How strange that the worst excesses of caste system were enshrined in law during the time when India was ruled by non-Hindus !! Muslims and Christians !!
peridot , manu's caste system was based on varna (the thought process of a person) and not jati. there are many examples of kings throwing their sons out as considering them to be shudra and similarly many chandaala or lower castes sons have become venered rishis like parashara.
the occupational divide came much later in interpretation , and rigidity insinuated more for convenience in administration rather than reality.
