Have no idea about how it is calculated but it's determined from a device called people's meter attached to the TV sets of only 800 households in only 16 cities.

So that leaves out millions of other households and rural areas as well.Needless to say it's a highly flawed method because 800 households watching a program is no measure of a show's actual viewership and in turn it's popularity.

Why it is much hyped?Because corporate sponsorship=Revenues for the channel depend on it.And sponsors decide on which program to sponsor based on the TRP figures.

Now why do companies decide on sponsorship based on TRPs calculated from mainly urban based households.Because urban people=more purchasing power.They constitute major consumer base of the companies.

Hence the "IMPORTANCE" of the TRPs.
