PROLOGUE
He stared at the piece of paper in horror. He tried to process the thoughts at the rate they flooded into his mind. It was not easy. He knew his end was nearer than he had thought. He could sense it. He had a task to accomplish before it was too late. The plan was quite clear. Their hunt for the perfect and trustworthy was finally over. Now it was time to hand over the responsibility into these capable hands.
His brains were working at a rate so rapid as never before. He searched for his mobile which was lying on the table covered under some scattered papers, yellow and worn out. He drifted aside the papers to grasp the handset. He deleted all the saved data... contacts, messages, emails, applications... he cleared everything. He took out the sim card and the memory card and broke them into pieces. Leaving the dismantled phone and the broken cards on the table, he hurried out locking the main door, towards the PCO booth across the street. It was about 11:45 pm. The street was clear, but dark, except for the dim street lights, a wine shop at the corner, and a grocery shop with the PCO booth.
"Arey Miyan, aap iss waqt yahan?" Shankar, owner of the booth, asked in surprise. It was time to close the shop.
"Haan, ek zaroori phone karna tha... Err, kya main kar sakta hoon?"
"Jee bilkul...!"
Shankar stared at his customer in suspiscion, as he dialed a number in hurry. The person on the other side picked up the phone. There was silence for a moment. The silence broke as Shankar heard his customer speak...
"Mujhe chitthi mili hai..."
"Jaanta hoon"
"Maine unhein bula liya hai. Buss dair hone se pehele meri unse baat ho jaaye..."
"Mujhe yakeen hai woh iss zimmedaari ki geherai ko samjhenge aur isay nibhaaenge..."
"Ameen. Ab aagey sab aap ke haath mein hai."
"Main poori koshish karunga Abdul ji!"
"Khuda Hafiz!"
As Abdul hung the receiver, Shankar, who was curious to know what was wrong with Abdul, showed himself busy in preparing to close the shop for the day. Abdul paid for the call and left in hurry. Shankar stared at him, as Abdul disappeared into the darkness. Shankar couldn't help thinking, "Pata nahi Abdul Sahab ko kya ho gaya hai... zaroor kuchh toh baat hai!!"
