Chapter 8
Part 2 (a)

A sense of excitement that Arnav never knew he was capable of experiencing, had started to build when he had left for the venue and gradually increased by every passing minute, which finally reached the threshold level when he entered the hall with his Nani. And when he thought he could no longer handle it, he was finally bestowed with a sight he was dying to behold ever since he had left her at SPARC all those days back. Dressed in an off-white Anarkali suit with intricate Magenta and gold work at the neckline and magenta patch work at the flare and sleeves, complemented with churidaar pant and dupatta that went with the border, Khushi stood with Lavanya, smiling at something she was saying. But the moment he spotted her, Lavanya looked in his direction and told her something, to which she almost immediately stiffened. As Arnav led his Nani towards the first row, his mind barely registered that Shashi welcomed them and NK and Payal took blessings from the elders, his gaze fixed on Khushi who was now led to them by Shyam. He drank in her appearance like a parched traveler in the hot deserts of Sahara and came back to Earth when she was introduced to Devyani. She bent down to touch Devyani's feet when the elder woman stopped her by her shoulders and took her into a motherly hug. Arnav looked on with a warm smile as Khushi was hugged by Manorama and Anjali and blessed by Manohar. Just as he was about to greet her and make his presence known, Shyam whispered in his ears to accompany him and Shashi to meet the press before the commencement of the programme. Arnav nodded his head, but before he left, he came near Khushi and said softly,

"Khushi ! Hi ! I need to meet the press briefly. I will talk to you when I am back"

Khushi knew he was there even before he spoke, Lavanya had told her about the arrival of the Raizadas. But the impact of his presence hit her when he spoke and all she could manage to do was to stutter a greeting and nod in the affirmative before he turned around and left with Shyam.

By the time Arnav came back, the stage was set for the chief guests and other dignitaries. The event started without further ado with Devyani lighting the traditional lamp to mark the inauguration followed by a rendition of invocation song by Veena. Payal welcomed the gathering and introduced the dignitaries on the dais to the audience while kids of SPARC presented each of them with a flower bouquet. Shashi, then, addressed the audience and explained the journey of SPARC briefly followed by playing a video on the activities and future plans of SPARC. A few children who had cleared eligibility tests for treatment for restoration of sight, but couldn't afford the expenses associated with the surgery, were presented with cheques by some of the patrons of SPARC. Then Shyam gave a powerpoint presentation explaining the objective of the proposed non-profit residential school for Children with special needs. Shyam highlighted AR's contribution and association with the project and stated the philanthropic gestures of many of the patrons who had volunteered to help SPARC with the project. He appealed to the gathering to make their generous contributions through various options listed in the project brochure given to them at the entrance. Finally Arnav gave a short and to the point Chief guest address, lauding the Guptas for their initiative and vision for a noble cause. He specified humbly his plan to be associated with the residential school project and surprised the hosts by announcing that a percentage of every purchase made on AR's products would be contributed to the project. Khushi listened to his speech attentively and her heart flowed with pride at his plans. She recalled the evening he had come home to apologize and how she had convinced him to attend the fundraiser and unknowingly caressed her phone with a smile playing on her lips. When Arnav concluded his speech, NK thanked the dignitaries and requested them to occupy their assigned seats in the audience and sit back to enjoy a variety entertainment to be performed by the students and staff of SPARC. Arnav and Shashi were the last to get down from the stage and Arnav noticed that the seats next to Khushi and Devyani were vacant. His awareness of being among the family prevented him from occupying the seat next to Khushi, not wanting to raise unnecessary suspicions among the overenthusiastic members of his family and proceeded to sit next to Devyani, but Shashi stopped him and asked him to take the seat next to Khushi as he wanted to explain the proceedings of the programme to Devyaniji himself. Arnav just wanted to hug Shashi for always helping him, but instead nodded and settled down next to her. Ten days of sheer torture finally paid off, he thought sighing blissfully.

The variety entertainment began with a colorful dance by children with hearing loss mimicking Payal and staff of SPARC on a cheerful medley featuring popular Bollywood songs including Bum bum bole', Gun gun guna re' and Itni si hasi'. Arnav was giving a running commentary to Khushi.

"Khushi ! The kids are dressed in colorful clothes and are wearing different animal masks. There are huge cut out of trees forming the backdrop giving the picture of animals having fun in the forest. There are fans set on either side of the stage which make the leaves look like they are..." He was about to say ruffled by the breeze, when she said, "dancing flames"

That was when he noticed that Khushi was looking without a wink in the direction of the stage which was brightly lit as the kids removed their masks and bowed to the cheering audience before moving towards the backstage as the song came to an end. Arnav was confused.

Why did she say that? It was as if she saw it. If he were to assume that she did some guess work, given that she had eyesight for some years of her life, it puzzled him since he never mentioned to her that the leaves of the trees in the backdrop were orange and yellow in color and not green as it is expected to be assumed if not mentioned specifically. But she said dancing flames. Why?

The beginning of the next programme brought Arnav out of his reverie. It was a skit played out by the students of SPARC, beautifully depicting a difficult journey of a visually challenged boy from losing vision, struggling through the hardships of life including adjusting to the changed environment, social and family relationships, education and job, economic woes and to finally getting back his eye sight through treatment financially aided by an NGO. Three students of SPARC, a kid, a boy and a man in early twenties, played the role of the blind person portraying his life spanning his childhood to adulthood. The inspiring song Yeh safar bahut hai Khatin magar na udaas ho mere humsafar', one of the last musical creations of R D Burman, was chosen as the back ground song that played through the difficult stage of the boy and a picture presentation played in the background stressing the role of government, NGOs and philanthropists in making the dream of many such people come true, leaving no dry eye in the audience. Before it ended, NK came and took Khushi with him much to Arnav's displeasure.

While the audience was still reeling under the impact of the emotions the play had invoked, Arnav became thoughtful. Amidst the emotional interplay that had assailed his senses, Arnav couldn't help but recall what Khushi said during the dance. With the progress that he had made with Khushi, he was still unsure of approaching her directly about her condition, as he knew well that the accident that led to the loss of her eyesight was a risky subject and he didn't know what to expect. He decided that asking Payal or Shashi Uncle was a safe option. At that moment, the curtains were raised once again and the dark stage came alive with a single focus light revealing NK in the center of the stage sitting in front of a musical key board and Veena and another girl sitting on his either side.

(If you are reading from mobile, I suggest you listen to the song before reading further)

NK played the opening notes of what looked like a prelude to a familiar musical piece. Four beats later, a second focus light came alive on a flautist, who Arnav recognized as the boy Madan from SPARC. There were two visually challenged children on his either side too. He began to play on his flute, the renowned Bombay theme music'. Madan sincerely and quite successfully reproduced the internationally recognized sensational musical genius of AR Rahman. Arnav had always had a penchant for soul stirring music like his mother. He remembered this particular musical piece as the one that ruled his favorite list as a young boy.

Shyam looked on as his thoughts went to a summer many years back when NK had come to stay with them and had started college. He had learnt keyboard in Australia and wanted to buy a keyboard here to practice and play in the college band. A young Khushi was slowly coming back to normalcy after the accident, but was not completely out of her shell yet. Shyam and NK were leaving for a music shop when Shyam asked Khushi if she would like to accompany them and to his surprise, she had immediately agreed. As NK was looking into the various models of keyboard, Khushi stayed by Shyam's side when they heard an instrument being played out and he found Khushi tugging at his hand and pull him towards the direction from where the music was coming from. The music led them to a middle aged man playing some notes to test the quality of the instrument. The man stopped and turned to look at a very curious Khushi who asked,

"What instrument is this?"

"Do you want to learn?"

"But I cant see"

"You don't need to see."

Shyam was shaken back from his memories as the flute part came to an end.

NK played the brief prelude to the subsequent part and a third focus light came alive, stunning Arnav beyond words. There sat Khushi on a high chair holding a violin elegantly, her chin resting on the chin rest of the lower bout of the instrument that was placed comfortably on her left collar bone. A boy was seated on her left side on a wheel chair. She took over from NK's prelude to her part and glided the bow over the strings while her fingers deftly moved over the finger board to reproduce the magical notes. Skillful coordination of her fingers over the fingerboard screamed of inherent talent, expert guidance, years of learning and constant practice. But what stood out was her flair for her instrument that looked like an extension of her body. Her fingers caressed the strings on the fingerboard like a mother caresses her fast asleep child. Khushi easily shifted from the higher octave strings to the lower octave strings as she moved on to the subsequent notes. It is impossible to reproduce music of such scale with limited number of instruments, but NK tried his best by supportively playing the notes on the keyboard to create the effect of multiple violins used in the original soundtrack. Lavanya felt something akin to pride sweep her as she watched NK play the keyboard. Khushi moved back to the higher octave and played the notes to perfection leaving an unexpecting audience stunned. Arnav watched Khushi playing her instrument with passion and unwavering focus, he realized that whatever was his expectation from the evening with her, it was certainly not this and could not have been more gratifying than this.

When Khushi shifted again to the lower octave, Madan joined her on his flute for the closing notes, contrary to the original track, as the kids sang the verses of the song Aankhon mein Ummeedon ke sapne' that were originally tuned for the film Bombay' in accordance with the opening lines of the theme music, leaving the audience enthralled. The closing notes faded away and so did the lights on the stage and the audience promptly broke into a standing ovation to the talent laden evening of entertainment and emotions.

As Arnav stood there putting his hands together to applaud the performance, he found himself experiencing a new found sensation that coursed through his existence giving him a sense of liberation from his self-imposed confinement of sentiments. And that experience paved way for a life changing realization.

Arnav Singh Raizada was falling in love with Khushi Gupta.

Chapter 8
Part 2 (b)
Shashi guided the guests to the dining area and handed over the hospitality part to Ajay, before coming to the green room to find the Guptas and Raizadas interacting. The children took blessings from Devyani before led out by the staff of SPARC to their parents and for dinner. He saw that his sister and Payal's mother had formed a friendship with Arnav's Mami and Payal's dad with Arnav's Mama. While Arnav, Akash, Shyam and NK stood on one side deeply engrossed in discussion, Anjali, Payal, Lavanya and Khushi sat in another side of the room talking and laughing. Shashi went near Devyani and said,

"Dinner is served Devyaniji !"

"Yes, yes. Come children, you all must be famished."

As everyone moved out of the green room towards the dining area, Devyani addressed Shashi,

"Shashiji ! I must admit, you have raised excellent kids."

"God's grace and blessings of elders like you Devyaniji. I take no credit."

"You are very humble Shashiji. But you have every right to be a proud father of such responsible and respectful children."

"I agree with my Amma, Shashiji! Shyam is every father's pride and Khushi, a priced jewel. Oh! How well does she play the violin. And NK? Madhumathiji, your nephew is so grounded and reverential!!"

Manorama turned to Payal's mother and said, "Your daughter too Mrs. Sharma. Akash tells me that she was so responsible and caring even as a young girl."

"Manoramaji, you are very generous. But please allow me to tell you that your children are no less. They have amazed us with their benevolence and involvement in the activities of SPARC in such a short time"

Dinner was full of fun and bonding between the two families. Shashi stayed at the periphery, trying to give attention to their other patrons too. Since it was a buffet dinner, he made sure to introduce Arnav to his colleagues and friends every now and then. That gave Arnav some time to strike a conversation with Shashi. After talking on general topics, Arnav gently probed Shashi telling him about what Khushi told him during the dance programme.

"Uncle ! Is there a reason why Khushi said what she did?"

"Did you ask her? What did she say?"

"No, I wasn't sure if she would be comfortable talking to me about her accident and vision loss."

"Hmmm. You are not entirely wrong in thinking so. That is a touchy subject with Khushi. Well, the moving leaves looked like dancing flames, because that must have been what she perceived it as"

"I...I don't understand. I never told her that the leaves were orange in color."

"I confused you, didn't I? Well, Khushi's loss of vision is not in her eyes, but in her brain."

The discussion was promptly interrupted.

"Mr. Raizada ! Please allow me to offer my appreciation for your remarkable gesture for SPARC"

"Arnav, this is Dr. Ajay Deshmukh, renowned neurologist and visiting consultant at SPARC"

"Nice to meet you Sir."

----------------

"Buaji, you please be seated, I will make Khushi's plate and bring it"

"No No, Anjali bitya, I will manage."

"I insist Buaji, please? Khushi ! I will tell you what is there in the menu, then you can tell me what you want."

"Anjali ! I will tell you what she likes. Come with me" Shyam led her to the long queue near the buffet counter with a knowing smile and Anjali followed with hidden delight. Stealing a few moments with someone special amidst an army of people had its own thrill, she thought.

"So, did you enjoy the evening?"

"Absolutely. But I am cross with you."

"Mm. That's not a very good thing given that we have not even gone on our first date."

"Then what were we doing at Le Meridien?"

"You call that a date? Throw some light, Anjali, doesn't a date end with...?"

"Shut up Shyam. Why didn't you tell me that Khushi was performing today?"

"Oh! It was Khushi's decision to not tell anyone. She wanted it to be a surprise. Did you like it?"

"I loved it. What a splendid performance !! All of them were so good. But Khushi takes the cake not only because of the surprise element, but also because she played like a professional."

"I would have said you are biased, had it not been chutki. I am a proud brother."

"You have every reason to be."

"So tell me what Khushi will like to have. Naan or rumaali roti?"

"Rumaali roti and aalu matar. A little rice and dal. Yes, that's enough. Hand it to me and make yours. Let's eat together."

-----------

The last of the guests except the Raizadas had left. The ladies didn't have the heart to part and the youngsters had something or the other to discuss. It was Devyani who finally reminded that they had a home to get back to and a very tired body to give rest to. As the Guptas and Sharmas walked the Raizadas to the car parking, Arnav retrieved two packages from his car. He handed one to Shyam and said,

"I am sure you have done extensive research for the residential school. I had some time and visited this residential school for children with special needs when I was in London and gathered some information. This contains all their brochures and forms. You may find them useful."

"I appreciate it Arnav. You never cease to surprise me."

He then placed the other package in Khushi's hands, conscious of the people surrounding them and said,

"This is for you, Khushi. Hope you like it."

"That's so nice of you Arnav, thank you!"

Before Devyani sat in the car she turned to Shashi and said "Shashiji ! Now that our families have bonded so well, I will henceforth expect your and Sharmaji's families to be a part of every important event of the Raizadas."

"Its an honor Devyaniji. I am taking the liberty to expect the same from you."

And with that the Raizadas, waved their good byes and drove off.

----------------

That night Anjali and Lavanya's mobile phones got incoming messages from Shyam and NK respectively, making plans for the next day which was a Sunday. Akash's message to Payal, "Are you free tomorrow? Can we meet, Vihaan and Vallerie will also join us. When was the last time you met them?" was replied with two messages. One read, "I am tired to the bones, most likely to sleep it off like a log. Better luck next weekend." And the other, "If I sleep off the weariness and feel fresh by afternoon, will message you. We two can meet. Now don't reply. I am asleep." Akash went off to sleep with a goofy grin.

------------

Khushi lay in her bed and ran her fingers over the dotted letters on the front page of the book Arnav gifted her.

The nerve of the man to give me gift in front of the family.

Would you have been happy if he had given it privately?

What was the need to get me anything in the first place?

Be honest to at least yourself Khushi. You were excited.

Khushi gave rest to her thoughts and read the name of the book again written in Braille.

Louis Braille: A Touch of Genius

She sighed and took her wrist watch. She pushed a button that announced the time. 11.15 pm.

Too late to call. But she wouldn't be able to sleep if she didn't thank him properly. She took her phone, contemplated and kept it back.

"Aren't you asleep yet, Chutki?"

Shashi had been observing his daughter for the past few minutes from the door and was amused by her actions. He understood what she was thinking about as she alternated between caressing the book that Arnav gave and picking up and keeping back her phone.

"Papa? I was just going to sleep. I thought you would have slept?"

"I just got off a call from Arnav. I had asked him to call after reaching home, you know about me, right? Anyway, just came to see if you are asleep. Good night dear. Sleep well."

"Yes Papa."

"And yes. You played extremely well. I am so proud of you." Shashi gave his daughter a tight hug before placing a kiss on her forehead.

"Thanks Papa. Good night."

----------------

Arnav switched on his laptop when his cell phone rang and he was surprised to see the name that flashed on the caller ID.

"Khushi? Is everything alright?"

"Yeah! I am sorry, did I wake you up?"

"No no! I slept well through the day and now jet lagged, can't sleep. But why are you not asleep?"

"I wanted to thank you for the book. That's one book I have been looking to add to my collection for a long time."

"Please don't mention Khushi. I am glad you liked it and that it was something you don't have already"

"Don't pretend Arnav. Payal told me that you called her to find out the genre of my interest and the books in my library. You could have asked me directly."

"Certainly. But I would have missed a chance on two things had I done that."

"And that would be?"

"Seeing the look of surprise on your face and having the honor of receiving a call."

When that was met with silence and totally unaware that the receiver was blushing like a tomato, Arnav continued. "By the way, I didn't get a chance to tell you that I was totally enthralled by your music. You were simply out of this world."

"Oh you are exaggerating Arnav."

"Not at all. The entire family couldn't stop talking about it and I am sure that how it is going to be for a few more days to come."

"I was already nervous and the fact that you sing so well only increased it. I just wanted to get the notes right."

"You are kidding. You are a pro Khushi. I am sure you have it in you to make it big in the musical arena, if you wish."

"That is such a nice thing to say. But that's a long way to go."

"I am sure it is. But you have an advantage of a great family to support you."

"Yes, that's right. Arnav, thanks for everything."

"Don't embarrass me Khushi. Its nothing compared to what you people are doing."

"In difficult times I had a loving family and financial status to meet the needs of my condition. Not many have that privilege. It was that thought that drove papa and bhaiyya to start this. But it is philanthropists like you who help us to achieve our goals."

"Khushi, its nothing, okay? Now listen, as much as I want to continue this conversation, I do know that you must be very tired and moreover it's quite late. You should sleep now. I may visit SPARC sometime next week. Lets meet then."

"Okay Arnav, Good night."

"Good night, Khushi."

Arnav ended the call and leaned back on his recliner closing his eyes and going over the conversation he just had.

What prompted her to call so late in the night? Was is just the book? Is it possible that I make her heart flutter just the way she makes mine? Or am I overthinking? May be she was just being courteous. If that's the case, why couldn't she wait till morning to call me?

His thoughts shifted to the conversation he had with Shashi. Amidst a lot of interruption from the guests, he had managed to gather what Shashi meant by Khushi's blindness being in the brain and not in the eye. And that brought him back to the task he was involved in when he received Khushi's call and went back to his laptop. He opened a google search page and keyed in

Traumatic brain injury and cortical blindness

Sorry sorry sorry! I thgt i had already commented after reading the chapter! I guess i missed it somehow!

Whoa! That was some update uttara!! First of all i really liked how you have tried to balance all the four love stories and give equal attention n importance to each one of them. Not only that you give each character, whether its shashi or devyani or mami their own due space n importance. You have developed all of them so well!
In this update Nk la n anjali shyam seemed to have made quite a leap! They have already started dating or almost started if one could say!
Akash n payal have their own style n way! I would love to see Akash charming his way in to payal's heart!!

Coming to Arnav khushi! Well they are taking their own sweet time, but their case is more sensitive n delicate than the others! Anyway i have to say i loved how Arnav fulfils his personal responsibilities and professional commitments n balances both of them! Like even after coming from a hectic business tour, he made time to attend intern farewell party, before heading towards SPARC function, in between meeting his nani and mama-mami n taking them to the function! I really liked this side of his!!

Now as guptas-raizadas-sharmas have met each other n have already become quite fond of each other, they wont waste a single moment n start matchmaking!

And coming to khushi's performance, one could feel the beauty of her music, of her piece from the way you have described it! I really liked the way you have described that musical piece by Nk khushi n madan!!
So khushi's vision has more to do with brain injury than actual damage to the eye! So her chances of gaining eye sight from operation become more probable???
Lets see what happens next n how arnav khushi take forward their relationship!!
Once again sorry for the late reply and thank you for that mention in your note and raising my point through Arnav's pov!

Hello wonderful people !!

First of all, thank you so much for your overwhelming response for Arnav-Akash bromance
A special thanks to Nandz for her critical analysis and detailed discussion about human mind and emotional challenges.
Thank you all for your wishes for my recovery. I am fit and fine once again.
I thank each and everyone of you who never fail to make me feel special through your 'likes' and comments.
A warm welcome to new readers. I hope you enjoy this journey.
For some strange reason, I couldn't incorporate the youtube player in my update and had to settle down for the link. I sincerely hope that you feel the impact that was intended.
My inspiration to portray Khushi as a violinist came from
The fundraiser programme was conceived from my own experience when I was a part of an NGO and through some help from internet resources.
I thank Dee_J for the banner. I don't know how that girl puts up with me. She is a sweetheart.
I miss some of my friends very much, they are busy in their AD. V and Minty 🤗
Having said that, its my turn for a well deserved vacation. I am going away for 5 weeks to my parents place and wont be active on IF until my return. Writing an update is next to impossible. That's the reason I gave a long update. I am sure many of you would be going on vacation too. Have fun !!
I wish a very happy birthday to my friends,
Skiran, CrazyDollAnandi, nishu_shorna, POTATOROX, Celinawalter and pinkwahlefish
who will be celebrating their birthdays before I come up with the next update.
