Salman – This Khan Can, But… By Ali Peter John, MovieTalkies.com, 8 May 2007 |
He may be an amazing and absolutely brilliant actor, an astonishing all-rounder who has groomed himself all on his own, but all that unfortunately gets covered up, not taken note of, neglected because there seems to be some hubris, something wrong with his own life. A man like Salman Khan. He is undoubtedly one of the finest actors of his generation. I don't have to say it; he has proven it even in the worst of films he has done. Give him any good role and he makes it better, and at times, even brilliant. From Maine Pyar Kiya to Jaan-E-Mann, he has always been good, always lived roles he has been challenged with, played every role sincerely and to the best of his born ability. He is easily one of the most talented actors, one of the top few we have, a fact accepted by some of the greatest thespians like Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, and almost all the leading directors. But then, there is something unfortunately wrong about his life – adventures and misadventures, daring doings and exploits, strong and soft matters of the heart, a series of storms in real life, a heart lacerated by a series of all kinds of storms, unfortunate accidents, a lifestyle he seems to have been destined to be born with – a life which is very difficult to live. And ask all those very close to him, his relatives and close friends, and they can talk to you for hours about the soft man behind the tough exterior. But the sad thing about Salman is that the image he has created in public is not willing to leave him easily. He is still one of the most wanted actors, but sometimes that image which he has created for himself or destiny has designed for him comes in his way and he has not found the place he so richly deserves. If you ask me, he is as good as any of the young Khans in the game, and even better. But what can you do about Sallu, the darling of millions, when he throws off his shirt and does things which young men like him think twice before doing, especially after they have been granted more than what they had desired? Sallu is one of the most adored actors among people of all kinds, women especially. I still see hope for this young man, who is certainly destiny's favourite son. Destiny has done many good things for him, but why doesn't destiny change the real Salman Khan? When will Salman Khan grow up to his full height and become a responsible citizen of the world? This is a voice in concern, a voice that cares. And to think of it so much of what Salman can or cannot be depends on the two cases pending against him, the poaching case in Jodhpur and the reckless driving case in Mumbai. Judgment Day is anytime soon. |
