Part 12 The night after

If only there were just Ruhi and Raman and Ishita in their lives things would be so different. Ishita had a day job. Raman had business to run and then they also had Ashok and Shagun in their lives. It did appear that Ashok and Shagun had nothing else to do but to ruin Raman and therefore now Ishita and Ruhi.

When Ishita reached her clinic she realized she had forgotten to get her lunch from her amma that morning. She decided to go on when she saw the crowd in the holding area just outside her clinic. There were kids screaming running and fussing moms. She loved the mornings when she had all these people to help. Dentistry was not her profession it was her prayer and passion. Thinking of passion she thought of Raman and the whole family on the bed after the "trip" last evening. " So filmy" she chided herself "par accha laga" she blushed as she pushed her clinic door open. She convinced herself that it was Ruhi's happiness that made her fly. The Iyer's had to postpone their anniversary party to include Ishita's sister Vandana and Ishita did not even remember the cheerful dinner they had at her mom's place.

Raman was stepping out when Amma called him and asked him if he could pass Ishita her lunch on his way to work. "Sure" he said not having the heart to say no to her. He casually put his arm around her shoulder and asked her "sirf apki beti ke kiye hai ya mere liye bhi hai isme". " Ayyo Raman vegetarian hai yeh tum bhi uske saath bahaite share karo main aur deti hoon" replied amma. "it's ok I was just kidding" he said as he picked the bag from Amma. Raman was thinking of Ishita and Ruhi on him when he got behind the wheel of his car. And the next thing he noticed was his security guard opening the car door for him! He had spent an entire car ride thinking of Ishtia's contours and softness on him. He loved the weight of Ishita and Ruhi on him. He never knew there could be so much happiness in his life. He walked into his office heaving like a teenager who had just managed a stealthy kiss, with a large naughty smile on his face.

Ashok and Shagun had just spent another night partying out till the wee hours of the morning. He was heading to work late in the day. Ashok had just managed to placate Shagun about him not willing to commit to making her his wife by diverting her attention to Aditya. He asked her to get legal adoption papers ready so that Aditya could legally become Ashok and Shagun's and they could remove Raman from Aditya's life. He was sore that he was forced to ride up the service lift in his office building or climb up 24 floors to his office. There was a problem in one of the lifts it was stuck somewhere in the middle and taking the any of the others was not advisable till they were all cleared by the maintenance guys. He would not be caught dead in the lift with all the uniformed cleaners he thought angrily till he heard Dr. Ishita's name.

One of the sharabhi cleaners was sharing his plan to get a "chakaas dentist" into trouble. He told him that his wife was crying in the morning about how his son was really sick after visiting the dentist "Dr Ishita mayur viharwali. mere bete ko na kuch bhimari hai jiske vajah wo dentist thi. Uski haath murodoonga toh bees pacchas hazar to de hi degi sab chup karane vaasthe..." he sniggered. A slow smile crept on Ashok's face. He held his business card out " bacchon ka dard mujhse dehka nahi jaata. Tumhe insaaf zaroor milna chaiye mujhse mere cabin me dus minute me aakar milo. I will help you." he finished wickedly.

Ashok instructed his lawyer to ignite the cleaner who was going to see him soon to slap a suit on Dr.Ishita Iyer for unprofessional behavior and in-competence. The cleaner walked in and Ashok told him to meet with the lawyer and told him "lawyer ki baat math maan tumhare bete ki sawal hai..lakhon se kya milega, bacche ki sehet sabse jyada important hai. Paise ki fikar tum mat karo" he said knowing fully well that the cleaner would never refuse that kind of money. "Ishita you are a dead dentist. Dentist ban kar rehna tumhare liye tho mission hai zindagi ka..now you are going see the shit hit the celling and watch all the badnami that comes with it. Kahin ka nahi choodonga us Raman ko ya tumhe"! he smiled criminally.

Raman stretched like a cat. It was way past his lunch time and he called Mihir over to go out and grab a bite with him. The two guys chatted merrily about work, the contracts that they had bagged and about girls at the restaurant they were eating at, " Bhabhi sunegi to maregi tumhe.." Mihir said. "bhabhi" it struck him that the food Ishita's mom had handed him over was still in his back seat of his car and it was already 3. He reached out to his phone and called Ishita - no answer. He called her office and Ishita's assistant answered over what seemed to be a big fight. " Bus mai bhacche ko treat karke tum se baad me milti hoon.." he heard Ishita screaming in the background. "Rasta chodo aur hath hatao nahi tho ek haath todke doosre haath me de doongi." " Hello chal kya raha hai" probed a concerned Raman. " Sir madam kisi ko daant rahi hai" replied the assistant. "Tumhare security guards to hai na wahan" he asked .." haan sir aur main Dr ko bol doongi ki wo apko call return kare". " Sach me jhansi ki rani hai yaar" he related the story to an incredulous Mihir.

It was close to 9 in the night when Ruhi called him in the office. "Goodnight papa" she said " aap ghar me ho? she asked. " yeh kahan se bol rahi hai?" Raman wondered. Papa aaj na Ishima ki clinic me ek chottu sa baccha bohot bimaar hai..jaise muhje dard hua tha. Iss liye ishima ne paatti se kaha ki main aaj muthu aur mihika aunty ke sath me so jaoon. Mai paati ke yahan hoon" she finished.

Raman wound up for the day and Ishita was still not home. Amma had left dinner for them he noticed. He showered and got to the table made himself a stiff drink and reached for his phone to call Ishita. He was not happy that Ishita was still out especially after all that he heard that afternoon. He would drive up and pick her up he insisted. Ishita convinced him she was just a few minutes away from home.

Raman got a call from Mihika who apologised for calling him so late. She wanted to know if Ishita was already asleep. She also said she was worried that Ishita had not called her all day. " tum behne roz kya baat karti ho?" he asked "appki burayi aur kya" laughed Mihika. "Ruhi ko mai lene aoon. Main ghar me hi hoon" he asked. "Nahi" screamed mihika on the phone wo so gayi hai". Accha teek hai meri bacchi ka kyal rakhna he said and was relieved to see Ishita walk through, she looked tired he noted.

Ishita was all changed and at the table devouring the food when Raman returned after speaking to Mihir about work. He was surprised to see her in a sleevesless tshirt and her hot yoga pants. Her hair was all over her face and her face was scrubbed clean completely naked and glowing he realised. She was smiling a lot through her meal and chatted with Raman quite merrily of dentures and root canal surgeries. Raman was looking for his cocktail and was shocked to see his glass empty. "Ishista tum ne ye pi lee kya" he asked her pointing to the now empty glass. Aapki coke bohot flat thi aap ki tarah but mujhe na pyaas lag rahi thi main doosri laoon" she got off her chair only to stumble.

Raman steadied her and took her to the room. He was thanking his stars that Ruhi was not home. She leaned in on him as she walked with no awkwardness that seemed to be ever present otherwise between them. "Raman" she said do you know how happy I was last night when we all fell on the bed over you. Aaj main bed me so sakti hoon kya". " haan meri ma please ab ye pani peeke so jao" he said tucking her in. He walked quietly over to his side of his bed and was almost asleep when he felt something scratch his nose. " Raman" she whispered " aap kabhi rona mat...uss din DNA report wale din aapko rote huey dekh kar muhje bohot bura laga. Aap jaise kadoos ko na sensitive kabhi dekha nahi na iss liye... aur kuch boloon jante ho aapki sabse acchi baat kya hai.." and she said without finishing the thought she asked " main apke haat pakadke so jaaoon" all he heard was a slight snore even before he could reply.
