In many western countries, single men and women adopt pets and shower love and care on them. But in India, the tradition is vansh ko aage badna. To carry the family name forward and sometimes it should also be their son's blood and genes. And the entire burden and guilt falls one the hapless woman. It is not enough for her to produce a child but it should also be male child in most cases.
I can see Kanchan's problems complicated if the surrogate mother starts claiming the child or blackmailing for more money. Better Kanchan divorce the man who seems to be rather soft and who may not stand up against parental pressure. She can pursue studies, find some career and if destined meet a man who does not mind her being childless.
Adoption in Kanchan's case is out of the question because the mother in law thinks her son is capable of having kids and why he should forego that privilege just to keep Kanchan as his wife. She must be thinking of second marriage for him.
