I sometimes wonder, what facets remain to be explored in the romance genre by dream merchants here? Right from MUGHAL-E-AZAM to BOBBY, EK DUUJE KE LIYE, HERO, QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, MAINE PYAR KIYA and DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE, to the love stories attempted by new-age directors of late, just about every facet of love and romance has been explored and presented on the silver screen. Every film-maker, from K. Asif, Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra to Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, have delivered some memorable love stories that hold tremendous recall value.

But pyaar, ishq, mohabbat can never go out of fashion. Besides, every film-maker has his/her individualistic style of interpreting a love tale...

Ironically, when a star-kid takes his first step in Bollywood, his launch pad, intuitively, is designed as a love story. Tiger Shroff's debut vehicle HEROPANTI is no exception. A remake of the Telugu Hit PARUGU [2008; starring Allu Arjun, Sheela, Prakash Raj], which was remade subsequently in other Indian languages, HEROPANTI has been modified in its Hindi avatar [albeit slightly] to suit the North Indian sensibilities. It's a vintage love story that gives its lead actor ample scope to depict heroism and waltz into your heart. Does it work, let's find out!

Let's enlighten you about the premise of the film, before we proceed ahead. Chaudhary's [Prakash Raj] eldest daughter [Sandeepa Dhar] elopes with her boyfriend minutes before her marriage. Resultantly, Chaudhary's relatives and henchmen start searching for the guy in question and kidnap his friends, including Bablu [Tiger Shroff]. Apparently, Bablu has lost his heart to Dippy [Kriti Sanon], who happens to be Chaudhary's younger daughter. What happens next?

Director Sabbir Khan brings all his tropes to the table -- ample twists, turns and melodrama, striking action pieces, ear-pleasing music, eye-filling locales and of course, the crackling chemistry of the lead pair. Borrowing a page out of the contemporary masala movies re-invented by Prabhu Dheva specifically, Sabbir presents an absorbing fare that hits the right notes as far as love stories are concerned. The ecstasy of first love, the stern father and the wall of opposition, the never-give-up attitude of the lovers... it's a familiar world no doubt, but Sabbir makes sure he keeps you absorbed and engaged at the same time.

In a first of its kind on the Hindi screen, HEROPANTI offers some daredevil stunts that would leave you awe-inspired -- the martial arts, the back flips, the parkour sequence, the aerial moves and the kicks... all filmed without a body double. That's Tiger's core strength and the director capitalises on it completely. As a matter of fact, Tiger, well-trained in gymnastics and martial arts, fills the 'action hero' slot that had been lying vacant for a while now. The naysayers may scoff at this aspect being given too much importance, but, hello, that's the boy's USP, so why not capitalise on it? Also, HEROPANTI is an unapologetic commercial masala fare that also happens to be the launch vehicle of a star-kid, so why not press all the buttons?

Hiccups? The problem with this genre is that you need to constantly offer riveting stuff to the viewer. Since one can guess the direction the story is heading, it becomes imperative to be on the go constantly. The writing hits a rough patch after a point, with the conflict between the lovers and the girl's stubborn parent being stretched slightly. Also, inserting a party song [while the search mission is on in Delhi] looks weird in the scheme of things. Additionally, the emergence of the jealous groom [Vikram Singh] in the climax takes the film to the predictable zone. The finale has traces of DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE, but looks completely justified here. Having said that, HEROPANTI is shades much, much better than the lazy entertainers we've been subjected to in the recent past.

Most debut vehicles of star-kids are embellished with a lilting soundtrack and the songs of HEROPANTI, one must admit, are peppy, youth-centric and fit the context well, especially 'Whistle Baja' [the signature tune of HERO is the icing on the cake], 'Rabba' and 'Tabah'. For a film that makes no qualms about being an entertainer, the dialogue are punctuated accordingly. They are aimed at the hoi polloi, soaked in energy, power and acid, as the situation demands. The background score is top notch.

Tiger Shroff flaunts his chiseled, well-sculpted physique with six packs et al uninhibitedly and scores brownie points in action and stunts. As an actor, Tiger registers an impact in several sequences. For a first-timer, he exudes supreme confidence -- he looks the tough guy he has been entrusted to be, yet enact the romantic with conviction. This should make the spectators connect extremely well with his character. Kriti, who debuted in a Telugu biggie earlier this year [1: NENOKKADINE, starring Mahesh Babu], looks gorgeous and handles her part with certainty and confidence. She has the trappings of a star, no two opinions on that. Prakash Raj, who had performed the same role in the original Telugu film, is a seasoned actor who gets his character spot-on.

Sandeepa Dhar is effective in a cameo. Vikram Singh is alright. The actors portraying the part of Tiger's friends perform well.

On the whole, HEROPANTI is designed as a launch pad for Tiger Shroff and it gives him ample opportunity to prove his credentials in his debut film. The good news is, he delivers a striking performance. Additionally, what works is the masala quotient -- melodrama, music and action. An entertainer that hits the right notes!http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/moviemicro/criticreview/id/563936

Heropanti Review

Lately, when it comes to newcomers in Bollywood it has mostly been about star kids and television stars taking a step up to the world of films. So with Heropanti we have another star kid making his debut. This time it is Tiger Shroff, the son of Jackie Shroff, being provided with the mega launch. The publicity campaign has been relentless around this film. Does it all work out for the lead actor and for the film? Let's find out.

Story: Heropanti is a remake of the 2008 Telugu hit film Parugu starring Allu Arjun which has been remade in almost half a dozen other languages. Heropanti tells the story of Bablu (Tiger Shroff), a wisecrack and a daredevil, who gets caught up in a mess because he helps his friend elope with the daughter of a powerful village lord Chaudhary (Prakash Raj). The twist in his life arises when he falls in love with the younger daughter (Kriti Sanon) of Chaudhary. This leads to a series of chases and action set-pieces that give Tiger Shroff ample opportunities to exhibit his chiseled body. Heropanti also serves as the umpteenth derivation of the evergreen blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

Heropanti Movie Review

Screenplay and Direction: Director Shabbir Khan (who debuted with the intrepid Kambakkht Ishq) is entrusted with the responsibility of remaking the Telugu hit for Hindi audiences. Shabbir is a smart adapter as he adds North Indian elements like the Haryana honour killings. If only he had chosen to make the film a little less predictable. The biggest issue with the Heropanti script is that it doesn't jolt the viewer with a sudden dose of surprise or unpredictability. Everything happens as it is meant to happen. But thankfully, Shabbir gets the pacing of the film right as Heropanti chugs along at a swift pace.

Heropanti being mainly an action film (specifically focusing on martial arts) hits the right notes when it comes to cinematography and action choreography. The action set-pieces catch the viewer's attention because of the fine execution. The editing is decent. But the costume designs seem very unrealistic. The music of Heropanti is good with more than one hummable track being a part of the soundtrack. Whistle Baja, and Rabba shine.

Acting: As has already been mentioned, Heropanti works less as a film but more as an advertisement for the skills of Tiger Shroff. He gets to do almost everything that is required of a Bollywood actor in Heropanti - dance, romance, comedy and action. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) Tiger Shroff seems to be more at ease doing his action and dancing scenes than he is in scenes which require him to be expressive. He needs to work harder if he has ambitions of becoming a big superstar. Kriti Sanon, however, is like a breath of fresh air. She sails through her scenes with lan. It helps that she is a looker. Prakash Raj is the main antagonist in the film and does a fine job as expected. He shows his range in emotional scenes.

Conclusion: Heropanti follows the template of Prabhu Deva's recent blockbusters and to a large extent holds up. The pacing is right and the entertainment is also there. Even though Tiger Shroff isn't much of an actor right now, you can watch Heropanti for his action capabilities. He pulls it off masterfully. Watch Heropanti if you are in the mood for a youthful bollywood masala.

Box Office: Heropanti will take an average opening because of the fine publicity campaign. If the tone of the film clicks, then Heropanti could go on to be a good earner.

Positives:

  • The entertainment quotient of the film is high
  • Tiger Shroff masters his action and dancing in Heropanti
  • Kriti Sanon and Prakash Raj shine
  • The action choreography and cinematography are in unision.
  • The music

Negatives:

  • The predictability of the script
  • The bang bang action won't work well beyong the youth segments
  • Tiger Shroff can't act
  • The costume designs are unrealistic
  • The attempts at a social message come across as convoluted and manipulative

Heropanti review: Tiger Shroff can do stunts, but that's about it

Another star son. Big launch. Action hero. New heroine. Hit songs. The works. Does it work?

The best thing that could be said about Heropanti is that it is not as terrible as Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar films. The second best thing about it is that Tiger Shroff may be effeminate, but he's a likable guy who can do some truly amazing stunts.

This is where the positive aspects of Heropanti end, because everything else in the movie is a raging river of stupidity. The daughter of a Haryanvi goon (Prakash Raj) runs away with her lover, so the goon decides to kidnap the friends of the lover. One of the friends includes Bablu (Shroff), an ultra muscular head and shoulders model who develops the hots for the goon's other daughter (Sanon). That, gentlemen, is the entire plot of the film. It all plays out like a screenplay that was deemed just a little too good' for Akshay or Salman to anchor the thing, and there's very little here that desi masala aficionados haven't seen a thousand times before. As the characters glide through the tedium a bunch of random songs and unrelated plot contortions take place in the background. It all leads up to a finale that offers a few casual fight scenes and a DDLJ homage of a finale that'll have you wondering hmph, ok, what else is on?'

Since this is a Bollywood movie, we're offered the usual menu of masala - regression, blatant misogyny, brash jokes and awful stereotyping. All of the honchos in Daddy Goon's North Indian city are abusive, rapey, murdering, honor-killing thugs who treat women like cattle. They also crack jokes like Mai tumhara The End karunga aur phir us ladki ki opening ceremony karunga'. And they threaten by describing their loaded gun as Ye missed call nahi deta, seedha connect karta hai'.

Shroff is thankfully there to balance things out. He's quite unapologetic about who he is. He makes an entry at a fight scene in a gym. After every kick and punch he looks at the camera and smiles cutely. He rescues an eloped couple, puts them on a bus, and then runs behind the bus fist pumping and screaming haar mat manna, I got you bro'. It's his sheer sincerity amidst the over the top rubbish that wins you over. Sure, he looks like Kareena Kapoor doing insane kickboxing stunts, and the romance between Shroff and Sanon seems like a desi version of Blue is the Warmest Color, but that doesn't make him unlikable. He's a great action hero, the problem is there's too little action in this film. Team him up with Vidyut Jamwal in a good action movie and we'll get a genuinely fun ride.

It's hard to expect a smart female character in film like this, and Sanon is fine in her ludicrous role. But I'd say it's a huge shame to see what's become of Prakash Raj since the past five years. It seems he's discovered the golden ticket to Willy Wonka's factory - the template villainous role in Simbly South style Hindi films. He's no different here, aside from the seriously high octane dose of unintentional hilarity. Some of his emotional scenes are gut busting funny - he bawls loudly on the road with a wine bottle, does the shimmy on a park bench, exaggerates pain by heaving his chest and even delicately places Shroff's hand on his thigh. So when he asks Shroff Tum me aisa kya hai jo meri beti ko dikhta hai aur mujhe nahi dikhta', a thunderstorm of laughter erupts in the theatre. I personally can't wait for his choice clips to be uploaded on YouTube.
