Chapter 4 - Revisiting the Past Finally...
It was a humid summer's night. The rain had decided to stop for some time and the fire flies were peacefully floating outside the entrance of Sanjeevani. How beautiful!!! Asad thought to himself as he saw those emitting small rays of colored green light. They looked like mini lanterns floating in the cobalt blue sky.
Asad had reached the worn out bench which Rashid was sitting on. Rashid moved aside on the seat and made space for Asad to sit. The two men both so different in many ways though linked by blood; a father who craved for his son the whole life and the son who hated his father the whole life, for the first time in their lives were actually going to have a decent conversation which didn't involve being sneer to one another. They sat as acquaintances. Little did they knew that after this conversation their relationship was gonna be changed forever.
After a silent ten minutes of watching aimlessly into the scene of serenity of the floating lights in the sky, Rashid broke the silence as he knew Asad was worn out and in no state to start the conversation. Not that Rashid himself was any better, but he could comprehend with Asad' state of mind. After all he is also a father.
Rashid: "Asad... before I begin, I just want to say that I can understand what frame of mind you are currently facing."
Asad sat their mum not knowing what to say. Did Janab Rashid Ahmed Khan actually understand what pain is? Did he really know what was going on in Asad's mind when he didn't care for him ever in his life? Did he know how it felt to not be able to stop those merciful cries for help that were replaying in his head? Did he know? Did he really have a heart? Could anybody understand? However, there was an edge of genuineness and a hint of sincerity to his tone of speaking that made Asad believe otherwise.
Rashid: "It's tough. Tough to watch the ones you love most in pain. A pain so severe, so strong so cruel that you feel secluded you feel like a recluse in your life. You feel helpless as if you have entered a state of paralysis and there is nothing you can do to escape and help"
For the first time in the duration of the whole conversation Asad looked up at Rashid in disbelief. Rashid had stated in words so coherently and so true exactly as to how Asad was feeling at present situation.
Rashid saw Asad looking at him. Asad's expression conveyed a quizzical look of disbelief.
For the first time in his life Rashid Ahmed Khan was about to reveal the story of the past. The past which changed everything in his life and spoiled all the relationships. The past from which he has always been running; but it was time to face the past, finally. He started the story straight away and got straight to the point.
"17 saal pehle gudiya factory me jis aurat ki maut hui thi wo Zoya ki ammi thi."
These seventeen words spoken by Rashid turned Asad's expression to mock horror. Rashid witnessed the change in Asad's face but nevertheless continued.
"Asad... mai nahi janta tha ki Zoya ki ammi us factory me thi. Siddiqui sahib aur Razia ne mujhe us factory ko aag lagane ke liye kaha aur maine bina kuch soche aag laga di. Mai nahi jaanta tha ki us gudiya factory ke saath maine apne chote se parivaar ko bhi aag laga di hai. Aag lagakar mai jab laut raha tha tab maine ek bachchi ki chikhe suni. Ammi... bachao... ammi... bacho... ammi...'"
Asad froze listening that. He remembered Zoya and her nightmares. Rashid recalled the incident and had tears in his eyes.
"mai andar gaya aur maine us bachchi ko bacha liya. Mai use bahar lekar aa raha tha par wo bachchi meri godi se dusri taraf jane ki koshish kar rahi thi aur bus "Ammi... aag...Ammi...bachao..." keh rahi thi. Jab maine us taraf dekha to mai..."
Rashid could not speak as he recalled the deadly sight in front of him. A lady lying down in unconscious state.
"mai us aurat ko bachane jane hi wala tha jab ek aag ka lakda aakar mere saamne gir gaya. Wo bachchi behosh ho chuki thi tab tak. Mai use bahar lekar aaya aur maine Siddiqui sahib aur Razia ko iske bare me bataya. Wo log ghabra gaye aur unhone mujhse kaha ki maine ek aurat ko zinda jala diya. Unhone saara iljaam mujh par laga diya. Maine us aurat ko bahar nikalne ki koshish ki par tab tak uski saanse ruk chuki thi. Par meri is koshish ne Razia ko photos khichne ka mauka de diya. Us bachchi ko Razia lekar chali gayi aur mujhe sab bhul jane ke liye keh diya gaya. Mai Najma ke saath ghar laut aaya. Par mai nahi janta tha ki wo photos, wo gudiya factory ki aag sab ek saazish ka hissa the. Un photos ke balbute par mujhe barbaad karne ki saajish ki thi. Agar us waqt mai Shireen se Nikah nai karta to wo mujhe jail bhej dete aur Dilshad aur tum dono ke saath bahot bura suluk karte. Maine wahi kiya jo us waqt mujhe sahi laga. Apne parivaar ko bachana."
Asad kept mum. He couldn't imagine his life without Zoya. What if Zoya had died that day? Although Rashid didn't say that the girl was Zoya but he knew it. He knew it that somewhere his father has been a savior for Zoya. Although he hated his father but he couldn't thank him enough for saving Zoya that night.
"wo bachchi..."
"Zoya thi..."Asad completed the sentence with tears in his eyes.
Rashid gave a faint smile. "Maine kabhi nahi socha tha ki wo bachchi Zoya ho sakti hai."
Both men were sitting in silent for a moment when suddenly a boy fell from his bicycle. They were about to get up when his father came and took him over. The boy was crying but his father said him something and he smiled back. His father hugged him and they again went on cycling. Asad recalled one such incident from his life where he fell down but there was nobody to pick him up and he just fisted his hands. Rashid could sense Asad's anger and simply placed his hand over Asad's. For the first time in his life Asad didn't flinch away from Rashid's hold.
After some time Rashid's expression dropped and he looked sullen. Asad sensed foreboding. He knew what Rashid was about to say next it would not be pleasant. Rashid continued.
"lekin mai galat tha Asad... 17 saal se ek jhoot ko sach mankar chal raha tha. Ek aisa jhoot jisne rishto ke maiyne badal diye. Us raat Zoya ki ammi ki maut aag ki wajah se nahi hui thi. Wo pehle hi mar chuki thi. Razia ne Zoya ki ammi ka khoon kar diya tha and phir mujhe us gudiya factory ko aag lagan eke liye kaha. Ye sab saazish thi, Gaffur Ahmed Siddiqui aur Razia Siddiqui ki. Mujhe fasakar humesha unke dabao me rakhne ki. Maine kabhi kisi ko nahi maara, jo bhi gunah kiye wo Gaffur aur Razia ne hi kiye." Rashid had never ever thought in his life that he was always living with a fear which was just a disguise.
Asad had a stoic expression on his face. The picture was clear in his mind now. Razia killed Zoya's ammi because she was Siddiqui sahib's 1st wife. She also didn't care for Zoya and so she didn't bother to take her out of the building. And Gaffur Ahmed Siddiqui who claimed to love his elder daughter has been involved in this conspiracy. He couldn't believe that a person can stoop so low. He claims that he loved his daughter and always craved for her but he never had heart to confess what he had done 17 yrs. back. He abandoned his own daughter. The same daughter who searched for her abbu all her life. Silent tears seeped Asad's eyes as everything flashed in front of his eyes.
On the other hand strangely enough Rashid was not crying as he looked once again into the cobalt blue sky. Rashid has been feeling light after confessing everything to Asad. He was relieved now; he could die now with less guilt.
A pair of eyes unnoticed by the duo, who listened the whole conversation, just ran away from there.
Rashid: "It's strange Asad. Life takes numerous twists and turns just make sure you know your role in how to handle them. I have always been so weak throughout my life. But I feel happy when I see my children. They are not me. You are as strong as Dilshad and my other children are all as strong as you. I failed as a father for you but I know you never will. You have already raised Najma & Ayaan. More than me they consider you as their Abbu. I cannot see the future as to what will happen to Adya, but what I can say is whatever happens, happen for the best Asad. You and Zoya will get through this crisis, as long as you stick together. Everything will be okay."
After a long silence Asad said softly, "You saved my both the Angels by risking your life and I don't know how I will ever repay you..." Asad's voice trailed off... He looked down in the grass as his shoulders slouched low.
Rashid: "Asad...Zoya and Adya ko bachana mera farz hai. Meri bhi bachchiya hai wo dono. I could not see history repeat itself. Us din mai Zoya ki ammi ko bacha nai paya aur agar aaj mai in dono ko nahi bacha pata to Allah Tallah se kabhi najre nahi mila pata. I couldn't see you breakonce more and that too because of me. Mere bus me jo tha maine kiya. Baki sab ab Allah ke haath me hai. Hum bus dua kar sakte hai ki Allah rehem kare."
Asad was sitting still and Rashid was staring at his son. He knew he was breaking inside. He wanted to hug his son but he knew he don't have the right. He just kept his hand on his shoulder.
"Shukriya...Ab...Abbu..." Rashid couldn't believe what he heard just. One word "Abbu", he has always been craving to listen that from Asad. He closed his eyes, looked above and thanked Allah for this. He hugged Asad finally without fearing about Asad's reaction. For his surprise, Asad hugged him back and simply stayed there in his Abbu's embrace.
A pair of eyes watching this from the glass window had tears in his eyes. He has always wanted his Abbu and Bhaijaan to re-unite and it had happened, finally. He wiped the tears in his eyes and turned around to see Zoya sleeping. He bent down near her and kissed her forehead, "Thanks my Darling Bhabhi..."
"Go Ayaan... I'm here with Aapi", said Humeira with wet eyes. She knew how much Ayaan has always craved for this, to see his abbu and bhaijaan unite. She knew he wants to be there with them to share this.
Ayaan looked at Humeira and smiled. He got up and hugged her tight. "Thanks Humeira Begum..."
Ayaan ran downstairs and hugged his family from behind.
Asad Ahmed Khan &Ayaan Ahmed Khan felt complete finally.
Humeira watching this from the same glass window wiped her tears and moved to Zoya. She never in her wildest dream had ever thought that her ammi and abbu could be murderers. They have always been her role model.
She recalled Rashid's words -
"Ye sab saazish thi, Gaffur Ahmed Siddiqui aur Razia Siddiqui ki. Mujhe fasakar humesha unke dabao me rakhne ki. Maine kabhi kisiko nahi maara, jo bhi gunah kiye wo Gaffur aur Razia ne hi kiye."
Humeira was coming back from the garden after ending her call with Nuzhat informing her about Adya's condition and telling her to take care of Badi Bi when she heard -
"17 saal pehle gudiya factory me jis aurat ki maut hui thi wo Zoya ki ammi thi."
She stopped in her tracks hearing that. She remembers her abbu saying to Zoya when he 1st met her...
"Aapki ammi ki maut accident me hui thi aur mujhe yahi bataya gaya tha ki unhe koi bachchi nahi mili. Maine bahot koshish ki par tum mujhe kabhi nahi mili."
After listening to the complete truth she ran inside controlling her tears. When she entered the waiting room, she saw Ayaan kissing Zoya's forehead & thanking her.She felt a tug in her heart.
She came back to present sensing Zoya's movement. She patted her forehead so that she doesn't wake up. Her thoughts took form of words and she started talking to herself.
"ammi...abbu...sab barbaad kar diya aapne. Mere ammi abbu ki wajah se Rashid Abbu ka parivaar toot gaya. Ayaan aur Asad jiju ko jo takleefe hui sab unki wajah se. Aapi ki takleefo ka karan bhi mere ammi abbu hai. Ghinn aati hai mujhe, apne aapko aapki beti kehte hue...", she was sobbing by now.
"abbu ne Zoya Aapi se jhoot kaha...jhoot kaha ki unki ammi ka aur unka accident hua tha... jab ki sach to ye hai ki...", she closed her eyes unable to say the words.Tears continuously flowing from her eyes.
"kya hai sach, Humeira...???"
Humeira was startled hearing the voice. She thought that Zoya was sleeping but Zoya had already heard everything. Humeira turned around to face Zoya. She was already broken and if she knows the truth of her past, she will be damaged. Humeira knew how much Zoya has always craved for her abbu. She remembered the day when Zoya and Abbu met finally. She was very happy knowing that Zoya was her aapi now. And same goes for Zoya. She was beyond happy meeting her family finally. But now if she tells the truth her aapi will be broken beyond repair. Already her niece is fighting for her life inside and she can't see Zoya breaking down. Also she feared that if Zoya got to know that her ammi was killed by Razia, she will hate her also. She didn't want to loose Zoya. So she composed herself ready to tell a lie.
But before she could say anything, "Humeira... jhoot bolne ki koshish bhi mat karna. Tum jaanti ho ki tum jhoot nahi bol pati ho..."
Humeira knew it was now or never. So she decided to reveal the truth she heard outside. As soon as the conversation was done, both the sisters were in tears holding onto each other.
"Aapi...I...I...am...Sor...Sorry...Aaa...Aapiii...Aaa...Aaap...Mu...Mujh...Mujhse...Naf...Nafrat...to..." Humeira tried speaking the broken words but was stopped when Zoya hugged her tight and whispered, "I love you Humeira...kabhi sochna bhi mat ki mai tumse nafrat karungi...jo kuch bhi hua usme tumhari koi galti nahi thi...tumhe sorry kehne ki jarurat bhi nahi hai...ye sab to ab...abbuu..."
Zoya could not speak further. She never thought that her past was so painful.
Both the sisters stayed there in each other's warmth trying to gain strength from the other.
The brothers watching them through the door smiled a little and went forward for a group hug. Zoya Asad Ahmed Khan and Humeira Ayaan Ahmed Khan felt home finally.
Nikhat and Najma had tears in their eyes watching the scene unfold before them. They shared a knowing smile because this has never happened since that incident that the brothers hugged properly. And this was just a cheery on the top, a family hug. Imran and Farhan side-hugged their better halves assuring them that everything would be fine again.
On the other side of the corridor, Dilshad and Shireen in the prayer room of the hospital were praying for Adya.
Rashid Ahmed Khan watching his family felt complete finally.
