Look Ash (Ashyagh) had a def, but I can't find which page it is on.
Google will tell you the following- it is about fighting for the equality of sexes which means same standards for men and women. Hence, the way I interpret it is:
- Equal standards for things like trust- Ability to speak up to a man equally
However, if you read other threads, and I mean no sarcasm in this, because I have been told that I am not a feminist because I do not relate to a woman's POV only a man's POV.
I just want Jodha to be equal to Jalal in every which way- her ability to defend her views, her trust, her graciousness to own up to her mistakes.
There is a great post by Anne on this - will try to khoj the link for you but will be online only much later today.
noun
1.the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.
Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, cultural, and social rights for women. This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist advocates or supports the rights and equality of women.
In a very simple manner feminist are those who condone the act of limiting or restricting the females due to their gender. If at all anything is denied to you just because you are a female then to fight it is being feminist. For example, woman used to be expected to be at home and care for children. Woman's place is in the kitchen they used to say. Women were not allowed to work (except in domestic employments) or vote (later in history). So the feminist movements fight it and in lots of issues have won too.
But the world is not completely equal yet. There is still a lot of prejudice against woman. For example when you try for a very senior management level posts, there is always a question of whether a woman can be as objective, precise, ruthless and strong as a man; for woman as still at times thought to be creature of emotion.
My feminist point , as a person fighting for equal rights, is that we woman ought to make the world see we are equal through our conduct and not by lecturing or reasoning on why we are equally good as the man. We need to be able to show that we too can be strong in mind; objective, precise and that we are not emotionally swayed when it comes to decisions. You cannot command respect if playing victim and demanding understanding to your gentle feelings. A feminist is not merely a woman who says; hey you cannot discriminate because of my gender. She is also the woman who says that I am as strong (in mind, because biologically we are not physical equals to the man) and as wise and just as you are.
In the forum, generally I think the idea is that if you are cannot see the plight of Jodha, why she had to do what she had to do, and why Jalal is the root cause of her hurt; then you are not feminist but instead a very patriarchal person.
This to me falls under the category of radical feminism. Radical feminist believe that man cannot be right. They also believe that all of woman problems are caused by man. They do not accept that woman can be a contributing factor or that woman can be wrong. Its rather extreme sect of the feminist movement.
Here is a link to Feminism variants. They are feminist but fighting or highlighting a certain type of point only for example radical feminist and lesbianism. Here is a link with for you
