Its simple. If a film provides entertainment it will work. I haven't see hawaa hawaai so can't comment but amol is very talented.
Chak De India worked because people gave it a chance. Had it not been SRK, I highly doubt it would have worked. The acting by all + story told was brilliant. Also there was a feel good factor when the film ended. Hence audience entertained.

Dil Bole Haddipa: Too cheesy. A lot of stupid stuff. Audience got bored.

Patiala House: The biggest problem IMO was why the England team. People didn't actually care when Akshay Kumar played for England. Everybody would want to see their team win. Nobody could connect with England. Also the story didn't make sense. Rishi Kapoor lived in England, used their services, his livelihood was dependent on britishers yet he was so against them.

However analyst Taran Adarsh argues that it's not the genre, but the content that drives the viewer. "If the content is good then there is no reason for a film not to work," he says.

^^I agree with this part.
IMO, Hawaa Hawaai didn't do well bcos of poor marketing. So many people didn't even know of the film. It just came and went.

We've had sports based films doing well too, when they were made on the scale they deserved, backed by a good story and performances and were promoted well.

CDI, Iqbal, KPC, BMB worked bcos of these reasons. Now Mary Kom is coming and it is a highly anticipated project, the buzz around it seems quite good.

The article speaks of MSD biopic, fingers crossed we get an official announcement soon. Maybe after IPL..

Its a long way to capture sports as a real life sports bt BW cameras.. As good as Lagaan was and CDI was, the climax when sports take over were pathetic.. and we watch how the tv cameras capture the momnets... its bigger task for BW than Sci-fi!

I relate to Mehra's words. These movies are so predictable and so boring. I liked Jo Jeeta Woh Sikandar and Iqbal, but the rest appear to be the same. If you're into sports it's better to watch something than watch a boring movie about it.

These movies would work if they had a better script and better dialogues. Unfortunately most of them are cliched and boring. When you are watching them you're aware you're watching a movie you don't get absorbed into the story.

Sports in B/g is not not sports movie.. BW has big challange to make a sports movie.. the prob is we need so much time to develop characters and story and songs and emotional dramas..
WE can say we have a sci-fi superhero movie.. but a sport movie.. NOPE!

I highly doubt Mary Kom would work.
The chances of female centric films working in India is still very low. Queen worked only because of word of mouth. It was fantastic movie. The movie couldn't take an opening. Mary Kom, it will be something similar.
