Salim started drinking at 18 once he had lost way and was feeling very thirsty and no water to drink officer gave him alcohol, salim liked it and started drinkinggg again and again and became addicted. But this had a good effect on next generations that he ensured his sons/nephews and grandsons never become addicted and banned alcohol in empire. So atleast that prevented quiet a few from becoming addicts like him.
All of Akbar's sons were drunkked why? they could not match expectation of their father's level that made them frustrated. They could not match Akbar's level of work etc. It happens with very famous and successful children. Expectation from people are very high because you are Akbar's sons but you are not that politically shrewd or interested in running empire but have to as you are his son's and prince's. Everyday everyone keeps increasing the expectation from you you always have to be gaurded what you speak, way you behave, way you dress, way you eat everything is observed and commented and rated against your father. But you have different personality than your father yet they expect you to be like him. That frustrates an human a lot to be what he is not in reality. So they try to lose themselves in make believe world of drinks, party, drugs(same in 21st century too). The second reason is friends, your enemies cannot destroy you as much as your friends can by wrong advice which benefits them. Salim's all friends were not true friends of his but became his friends because of who he was and always gave him advice which benefitted them not him. Same for Murad and Daniyal. When you are rich and powerful you must be careful who to make friends whom not. Especially an emperor's son is like an emperor he has no friends and is alone always. He cannot and should not easily trust anyone. But you must be street smart to recognise who is your true friend which Akbar's children were not.
Its like what we expect of a superstar son should be superstar or a PM's son will be good PM but they are just not made for that, they are just forced because its their family business. Same case with Salim.
But you are right Akbar was very particular about class and status when it came to his sons (later daughters and grand daughters) marrying. Akbar also felt uncertain because his mother was not from a royal family. Because if she was from royal family he would have got a support from atleast maternal family but he had to struggle alone to establish empire. And see how his commoner brother-in-laws treated him trying to kill him to become emperors again and again they did not spare salim a kid also in their attempts. He did not want that fate on his children may be. So he opposed them marrying commoners and only wanted royal bahu's or royal son-in-laws.
