Gulaab Gang release blocked by Delhi high court

Just days before the release of Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla-starrer 'Gulaab Gang', activist Sampat Pal has moved court to seek a stay on the film's release. [BR][BR]Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, hearing the plea, questioned Pal for the delay in filing the plea. [BR][BR]"Why you approached the court last minute when movie is going to release? Why didn't you come earlier?" asked court, while passing over the case to hear it later in the day and asking Pal's counsel to show judgments related to the case. [BR][BR]The movie, slated for release Friday, is directed by debutant Soumik Sen and produced by Anubhav Sinha. [BR]

The release of Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla's film Gulaab Gang' has been stayed by the Delhi High Court.

The Delhi High Court Wednesday stayed the release of forthcoming Hindi movie "Gulaab Gang", reportedly based on the life of activist Sampat Pal, who formed Gulabi Gang, a group of pink sari clad women vigilantes in Uttar Pradesh.

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva stayed the release of the film, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, saying that if it is allowed to be released it will cause irreparable damage to the reputation of Sampat Pal. The film was set for release March 7.

"Reputation once lost is lost forever and can not come back and even can't be compensated with monetary terms," the court said.

Sampat Pal moved the high court seeking a restraining order on the release of "Gulaab Gang", saying the filmmakers did not take her permission before making the movie, which shows her in bad light.

She alleged that the lead actress playing her character was shown in bad light in the promos of the film, which will thus affect her reputation.

I respect privacy. People have a right against misrepresentation.

That being said, doing something so late is opportunistic. She should have stayed the movie long time back when the movie was announced, being shot or even being promoted. Now on the brink of release, any stay order or risk of non-release means risk of huge losses for the makers. Had she stopped the movie long time ago, they would have just shelved it and paid her nothing. Sampat has timed it perfectly to blackmail the makers for hefty compensation.

Well...here both parties are at fault. In ANY case, film makers should have taken permission, everyone knows that there is only one Gulab gang, and who's associated with this.
