Chapter 18 - "I missed You"
It was a show of Manish Malhotra; Asad found himself surrounded by famous people. He was not really a "people" kind of person but even he could recognize some popular faces from time to time.
The people around were busy whispering some comments about the looks and dresses and Asad could not help wondering how Zoya had survived in this world. All they cared about was who had worn the same coiffure the last time they had met. Or who was looking better than them.
Like last time, Asad had skipped the red carpet not wanting to draw attention to his presence in the show. Happy that he had got a seat in the front row, he was waiting impatiently for the show to begin.
The plan was to meet Zoya after the show had ended and to take her to some romantic location. Asad already had his driver waiting for them in the car park and as soon as the show was over, he was going to meet her in her personal make-up room. Zoya was not going to visit any charity institute tonight. Nikhat had already sorted everything out and Asad was going to read the cue when Nikhat would wave at him.
Nikhat had not been too willing at first, hating Asad for what he had done to her best friend. And Asad had used every argument he could to convince her. When Nikhat had still not been too keen on listening to his pleas he had finally blurted out the truth.
AAK - "I love Zoya, okay?" That had got Nikhat's undivided attention.
Nikhat - "You do? Prove it."
"How?" Asad immediately asked and Nikhat considered him seriously for the first time.
"I don't know. I'm sure you'll find something," Nikhat had said oh-so casually. She was testing Asad and he knew but Asad already had so much difficulty in front of him that he really wished he could skip that step.
Asad was frustrated. Why was Nikhat so damn hard on him? How was he supposed to prove his love for Zoya? Giving up his life or ardent proclamations were not his cup of tea. Money? Nope bad option!
Then it struck Asad. It had never been about money, right?
"Okay, I'm willing to give Zoya back the Sheikh Properties and her 20% shares."
"You got back your Properties?" Nikhat was beyond shocked. Zoya must have omitted to mention the deal to Nikhat. "Allah, How did Zoya manage that?"
Asad felt satisfied; he was getting somewhere. And he narrated to her about how Zoya had sacrificed Siddiqui Mansion in exchange of Sheikh Properties to gift it to Asad along with Zoya's shares in the company.
"Wow!" Nikhat was as shocked as Asad had been. "You must really mean something to Zoya."
"You think?" Asad asked eagerly. If the two closest persons that Zoya frequented were sharing the same opinion, it had to mean something, rite?
And when Nikhat had finally sighed, he had known she was going to be in agreement with him now. Grinning, Asad had put a hand on Nikhat's shoulder to tell her about his plan.
Asad's attention resumed to the show when the models started to enter the stage and Zoya was nowhere in sight. He was getting impatient as Asad had not seen Zoya since that incident at the charity institution. He had missed Zoya. Asad had never believed it was possible for him to love someone so much; for someone who had not believed in love Asad was doing a fine job. But how to stop his heart from loving someone like Zoya?
When finally Zoya came into Asad's line of vision, Asad's breath caught in his throat. Zoya was looking like she had always looked and he could still feel his heart beat faster at her sight. She was so beautiful. Like always. She was wearing a White bridal Lehenga with thread work. Her makeup was light highlighting her features and the gold jewellery was enhancing her. The show was for promoting Designer Bridal Wear
Nikhat had told him that Zoya walked the ramp only to increase the charity funds that she distributed among several orphanages. And Asad had not been surprised this time; that attitude was typically Zoya. She had found a better way than him to manage her past. Whilst he had taken the path of revenge- a path filled with hatred and hurt that had almost destroyed himself in the process, Zoya had chosen to help the disfavored instead. It made Zoya so much a better person than Asad could ever aspire to be.
Asad shivered at the thought of loosing of Zoya forever. It was because of Zoya's unconditional unselfishness that Asad had been finally able to understand that he should let go of the past. Asad had managed to cure himself from the everlasting hatred and depression which had been transforming him into a cynical cruel man.
Zoya had not seen him yet and Asad was eager to gauge her reaction when she laid her eyes on him. Asad had to convince Nikhat over and over not to warn Zoya that he would be present. Asad was afraid that if Zoya knew that fact, she would not walked the ramp.
Finally, on Zoya's second appearance, she saw Asad and her eyes widen in shock for a few seconds before quickly hiding the emotion and Zoya looked away. Asad felt a sense of dj vu. The last time Zoya had had the same reaction but had looked right back at him in defiance and Asad had loved the challenge Zoya had offered.
Asad found himself waiting for Zoya to look back but was extremely disappointed when she kept her eyes averted and ignored him completely. Asad had definitely not been expecting that. He knew it was going to be difficult to win Zoya back but indifference was so much worse than hate.
The last time, they had so much hate for each other that made the sparks fly to finally explode into the sexual chemistry that had always lurked between them. Asad's machismo ego suffered a huge dent that Zoya would dare to ignore him in such a royal way. Ya Allah! Yeh Ladki mujhe pagal kar degi!
On Zoya's next two appearances, she ignored Asad completely and Asad felt so piqued that he was almost restless. Asad wanted to draw Zoya's attention to him at any cost.
Even as the idea formed in Asad's head, he knew it was a bad one but... the longing was beyond all that! Once the idea had entered Asad's mind, it was glued there and wouldn't go. On Zoya's final appearance, she was wearing long black lehenga with Gold Embroidery. Her hair was up in a chignon and with the cherry red lipstick, it gave her a ethinic but classy look.
And still Zoya was ignoring Asad. Uff!!!
Asad was really really not happy with the fact that Zoya was able to ignore him when she had never been able to do so before. Asad had not taken his eyes off Zoya every time she had walked on the stage and he knew Zoya must be aware of that fact. But she was still averting her eyes not bothering to look in Asad's direction.
Without warning, Asad bounced off his seat and in one agile movement mounted the ramp with a huge jump. He heard the audible gasp in the audience and was beyond caring. Everyone must have been looking in his direction since he saw Zoya's eyes followed the others and looked in his direction. But not in his eyes.
Slowly, Asad made his way towards Zoya like a predator working on its prey and there was an uproar when he reached her. Everybody was assuming that it was part of the show and Asad could see Nikhat sending him frantic signals out of the corner of his eyes.
Taking his own sweet time, Asad waited for Zoya to look at him and felt like years had passed when finally a few seconds later her brown orbs met his. Asad knew his eyes were a dark now because he was looking at Zoya with such intensity, portraying his every emotion he felt for Zoya in that one feral look.
Asad saw Zoya defy him with her eyes still holding his but not betraying any emotion. The audience was so silent now that one could even hear a pin drop. Everyone was watching Asad-Zoya in anticipation. Time seemed to stop as Asad-Zoya stared into each other's eyes their surrounding fading in the background as at that moment only the two of them existed. They stood there eyes locked in one deep and intense look.
And then Asad found what he had been waiting for. Zoya's eyes changed and Asad could read passion in them. Passion for him. Desire for him.
Elated beyond words, Asad bent and picked Zoya up in his arms and made a heroic exit.
