Star couples get a lot of attention when together and even more when they break up. Speculations abound and their pain, which is hard enough to cope with in private, becomes public fodder. Despite the media storm and the heartbreak, celebrities find the will to move on in different ways. We look at some of the most famous break-ups over the past few years and tell you how each celebrity coped in the aftermath of their wrecked relationship.

The Star: Deepika Padukone

The Break-up: This break-up was quite a public one. From mum Neetu Kapoor allegedly disliking Deepika to Ranbir's supposed infidelity (which Deepika hinted at in Koffee with Karan) the speculation is vast. Deepika maintained that they were not meant to be in a relationship while Ranbir said, "It's an issue between two individuals, but people work on several theories and then disturb things. Thankfully, we don't carry the baggage of our past because of which we have maintained a healthy friendship." It is commonly alleged that the reason for the separation were the frequent indiscretions Ranbir indulged in while he was still romantically involved with Deepika. So if the basic math is correct...reports hint that it was Ranbir's closeness towards his current girlfriend Katrina that soured the Deepy-RK relationship.

The Aftermath: Depressed, following her break-up with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika planned a vacation in America to take her mind off things. The break-up was allegedly abrupt and messy and Deepy even ganged up with Sonam Kapoor on the sets of Karan Johar's talk show to make a few snide remarks about the junior Kapoor which left his father, Rishi Kapoor fuming and indignant. Deepika didn't remain single for long and started dating the Mallya scion, Siddharth for a while but the relationship fizzled out. She is now supposedly dating Ranveer Singh even though she has publicly denied it. Deepika recently admitted that she spent hours crying after the breakup with Ranbir, and said that it had made her cautious of future relationships.

The Star: Bipasha Basu

The Break-up: After dating for 10 years, John Abraham and Bipasha Basu's romance came to an end. Just when everyone thought the two were going to make it to the altar, they called it quits. While Bips cites many reasons for the break-up, infidelity included, John said in an interview that his silence was mistaken and that he is a one-woman man. However, buzz is that he was already interested in Priya Runchal (who he has recently married). Other sources allege that John broke up with Bips because of her rumoured affair with Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett, her co-star in Singularity. Whatever the reason behind their break-up, it was sad to see a decade long relationship come to an end.

The Aftermath: Bipasha immersed herself in exercise, yoga and her workout DVDs. A source alleges that the actress was seen sweating it out at the gym for five long hours late in the evening. However, it seems Bips has found love with Harman Baweja now and there are even rumours that they may soon get hitched. John, of course, seems to be blissfully in love and married to Priya Runchal.

The Star: Abhishek Bachchan

The Break-up: Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor dated for several years and even publicly announced their engagement. This was one of Tinseltown's most shocking break-ups. While the reason behind their broken engagement is not clear, several rumours have done their rounds. One of the most bizarre ones that we have heard is that Babita allegedly didn't want the father of the bride Randhir Kapoor or Mrs Krishna Raj Kapoor, to attend the wedding. Shweta is also married into the Kapoor family and the Bachchans were allegedly shocked at these demands. Rumour has it Abhishek tried to mollify the parents but to no avail and the engagement came crashing down.

The Aftermath: A deeply hurt Abhishek is said to have completely withdrawn from all kinds of social gatherings and Karisma quickly moved on and got married within the year to Delhi-based businessman Sanjay Kapur. They have now separated and have two children together. Abhishek took time to heal his wounds and found love with Aishwarya five years later.

The Star: Preity Zinta

The Break-up: Preity and Ness were dating for quite a few years and suddenly, the seemingly solid couple, called it quits. The reason for their break-up isn't clear but people have alleged that Ness' mother, Maureen Wadia, wasn't a big fan of the actress and rumours of infidelity (on Ness' part) also did its rounds.

The Aftermath: Preity took charge of her IPL team, produced a movie (Ishkq in Paris) and even hosted a short-lived TV chat show. Her career doesn't seem to be in the best shape at the moment but she is living life on her own terms. Preity spends a lot of time in LA and is seen being her bubbly self at many society dos. About a year after her break-up, a journalist asked if she had moved on from that relationship and she said, "Of course! What do you think? I'm a loser? He is the one who lost. When you date someone for that long how can you not be friends? But we are not best friends. We don't talk every day because that's weird! In my career as an actress, I have never got involved with anybody from the films. As a policy I have always kept my professional and personal life separate. The only time I got this mixed up was with Ness. I don't think I would ever do that in future and make my life a mess. It becomes too complicated..." Well said PZ!

The Star: Shahid Kapoor

The Break-up: After dating for four years Bebo and Shahid suddenly called it quits. Bebo seemed to be quite committed to Shahid and even admittedly did the chasing. Rumour has it were that when Bebo and Shahid first met; he was actually going through a break-up with a non-industry girl he had been seeing. This was not well-known at the time. Kareena became his shoulder on which to cry on and that's how they got close. Shahid was quite a recluse at that time and Bebo did everything she could to change in the relationship. She turned vegetarian and allegedly maintained a distance from friends like Fardeen Khan and Tusshar Kapoor. However, once she met Saif Ali Khan on the sets of Tashan, it seemed Bebo had a change of heart and their budding attraction on the sets is what allegedly led to the break-up.

The Aftermath: Ironically, it so happened that immediately after Bebo and Shahid broke up their film together Jab We Met became a huge commercial success. After that, Sasha's movies flopped one after the other except for Kaminey. Shahid had a series of link-ups with the likes of Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra, but never admitted to being in a serious relationship with anyone. He remains single while Bebo has happily married her Saifoo. When asked if they are friends, Shahid has said that they are cordial to one another when they see each other but that's the extent of their interaction now.

The Star: Raveena Tandon

The Break-up: The hot and sultry Raveena Tandon and her relationship with Khiladi Kumar was common knowledge. Raveena even stopped signing films since Akshay wanted her to be a housewife. But that's when the news of their separation hit the media. The break-up produced more heartache for Raveena than it did for Akshay. The break-up is rumoured to have happened because of Akshay's supposed infidelity and affair with Rekha.

The Aftermath: Akshay soon started dating Shilpa Shetty. Post her break-up Raveena gave sensational interviews against Akshay. She went on quote to say, "Unfortunately, I have always been stabbed by people whom I have trusted the most." Raveena further added that while Akshay was engaged to her, "he got engaged to two other girls as well." She always posed as the assertive, mentally tough and strong woman in front of the world... but behind that exterior, was a woman who dealt with painful setbacks.

Jiah Khan's Shocking End

The Jiah Khan incident went to extremes. The depressed actor allegedly committed suicide on June 3, 2013. She was said to be dating Aditya Pancholi's son, Sooraj. People blamed him for her tragic end and Sooraj was even arrested. However, Sooraj was soon off the hook and out of jail; and he voiced his opinion that Jiah was over-possessive, suspicious and also had problems at home with her mother.
