S9x14: Captives

At the Men of Letters' bunker, something moves through the darkness. It finds its way to Dean's room where he's listening to music. Sam hears him yell and runs to investigate, and finds Dean's bed empty. He goes to the armory and gets a sword, and then makes his way to the main room. As Sam searches the room, a white spectral figure moves toward him... and explodes as Dean shoots it.

The brothers try to work out why how the bunker can be haunted and Dean insists that it can't be Kevin. As they talk, the coffeemaker starts to beep and a cup explodes.
An angel, Eliah, attends a funeral. As it concludes, he walks away and Castiel grabs him. Eliah insists that he was there to attend the funeral of Rebecca, the angel who was possessing the human. Castiel points out that Rebecca was friends with Metatron, and Eliah insists that their friendship ended a long time ago. Eliah explains that Rebecca gave up the politics of Heaven and former her own faction, the Penitents. They live humbly among the humans, but Bartholomew killed Rebecca and all of the others.

Sam and Dean scan for EMF activity and pick up nothing, and figure that Kevin is still trying to penetrate the veil. Dean watches the coffeemaker in the kitchen and calls to Kevin. He gets no response and then tries to apologize for Kevin dying on his watch. As Dean says that it was his fault, the lights flicker and Sam comes back in. Kevin appears and complains about Dean indulging in self-pity. He realizes that the Winchesters can see him and explains that Heaven is closed and everyone who has died since the Fall is stuck in the Veil. Kevin asks them to find his mother Linda and explains that he's made contact with another new arrival, Candy, who saw Linda alive a week ago in Wichita. As Kevin fades away, he tells Dean that's how he can make it right to him.

As Castiel leaves the cemetery, two angels capture him and demand to know where Eliah is. Castiel says that he's left and they tell Castiel that Bartholomew has been looking for him.

Sam and Dean arrive at a trestle in Wichita where Candy died. Dean unpacks a radio and the coffeemaker, figuring that it will help them contact Candy.

Castiel waits in Bartholomew's office until the angel arrives. Bartholomew takes Castiel's blade and then hugs Castiel in greeting.

As night falls, Candy's sprit doesn't appear. Dean leaves a message on Crowley's voicemail hoping that he can put him in contact with Linda. The radio gives off static and Candy finally speaks through it.

Bartholomew talks about old times when Castiel led the forces of Heaven... including Bartholomew. Castiel reminds him that he tortured the captives he left with him and Bartholomew explains that he was ordered to kill them and that he followed orders. Now he's proud to tell Castiel that he gives orders.

The Winchesters tune in the radio and Candy says that she was locked in a cell next to Linda. She describes a corrugated metal door and figure that she's describing a storage unit. Two men held her and one matches Crowley's description. Crowley said that she was worth more alive than dead. One day Candy attacked the other man and escaped into the nearby woods to the trestle... and the demon caught and killed her. Candy doesn't know what happened to Linda after she escaped, and hopes for her sake that she's dead.

At the storage unit, Linda cowers in fear as her captor enters her cell.

Dean and Sam drive out, checking storage facilities. Sam has discovered that Candy was a kept woman for a Congressman, and they figure Crowley was holding her and Linda as leverage. Dean wonders why the second demon would have killed them and insists that he's just analyzing the case.

Bartholomew explains about how he took over Boyle Enterprises and used Buddy and his colleagues as vessels. Castiel wonders if Bartholomew wants him dead, and Bartholomew assures him that they're friends. He points out that there's nothing out there for Castiel and he won't find Metatron on his own. Bartholomew wants the same and killed the Penitents rather than let them grow into a bigger threat down the road. He insists that he'll find Metatron first and suggests that Castiel ally with him to take him together.

Sam and Dean check out another storage unit and demand to see the records. The clerk, Del, tells his co-worker Barry to bring out the rental binder. While Dean goes through it, Sam notices a map of the facility and calls Dean over. He points out that there are three adjacent units along Corridor Q and the records show it is rented to a D. Webster. Del overhears them and says that the man is renting another unit on the other side of the facility. Dean goes with Del while Sam checks out the three units.

Del takes Dean to the other unit, while Sam opens one of the Corridor Q units and finds Linda inside. She says that they have to get out before "it" comes back and asks if Kevin is with him. her captor closes the door, trapping Sam inside, and Sam notices a camera on the wall

In the storage unit, Del is watching an iPod with footage from the camera. Dean doesn't find anything and realizes that it doesn't belong to Crowley, just as Del knocks him out from behind.

Bartholomew takes Castiel to his command center where he has tracked Metatron's appearances on Earth. Castiel suggests that they lure Metatron and Bartholomew congratulates him on his insight. Two of Bartholomew's agents bring in Eliah and Bartholomew says that he's going to torture the rebel and find out what he knows... and Castiel is going to help him.

Sam unchains Linda, who leads him to the electrical wiring. She starts trying to bypass the lock on the door and asks if they left Kevin somewhere safe, and Sam lies and says that they did. However, Sam finally braces himself and starts to tell her the truth. Linda cuts him off and says that Sam will take her to Kevin.

Dean wakes up and realizes that he's tied up, next to Barry's corpse. The demon-possessed Del bleeds Barry to call Crowley and tells Dean that Crowley offered him a chance to get in on the ground floor of his new operation. He explains that he's been left alone and Crowley has been ignoring him. Dean agrees with him, warning that Crowley will be pissed because he attacked Dean now that he's Crowley's ally. Del believes him and announces that he quits.

Bartholomew tortures Eliah, who insists that the rest of the Penitents are dead. Castiel finally says that he's had enough and Bartholomew agrees, and tells Castiel to finish Eliah off. When Castiel hesitates, Bartholomew explains that his leaders ordered him to kill the captives because they knew Castiel wouldn't. Bartholomew points out that since then, Castiel has killed thousands of angels. He wants proof that Castiel can do what has to be done. Castiel realizes that he was never free to leave and gives Bartholomew the angel blade. Bartholomew takes it and kills Eliah.

Del prepares to cut Dean and thanks him for reminding him of who he is. Sam arrives and Dean knocks Del over, and Sam punches the demon unconscious.

Bartholomew drops the blade and punches Castiel. Castiel refuses to fight, insisting that angels have to stop fighting angels. He grabs the blade and attacks Castiel, who manages to disarm him and holds the blade to his throat. Bartholomew tells him to do it, but Castiel shoves him away. When Bartholomew draws another blade and tries to stab Castiel, he twists the blade around and kills his former soldier. Castiel then tells Bartholomew's angels to let him pass and they step aside.

Sam and Dean chain up Del and Sam tells him that they're saving him for someone worse than Crowley. Linda comes in and takes Sam's demon-killing knife, and stabs Del in the chest. She then gives the blade to Dean and tells them to take her to her son.

Back at the bunker, Sam and Dean call to Kevin. His spirit materializes and the brothers tell him that Linda is alive and is right behind them. She comes in and Kevin greets her.

Later, Dean gives Linda all of Kevin's things. She shows Dean a ring belonging to Kevin's father, who died when he was young, and figures that Kevin's spirit is bound to it. Dean warns that ghosts trapped in the veil can go bad, but Linda insists that it's her job to keep Kevin safe.

Castiel goes to the cemetery and apologizes to Rebecca for causing the chaos. One of Bartholomew's angels approaches Castiel and says that Castiel showed him a choice... and he's choosing Castiel. Castiel says that he's no leader, but the angel says that he will follow him and two other angels arrive who feel the same.

Kevin tells Sam and Dean that he's not going to let his mother out of his sight. He assures Sam that he knows he wasn't the one who killed him, and thanks them for their help. Dean promises to help him get to Heaven. Before Kevin go, he tells them to get over their issues. He's seen everything that's happened and tells them that all of their fighting is stupid. The Winchesters promise and Kevin and Linda leaves. Once they're gone, Dean turns to Sam only to discover that Sam has walked out. The Winchesters go to their separate rooms and Dean puts on his headphones again.

Thanks a lot for the update. I was wondering whether I should watch the epi today. Seems like its best to skip it.
Its funny how they can pull a whole epi and ignore the elephant in the room perfectly. So much for dragging the issue till everybody learns to live without it.
