Buddha Jayanti also referred to as Buddha Purnima or Vesak is considered to be the holiest time in the Buddhist calendar and the sacred festival of the Buddhist. It is celebrated in the first full moon day of May/month of Vaishak except for the leap years. It is celebrated to mark the Birth anniversary of Lord Buddha and commemorate the three most important events of his life: His Birth(in 563 BCE in Lumbini, Nepal.),His enlightenment (Buddhatto) and His death (Maha parinirvana)

The spiritual teacher, Buddha's teachings and followers formed the new religion Buddhism. His teachings were to free people from sorrow and desires which were the main cause of misery and suffering.

The four Noble Truth understood By Lord Gautam Buddha himself were:

Life means suffering, The origin of suffering is attachment, The cessation of suffering is attainable, The path to the cessation of suffering.

Gautam Buddha recommended the 'The Noble Eight fold Path' which was a step to the end of suffering and live a content life.

-Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration

If we follow this path we will lead to the ultimate aim Nirvana which he attained at the age of 80.



In the honour and remembrance of Lord Buddha, Buddha Jayanti is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. Visiting monasteries, remembering Buddha's virtues and teachings, listening to sermons by monks, group meditation are the main events taken place in the particular day.

Buddhist bathe and wear only white clothe. Kheer is served mainly to avoid non-vegetarian food. They give alms to the poor and set caged birds free to display affection for the living beings. Statues of Lord Buddha are offered with flowers, candles, incense and fruits. They reaffirm their believe in the five principles called the Panchsheel which are: Not to take life, Not to steal, Not to lie, Not to consume liquor or other intoxicants and Not to commit adultery.

Moreover, Buddha Jayanti is observed to be one of the most auspicious occassion serving equality among everyone.

Live every act fully, as if it were your last. -Buddha.
