Recap :
Soon Ruqaiya fed the sweet to Jodha and hers and Maham's plan got successful. After Ruqaiya, the other begums came forward and fed Jodha with the sweets. Obviously they were tasted by Maham Anga before they were fed to Jodha. Jalal looked at his wife with a yearning smile. He felt so happy as his wife and their baby were getting blessed by all.
Soon the function ended and Atgah Sahab gave the vote of thanks to all. Hameeda and Mainawati accompanied Jodha to her chamber. Soon, everybody left the hall with happy faces. Jalal moved to his chamber.
Ruqaiya and Maham were more than delighted as their plan was totally successful. They didn't fear the repercussions (outcomes) of this act as they knew what they had to do further. They celebrated their own success in Ruqaiya's chamber.
Chapter 22 -
1 Week Later:
Morning was as much mournful as it had been from past one week. She rested on her bed. Her face was very pale and dull. Enough of tears had streamed out of her eyes. She had cried so inconsolably and pitifully that her tears, by now, had almost dried off. She had been through unimaginable and beyond belief pain in this whole while and the hurt didn't seem to cease. The very little hopes that she was slowly developing for him had died off brutally when she had received his message after she had had her worst nightmare, her miscarriage. Life had been horrendous and cruel for poor Jodha. One thing that she still didn't understand was, why after sending such heart breaking message, did he come to her chamber to console her or to care for her.
Hameeda Bano entered the room with bowl of soup in her hand. She was astonished and rendered speechless after witnessing her daughter's state. When Hameeda got to know about this news in the morning, she knew how broken Jodha would be. But actually seeing her was a devastating sight. Jodha had grown very weak and fragile, both physically and mentally, after the accident. Hameeda came and sat next to her.
As soon as Jodha saw her, she broke down once again. She was seeing her Ammi-Jaan after one whole week and her tears were out of her eyes in no time. Hameeda kept the bowl on the side-table and hugged Jodha tightly. Jodha clutched to her like she was the only source of life for her. Hameeda took Jodha in her embrace and caressed her back until Jodha stopped sobbing.
"Aap kahan chali gayin thin Ammi-Jaan", asked a weeping Jodha with her throat being constantly choked by the heart rending emotions. She continued "Hum bilkul akele pad gaye the.. Us durghatna (accident) ke baad humare paas koi nahi tha.. hum jeena nahi chahte Ammi-Jaan.. ab humare paas jeena ka koi kaaran nahi hai"..
Hameeda rubbed her back so as to bring her to a comfort zone. Hameeda was surprised by her words but she kept quiet as she wanted her to pour out all her feelings first. After a few minutes, Jodha could overcome her tears. She wiped them off and broke the hug.
"Humein muaf kar dijiye Jodha beta..Aapke asli gunahgaar to hum hain.. Humein aapko is tarah bina bataye jiyarah (prayers) karne nahi jaana chahiye tha.. humein laga tha ke hum aapke aur aapke bache ke liye dua karne jayenge aur sab thik ho jayega.. lekin aaj subah jab hum vapas aaye.. tab humein Moti Bai ne sab bataya.. Hum bata nahi sakte Jodha beta ki humare dil par kya guzar rahi hai.. hum apna dukh to seh sakte hain lekin aapko be-intehaan dard mein nahi dekh sakte.." apologized Hameeda with folded hands.
Jodha held her hands and said, " Nahi Ammi-Jaan.. is mein aapki koi galti nahi hai.. dukh to humein is baat ka hai ki Kanhaa humse humari saari khushiyaan cheen lete hain.."
She couldn't say any word further and leaned back on her bed. Hameeda knew she was not well and she took the bowl of soup back in her hands. Hameeda tried to feed Jodha the soup she had brought but Jodha respectfully declined it. She was in no mood to eat anything.
Hameeda knew she was very weak and that, she needed to be strong after this mishap.
"Jodha beta...Humare liye to thoda saa kha lijiye.. aap behad kamzor pad gayin hain.. Aap humari bahadur beti hain.. aap aise nahi toot saktin.. aur beta.. jo hota hai ache ke liye hota hai.. fikar mat kijiye.. aur pata hai aapko ke Jalal bhi kitne..." as she was about to say anything further, Jodha cut her in between.
"Unka naam mat lijiye Ammi-Jaan.." said Jodha annoyingly. She didn't want to hear his name or talk about him.
"Par kyon beta.. vo bhi to buri tarah toot chuke hain.. humnein unki haalat dekhi hai.. unki aankhon mein to aasoon bhi nahin hain..aisa lag raha hai jaise Jalal ne saara dard apne andar samet liya hai.."
"Aansoon kyon honge bhala unki aankhon mein.. humein to laga tha ki unhe apne kiye ka sach mein pachtavaa hai..lekin nahi.. hum bilkul sahi the pehle.. aise log chaahkar bhi nahi badal sakte.. unke bare mein hum jitna kam kahein utna hi behtar hain...humnein aaj tak itna gira hua insaan apni zindagi mein nahi dekha.. jo unhone humare saath pehle kiya so kiya.. humnein unki aankhon mein dard dekha tha.. unki aankhon mein unke bachche ke liye pyaar bhi dekha thaa.. isliye hum dheere dheere unke bare mein apni soch badalne lage the..lekin unhone jo us durghatna ke baad kiya.. usse hum kabhi nahi bhool sakte.. kyon unhone humaare saath aisa kiyaa...kyon.." she broke down silently with evident anguish in her voice.
Hameeda was shocked to listen to her words. She didn't know what Jodha was hinting at.
"Aisa kyaa kar diya unhone Jodha beta.. humein bataiye..Kyonki jahan tak humein pata hai.. Vo bhi buri tarah se toot chuke hain.. phir bhi humein Salima begum ne bataya ki vo aapke hojre mein har roz aate the.. aapka khayaal rakhne.." asked Hameeda in a worried tone.
"Huh..Khyaal rakhne.. kya aap jaanti hain Ammi-Jaan.. ki us durghatna ke baad humare paas koi nahi aaya tha.. balki agle hi din unki ek Begum humare paas aayin thin..aur humse kaha tha.. ki ab hum maa nahi bane wale hain to humara koi wajood nahi hain.. Shahenshah humari shakl bhi nahi dekhna chahte.. aur unhone humein is Mahal se chale jaane ko kaha tha.. Aap humein bataiye Ammi Jaan.. Kya Shahenshah bas apne bachche ke liye humse maafi maang rahe the.. kya sirf apne bachche ke liye itna bada dhong kiyaa unhone humare saath.. Un Begum ki baat sunkar humara dil toot gaya Ammi-Jaan.. Humein Shahenshah se koi umeed thi bhi nahin lekin dil ke ek kone mein ek aas thi ki Shahenshah aisa nahi bol sakte.. Lekin Jab do din tak Shahenshah humse ek baar bhi poochne nahi aaye ki hum kaise hain.. humara haal kaisa hai.. phir humein vishwaas ho gayaa.. ki aise Jallad kabhi nahi badal sakte.. Humein Kshama kijiyega Ammi-Jaan par hum aapke bete ko ab kabhi bhi kshama nahi kar payenge." said Jodha in a distressed tone..
Hameeda was shocked to her core after hearing all this. Her eyes were wide open. Before she could say something, Jodha continued.
"Aur phir do din baad.. Vo humare kaksh mein aaye.. Hakim Sahiba ke saath.. humara khayal poochne.. Pata hai Ammi Jaan.. humein apne oopar hasi aa rahi thi us waqt.. ki Kanhaa ne naa jaane kaun se janam ka badlaa liya humse aise insaan se shaadi karwakar.. Hum unki taraf dekhnaa bhi nahi chahte the.. Phir bhi vo humare paas aakar baith gaye.. aur Hakim Sahiba humari jaanch karne lagin.. Humara gussa akhiri seema par thaa.. humein vishwaas nahi ho raha tha ke aisa vyakti itna kuch bolkar humare saamne aa bhi kaise sakta hai.. Lekin.." before Jodha could proceed, Hameeda stopped her in between.
"Nahii Jodha Beta.. Nahi.. aapko koi bahut badi galat fehmi huyi hai.. Aisa ho hi nahi saktaa.. Aapko pata bhi hai Jashn ke baad kyaa hua thaa.. Humein pata hai aapne Jashn wali raat ko hi apne maata pitaa ko wapas Amer bhej diyaa thaa..kyonki aap unhe aur der dekhtin to aap apne dukh ko aur nahi chupa paatin.. Hum ache se ye baat samajh sakte hain.. lekin Jodha Beta.. uske baad.. jab agle din ki subha hui hi thi..ki hum aapko bina bataye dua karne ke liye nikal gaye.. Humein pata tha ki Jalal aapke paas rahenge.. Lekin jab aaj subha hum vaapas aaye to Moti Bai ne humein aapke baare mein bataaya aur Salima Begum ne humein Jalal ke baare mein bataya.. Jodha beta.. Jalal ko ussi subha aapaatkaalin (emergency) jung(war) mein jaana tha.. unhone ye baat kisiko bhi nahi bataayi thi..varna dushmano ke kaan khade ho jaate.. Aap unhe galat samajh rahin hain Beta.. unhe to jaise hi jung mein khabar mili ki ab unka bachcha nahi raha.. Vo turant yahaan daude chale aaye.. (Hameeda's voice was breaking with tears as she cleared Jodha's doubt, but suddenly her voice was full of anger when she recalled about what Jodha had just said) Humein ye bataiye Jodha Beta.. ki kis Begum ne aapse itni ghinoni baat kari.. Hum abhi unse jaakar baat karte hain" said Hameeda.
But Jodha was not even listening to her last bits as she was dumbfounded after knowing the truth from Hameeda.
She went back into the flashback.
*Flashback starts - 2 days after the miscarriage*
Jalal's eyes were teary as he ran to her room. He knew she must be broken by now. As soon as he entered her room, he saw her lying on the bed, looking totally lifeless and pale..and her eyes open.
She could feel his presence. She rolled her eyes towards the door and was shocked to see him there. Her heart was full of fire seeing him. She so much hated his face. She hated him for what he was.
Before Jalal could move forward to her, she bursted out loudly," Vahin Ruk jaiye Shahenshah.. Bheetar mat aaiyega.." her voice full of rage.
Jalal knew she must be broken and angry with him. But he was adamant in his decision. He came inside with Hakim Sahiba and asked her to initiate her treatment on Jodha. He came and sat beside her.
Jodha was surprised. She laughed sarcastically in her heart after seeing his fake concern.
Jodha kept quiet as Hakim Sahiba did her job. As soon as Hakim Sahiba gave her the medicines and left the room, Jodha knew what she had to do.
Even before Jalal could say a word, She clutched his collar and screamed out on him, looking directly into his eyes. She had had enough of this man. What the hell did he think of her? She had kept quiet for a long time but today he needed his dose.
"Kyon...Ab kyon aayein hain..Kyon khel khel rahein hain aap humare saath.. kyaa hum koi khilona hai..ki jab man chaaha tod liya..marod liya.. aur jab man bhar gayaa to ghar se uthaake phek diyaa.. (She tightened her grip over his collar and continued) Lekin ab aur nahi.. humein vishwaas nahi hota ke aap apni shakl humein dikhaa bhi kaise sakte hain.. Aapse nafrat to humein pehle se hi thi.. lekin dheere dheere hum apna man badalne lage the.. par aapne jo dhong humare saath kiyaa hain na Shahenshah.. uske liye to Kanhaa bhi aapko kabhi kshamaa nahi karenge.." Her voice was not only full of anguish and pain but tears as well.
Jalal was shocked to listen to her words. He couldn't say any word. He himself was poorly broken after knowing that they have lost their baby. His throat didn't seem to support him.
He knew he was at fault to have come to her so late but what she was speaking about him was totally wrong. He failed to understand at what Jodha was hinting at but what he knew for sure was that she had some misunderstanding about him. This time, he looked into her eyes and tears rolled down his eyes.
He freed himself from her clutches and said in a teary voice ," Aap aaram kar lijiye.. Humein chalnaa chahiye..".
"Hahah.. ho gaya dhong puraa.. Hum Ammi-Jaan se keh denge ki aap humara haal poochne aaye the..bas.. ab aur natak ki zarurat nahi hain.. aur haan.. Hum is Mehal se jaayenge ya nahi.. Vo aapka nahin..Ammi-Jaan ka nirnay (decision) hoga.." laughed Jodha sarcastically.
Jalal was like what. What is she talking about? He was completely broken after her brutal words. He quietly left her room asking her to take care.
*3 days after Miscarriage*
Jodha's health was not good. Neither was she eating anything, nor was she crying anymore. She had confined herself to one corner of her room. She had even stopped doing Kanhaa's pooja for her belief over him had shaken terribly.
Jalal came to know that her health was deteriorating at a faster pace. He knew she had misunderstood him this time, but clearing out things was not the need of the hour. Her health, her well being was what more important to him.
He entered her room with all the healthy food stuff and saw her sitting in a corner of the room. He asked Moti Bai to leave the room. He moved towards her and sat beside her.
"Jodha Begum.. kuch khaa lijiye.. aapki tabiyat theek nahin hain", he said a very low voice.
She was astounded to see him again in her room. She couldn't believe he was here again. How much she didn't want to see his face, and there he was, visiting her again and again..and that too, with full of fake concern, as she believed.
"Shahenshah aap humein ek hi baar mein maar kyon nahin daalte..?", she said in a low voice, without looking at him.
He was not shocked. Her words only seemed to confirm that she had misunderstood him.
He was hurt badly. His heart was bleeding with pain. Not only had he lost his child, his wife was in such a terrible state in front of him.
He took a morsel of food and moved it towards her mouth. He took care that he was gentle enough in the action.
Jodha had had enough of his presence. After seeing what he was doing, she lost it completely. Then she did something, which left Jalal shocked beyond core.
She slowly removed her dupatta from her upper front body and moved closer to him.
With a very low and stern voice she said ," Hum jaante hain aap ye sab kyon kar rahe hain.. aapki himmat ki humein data deni hogi.. lijiye.. hum prastut hain aapke saamne.. jo aapne humare saath pichli baar humari marzi ke begair kiya thaa.. vo aaj humari marzi se kariye.. lijiye".
A lone tear trickled down Jalal's eyes. He was speechless. He wanted to say something but his voice seemed to fail him. He took back his hand, kept the morsel back in the plate and shouted," Moti Bai.. Moti Bai.. jaldi aaiye".
Moti came running inside the room and Jalal asked her to feed Jodha the food. He got up and moved out of her hojraa in a hurry. He was not only angry but ashamed of himself. Was he so bad that Jodha had thought so low about him?
Jodha saw his reaction but she was least bothered. She had not said something very big, atleast she believed this.
*Flashback ends*
"Jodha beta.. aap kahaan kho gayin..humein bataiye kisne aapse itni ghinoni baat kahi", Hameeda asked shaking her shoulders.
Jodha was shocked beyond core. She had been so wrong. So wrong. She covered her mouth out of shock. A lone tear trickled down her eyes.
