the books written by TARASU (in Kannada), please read teh complete series of chitradurga history, they are great and you will feel that you are actually living with them. You will be thrilled as well as have the chill run through your spinal while reading "Rakta Rathri"

Hi all.

This is with reference to today's episode. Though, i have NOT seen the episode.
But got many PMs asking about Chand Begum.

Yes, Humayun HAD a wife named Chand Begum whom he lost at the Battle of Chausa, against Sher Shah Suri. This Begum was 7 months pregnant, when she was Lost.

Not only her but another wife named Shad Begum was also Lost. A daughter Aqiqa was also lost. I know ONLY this much at the moment. Remembered this as i had read her name.
I have only this much info noted in my diary right now. About future Plots No idea. 😊

Thnks Abhay for answering my question.
Now the mystery is getting clear. She was 7th months pregnant. So I think Shehnaz is her daughter. Shehnaz was separated from her mother after her birth. Now she came back to demand her takhth.
But Abhay in reality was Chand Begum was ever found?

Here is more information on Chand Bibi - one of Humayun's Begum - she was supposedly 7 months pregnant when she was lost (thought to have been drowned with Shad Bibi, another of Humayun's wife) in the battle of Chausa.

Btw Hindal Mirza is supposed to have back stabbed Humayun around this time and even supposed to have had the Kutba read in his name at Agra.

Bega Begum or Haji Begum was captured during Chausa battle and her daughter Aquiqa Begum is supposed to have been lost / drowned during the same seige.
Also Humayun is supposed to have not had good relations with Bega Begum during this time and he is supposedly not have been on friendly terms with her even after - the reason being she is supposed to have been very much in love with Humayun whereas he was not so and since he had other wives, Bega Begum is supposed to have felt that he was not doing justice to her and is supposed to have said so to Humayun before the battle of Chausa.

Also the battle of Chausa happened in 1540, much before Humayun met and fell in love with Hamida Bano!!!!

Was this war was prior to Jalal's birth or later? If by any chance is Shehanaz the daughter of Chand Begum? Is SHehnaz also searching for teh same farman, Maham is searching for so that she can climb teh throne? She wanted to know some deatils from humayun Nama (she searched teh script in gulbadhan Begum's hojra) during teh Jashn. If she is Jalal's elder sister, then her anger towards Jalal is justified as she must be thinking that her father didn';t botehr to search for his missing pregnant wife instead he married a new Begum and had a warees from her
