Khushi fumbled with a pair of earrings. Shutting her mouth up to prevent any profanity from escaping its confines, Khushi walked to Payal's room, the east side of her room. Khushi had always preferred rooms in the west ward of the house for they have a cool atmosphere that contradicts Delhi's hot climate, and they give a beautiful view for the sunset; a sight to get drawn in and mesmerized by. Knocking for once, Khushi entered Payal's room knowing that she would be standing in front of the big mirror.
"I seem to have an issue with earrings," Khushi groaned standing before an almost ready Payal.
"Hahahaha. Yes you cannot manage wearing them till date," Payal teased, "come."
Shaking her head at the scene she usually makes, Khushi handed Payal the pair of earrings.
"Khushi, can I have your green bracelet? Just for tonight," Payal spoke carefully while putting the second earring in Khushi's right ear.
"Payal..." Khushi sighed.
"I'll be careful this time," Payal interrupted.
It is not like Khushi does not like giving her sister any of her properities, but she knows how much careless her sister is. Last time Khushi lent Payal a bracelet, Payal had lost it. It was one of Khushi's favourites; and Khushi does not like arguing over things with her sister, so better not give a chance to such arguments. Besides that question, that pops up in her mind almost every day, why cannot people be satisfied with what they have?
"Ok," Khushi agreed almost reluctantly.
Before Khushi could walk out of the room, after thanking Payal for the help, their mother stepped in. "Girls, are you ready?"
"I am, mom." Khushi gave her mom a smile before inquiring about her dad.
"I'll just be ready in two minutes," Payal exclaimed while she was smoothing her hair.
_______
With her arm around her dad's, Khushi walked into the huge hall, where the party was taking place. Payal was on Khushi's right while Garime was on Shashi's other side, holding his hand. Khushi felt proud in such moments; proud to be Shashi's daughter; and proud to be beside him declaring it to the world.
As is he got a glimpse of Khushi's thoughts, Shashi looked at her, giving her a beautiful smile then looked at his wife approvingly, appreciating the way she looked. He winked to Garima earning a nudge on his left arm and a half-heartedly glare that poorly concealed her satisfaction. Madhumati had not agreed to join them, for she does not like the late parties besides the call she had received from her son, made her feel so emotional that she had preferred staying at home and going through his photos album; the album that she keeps in front of her eyes most of the day. Arjun, her son, is a handsome guy of Khushi's age. He had been in Australia for more than two years, studying architectural engineering. He had been to India twice in this period of time.
"Arnav beta." Khushi's ears perked up just like the way one reacts with hearing his or her own name.
"Hello, uncle." Arnav and Sashi hugged briefly. "Hello, everyone. It is nice to see you." Arnav flashed a handsome smile, making his face look all the more gorgeous; a beau, that is what he is.
Garima stood with them while Khushi and Payal walked to Anjali and Mami; the former had been missing parties recently as she had not been to any for few months while the latter could not miss a party she was invited to. Anjali noticed how Payal's eyes kept glancing towards Akaash, who was standing with Shyam and a client at a distance.
The Party, which was held to celebrate the launching of a new brand for the Singhania's, was planned and organized with a grand that showed a pleasant luxury and spoke of a huge wealth.
For Arnav, such parties meant meeting clients, and for Khushi they were a chance to have fun, meet acquaintances and spend some time with Sanjana Singhania, the only daughter of the family which had three sons.
"Excuse me," Arnav excused himself from a client he had been talking with for a long time. He walked to the outside garden, which was opened to the hall. The garden was decorated beautifully with a gazebo at the end of it. Arnav walked there seeking some fresh air. The soft, soothing music was fading behind him as he neared his destination.
He was not surprised to see Khushi for he had been slightly surprised that she joined her family this time.
"I have not expected to have the pleasure of seeing you tonight, Gupta?"
Khushi flinched hearing his voice so suddenly, but she recovered instantly. "Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the pleasure part, Raizada."
"Why am I not surprised? Tell me, how could you have the heart to leave your precious books behind to be among 'noisy people'?"
Elegance.
Arnav's gaze intently checked Khushi out from head to toe, appreciating the vision in front of him. She was wearing a chiffon, floor length, green dress which hugged her figure gracefully.
'Green, Scarlet?'
Green is her colour; it intensifies the hazel-ness of her eyes, wonderfully making their colour shines clearer; her eyes were outlined with a thin line of eyeliner. Her hair was tied in a bun leaving a loosened strand. The only jewelery she had worn were the earrings.
"Was someone speaking?" Khushi asked.
"No. Just... some lips and a tongue were moving. Does this produce a voice? Oh! We still need teeth and other organs to... you know...produce a voice, right Gupta?"
'No. Just...a husky voice.' Her mind provided. Scolding herself for crossing such thoughts, Khushi turned abruptly, her back was facing Arnav. The sudden, not-so-gentle turn resulted in getting her right earring attached to the loosened strand of hair.
"Ah!" Khushi tried to fix the problem, but mistakenly, she took the earring off. "Oh, no." Khushi groaned.
"Kya hua?"
Dammit! Khushi silently cursed, not only because of the earring issue, but also because when Arnav speaks in Hindi, his voice turns huskier, and she cursed again for noticing that.
Khushi realized that the hair bun could not hide that an earring was missing. Praying for some luck, Khushi tried to slip the piece in her ear, but she miserably failed. Thus, Khushi thought of taking off the other one. Her hands halted in the air as Arnav stood in front of her.
"Let me." His tone altered.
Khushi felt tongue-tied. She allowed him without uttering a word or even merely nodding. Her silence was all the reply he got, and he took it as an approval. Gently, Arnav took the earring from her hand. Taking a step forward, he moved the strand of hair that teased him, touching her cheek softly in the process. The tantalizing touch urged Khushi to close her eyes. His breath scanned her face and neck as he leaned closer to her ear, before it fanned her ear. Arnav drank in her scent as he momentarily closed his eyes, relishing the moment. Her breath hitched, and her chest heaved.
Torture.
It was a moment of torture for both of them. While he had never denied that, she, surprising herself, felt it for the first time; a pleasant, sweet torture.
Why do I feel this way? Do not I hate his proximity?
But the moment ended too quickly for their liking as Khushi felt the loss of Arnav's warmth when he stepped backwards. She had not realized it when the earring slipped in her earlobe. Her concentration had been elsewhere: the touch, the breath, the warmth, the scent...him.
He had no tongue to tease her and she had no senses to stay there. Thus, Khushi headed back to the party and Arnav followed her after ten minutes, in which he had tried to calm himself down.
_______
Khushi restlessly tossed on her bed, in an unsuccessful attempt to block certain thoughts from her mind; the thoughts of some deep gaze, a sensuous touch and an intoxicating scent. She had sought some help from her books, but they could not offer any. Even a cold shower had failed to cause a change.
What I have been waiting for?
Khushi closed her eyes, trying not to remember that day. But how can someone remember what is unforgettable?

The next chapter will have a flashback or two, and hopefully I'l be able to reveal the past.
