Hello there,
It's my second thought-provoking topic of the day. This episode really had me thinking about the medical system. I have noticed this trend everywhere (regardless of it being in America or in India). We tend to look so highly at professions such as Doctors or any medical experts. We tend to think that if it came from a doctor than it must be true. I have noticed time and time again that people don't ask question when a guy in lab coat comes up to you and give you a prescription. They may ask what the drug is for, but they never go online to check if that's the right drug because they take the doctor's word for it.
Similarly, I have noticed the same in this show. Kamla told Kalpi in past episodes that the doctor knows what she's talking about when Kalpi tried to ask questions regarding the drug. It was as if there's a blind faith on a person you don't even know. I know and I understand that people trust you because you are a medical specialist and you have done your degree and got your education down. I understand that a medical specialist deserves that! I seriously am not insulting that profession so please try not to get offended and see my point here. I am just saying that no one is perfect or is freed from making mistakes. I know that it's unlikely to make big mistakes in any field because of the consequences one has to suffer for doing the wrong, but it's still possible.
In our society (especially the Desi parents that I know in American) really look up to professions like Doctors and Engineers. There are some other really great profession out there but it seems non-existent to those parents. I am asking this questions now - why is that? Why are these two fields, especially medical field give so much importance to the point that people don't even think of asking questions? Why are we so prone to give in and be submissive to the authority figures that has lab-coats on?
If only Kalpi went deeper somehow or Kamla asked what drug the doctor gave to Raghav's mom, they could have found out if it was the right drug but the didn't. Again I am not criticizing anyone here. I am just saying what I see. It's the same in US. People don't tend to ask questions here either and they end up suffering sometimes. Here, insurance company screw us over when we need treatment of any sort and they don't want to spend that much money so they decide that you're not valuable enough. And then what happens? The person doesn't even know that he/she is getting screwed and just keeps quiet. Why is that? Why don't we ask questions?
In this society, we are supposed to be the revolutionary generation, no? We are the ones who will grow up to become the society tomorrow. So I request to each of you from now on, think about this. Not only that, please ask questions! For all you know, it can save a life or millions of your money. I am not saying just ask question of the treatment from a doctor but from anyone. Doctors are very valued and they should be because they deserve it! But everyone is a human being and anyone can make mistakes. Asking questions can lead to something way more productive in the future. It can solve so many problems and lead to a better government. The children of today become the leaders of tomorrow - so start asking questions before you get into anything serious. It's your right as a human being! You've earned that so you might as well use it.
PS: Sorry if this offended anyone. I am not bashing on medical field or any doctors because I have family members in that field. I highly respect them and I know the commitment needed for that field. I only pointed them out because the show pointed them out. I value engineers and doctors for all their effort but I am just trying to make a point here of what I have seen so far. This relates to any field and extends to the government policies themselves. Hope the thoughts get through.
