About Lagaan

By mixing two of India's greatest loves - cinema and cricket - Aamir Khan's debut production has become the new benchmark for Bollywood and the first Indian classic of the 21st century

With unprecedented Bollywood hype, Lagaan had a lot to live up to.Secrecy shrouded production and, even up until cinematic release, audiences had no idea what the film was about. It lived up to the hype though, with word of mouth speaking of a masterpiece on its release.

Set in a small village in British-ruled India, Lagaan tells the story of a group of farmers, men with simple dreams, who are vainly waiting for the elusive rains.

With their crops withering away in the blazing sun, the farmers hear news of their British masters, led by the arrogant Captain Russell (Blackthorne), who have demanded double tax - known as Lagaan. The group visit the British cantonment, only to be challenged by Russell to a game of cricket. If they win, they are exempt from the tax. If they lose, it will mean triple tax.

The farmers are led by Bhuvan (producer-star Khan) who accepts the challenge and sets out to learn about this confusing game. One by one he cajoles the disaffected villagers in to playing, to beat the British in this bloodless battle.

Aamir Khan proves why he is one of Bollywood's biggest draws in an expert portrayal of a frustrated but spirited farmer. Equally impressive is the direction of Gowariker, contrasting the drought-ridden landscapes with the palatial luxury of British dwellings.

The song and dance sequences are animated and evocative. It is difficult for any Bollywood movie to fit in songs during a serious narrative, but Lagaan achieves this adroitly, including songs with seamless energy.

Lagaan concludes with the most tense and exciting game of cricket seen on the silver screen, a match that even ardent football fans will enjoy.

With some laugh out loud comedy and tear jerking emotion, Lagaan will be the film all others in Bollywood are judged against, in terms of both creativity and success.
